- Super Mario 64 first released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 with loads of cut content left on the cartridge. This includes loads like references to a cut Yoshi event, early penguins seen on a cereal box, and debug information used by the developers. Luigi was planned for this game, so watch this video to find out the truth about if L is real! Mario 64 looked extremely different when it was first shown at Shoshinkai 1995 (also known as Spaceworld), with a different design for Princess Peach's castle, with moons on the walls, possibly suggesting you'd collect moons in an early version, like in Super Mario Odyssey. The fact that the debug HUD uses the normal Mario 64 font is kind of cute to me. It feels like the developers wanted everything, even stuff the average player would probably never see normally, to have that “Mario charm”.
nah they just dont have any other fonts they could use
it's not like the devs are gonna go through the work of putting times new roman or something onto the cartridge just for the debug menu, they'd much rather be able to re use other stuff

3D Mesh are basically piles of code added together.
Every vertex is made of code. The files found in source code had all the mesh code needed to rebuild the mesh that was already made for Luigi.

That makes me wonder if Nintendo originally had plans for each level to be slightly different depending on where you jumped into the painting (rather than simply spawning in different areas, as suggested in the video), but had to scrap it in the early stages because it would have been needlessly complex. An interesting thought...

The split painting feature is used. Just not in every painting. In Wet Dry World, the water level is different depending on what hight you jump into the painting.

2:03 its not actually a rectangle, its the number "1" because that's how much they're worth. It was likely changed to a star imprint to avoid confusion with the blue and red coins, and because its easier to recolor a grey sprite than to have 3 separate sets of graphics for coins.

The reason the key was cut is because the N64 could probably never handle 8 big boos in one level or the game would crash. Plus there would not be a way to get upstairs (unless getting 1 key can get you upstairs.)

7:10 - A variant of this did make it into the game; how high you jump into the painting for Wet-Dry world determines the starting water level. And bonus trivia, on Tick Tock Clock, the time on the clock when you jump through the painting determines the speed of the level's moving parts.

A beta level from the Shoshinkai event + the original sprites for Luigi were found in the source code from the GigaLeak!
L is actually real people. He is actually in the latest leak of Mario 64.
my theory on the ü showing up is that for all versions other then the japanese one the key counter sprite is removed or replaced by something else, and the PAL version had to have a lot more text and font sprites so it could work in the many different languages spoken around Europe, so my guess is that the space in code where the key counter used to be was replaced by the german letter Ü
