Fun fact: That unused Hammer Suit sliding sprite actually _can_ be seen in-game. To trigger it, you must collect the Hammer Suit whilst already sliding, and the sprite will be used. Though keep in mind that there is only one stage where this can be done.
It's called "crash handling sprites/animations" that do exactly what the name suggests: Prevent (old) console games from crashing if the player somehow triggers an animation that should not be possible normally. I know this as I'm a game-dev myself and have worked on several romhacks for NES and SNES games. Again, if it weren't for these error handling animations, old console systems would crash upon trying to load a sprite/animation that doesn't exist.
This same principle applies in Final Fantasy 7, where if the player hacks Aeris into the party after she's meant to be dead, she still has some new animations and dialogues throughout the rest of the game. Sadly, gamers not well versed with old-school console programming techniques think that there should be no way Aeris should talk and it confirms that she can be revived somehow (which is absolutely false.)
Unused sprites getting updated is likely just the dev team dumping all the sprites and handing the whole thing to the art department saying "Here, update these." but never telling them which sprites were not used so the art team had no idea and just updated everything.
exactly what I was thinking and probably they thought it was safer to redo everything instead of checking through each unused sprite to see if they could be deleted without causing unexpected problems (as a dev myself, I've been there 😂😂)
01:16 That sprite is actually visible in the final game. While it's true that you cannot slide as Hammer Mario, you can see the sprite If you slide into the Hammer Suit-Item while. Mario will change forms mid slide and keep sliding, using this sprite. As far as I know, this is only possible in World 6-10.
To all the people saying: "Well you can trigger the hammer suit slide animation if you happen to be sliding just before collecting the power-up." You're right... but still wrong in calling the animation/sprite 'used'. The hammer suit sliding animation is just a "crash handling animation" that does exactly what the name suggests: Prevents the game from crashing if the player somehow triggers an animation that should not be possible normally. I know this as I'm a game-dev myself and have worked on several romhacks for NES and SNES games. Again, if it weren't for these error handling animations, old console systems would crash upon trying to load a sprite/animation that doesn't exist.
Well yes... But I wouldn't call it a "crash handling animation"... When Mario is sliding, the animation state is set to sliding and the correct tiles are being rendered. The Hammer Bros suit is programmed so that sliding isn't possible, but as you said, if you trigger sliding before catching the power-up, the sliding animation will indeed render. Therefore it is absolutely correct to call it _used_. It has nothing to do with crash handling really, it's more that the tiles are in the appropriate position, as they really should be. In other cases, you can trigger garbage when you do something you're not intended to do, for example killing Bowsers big ball in the Bowser Fight in SMW: ua-cam.com/video/Fl8xeF5AGYk/v-deo.html
That still makes it used and should be considered as such. It does exactly what it was made for and can be loaded in the game. To call it unused would mean you can't trigger it without doing something to the game (not in the game) that makes it load. If anything I'd call this a secret function since it can't happen unless you try to make it happen.
Useless information time: It actually is possible to slide while using the hammer suit if you acquire the power up while sliding. Which is hard to do and requires some preparation!!
@@lucas_gaming2734 actually, no. It’s quite simple to do. My theory of why they updated the unused sprites is that someone told someone to just go in and updated everything to the SNES platform, but didn't specify anything not to update. Considering how many sprites there are in a game, it was probably faster and cheaper to just update everything than to scan through all the sprites to find the ones they weren't using. Probably also hired people that didn't work on the original game, so they may not have known about those sprites either.
The sliding animation for the hammer suit can still be used in game. In the room with the hammer suit in world six ,if you slide down the slope , and grab the powerup as you are sliding. You can still see the animation.
I'm almost certain that they just give the sprite sheets to their artists to update, without cutting out the unused sprites. That's probably why unused sprites get updated.
One reason for keeping everything in is that all the sprite and map tiles would still be in the same relative locations in memory, so they wouldn't have to go through and fix a bunch of animations and levels to make them look right. Also, they were probably wanting to add new levels and/or put deleted ones back in.
