  • Dr Stephen Humphries of Harley Therapy discusses adult ADHD, including symptoms, different treatments, and medication successes (www.harleytherapy.co.uk/adult-....
    ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neuro development disorder that more commonly presents in childhood, but can and does persist into adulthood.
    Dr Stephen Humphries FRC Psych is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Harley Therapy (www.harleytherapy.co.uk) Harley Street in London. In this video he talks about what ADHD is and how it can present itself in adults.
    Although less widely diagnosed in adults in the UK than it is in the US or Canada, ADHD is a relatively common condition. Common symptoms can be anxiety, lack of confidence or depression, but standard treatments for these conditions can just make ADHD worse.
    Dr Humprhries discusses what kind of treatments are available for adult ADHD and how medication, in particular, can be spectacularly successful.
    Dr Humphries can usually see a new patient within a week of a referral with the assessment available within 10 days of the appointment. However there is no obligation to follow up with the treatment. So to book an assessment, contact www.harleytherapy.co.uk today.

    This is beautifully articulated. I especially love the way in which he addresses treatment; An effective mental health practitioner--any health practitioner, for that matter--works in partnership with their patient. Having developed an understanding of their patient's condition, they are to present them with their professional opinion, but at the end of the day, it is up to the individual to, having considered these suggestions, decide for themselves. Not sure why so many people are up in arms about medicating for ADHD. For a lot of people, as Dr. Humphries says, it can be very effective. Dunno where people get the notion that everyone who is on ADHD meds has had it pushed upon them. (I blame 90s media.)

      Many people, including professionals, don’t actually seem to believe people have adhd if they have any success in life.
      They see it as more of a willpower problem.
      And medications often need to be monitored which many people with adhd are not good at doing.

    Normal tasks are difficult. Going to a class or leaning something new and retaining it are all but almost impossible. Simple tests or subjects compared to others is difficult. Only now getting counselling, but because I've built up such an illusion of competence it works against me. Had a counsellor tell me I was too old. That was a shocker. Whatever age we need to find out what causes all the trouble we seem to get into, the judgements of others over the years. I'm building a friendship over the phone with a lady I call my sister in Christ. Yet I'm so scared I'll blow this friendship I'll end up losing even this. Procrastination, fear of blowing it. Brief and lovely connections with daily people is about my limit it seems.

    I have untreated ADHD and am very successful - if you choose the right career (we're really good creatives) and have a fast paced job (I work as a software developer which changes project most days) you can run rings around normal people - we're soooo adaptable! I find the best thing about ADHD is the Hyper focus though, the ability to focus intently on something that takes our interest greatly.. People tend to look at the negatives without contemplating the positives. The thing to know is there ARE positives, and you can use this to your advantage with a little will power and determination.

    I am 35 and realised the reason my behaviour has been a bit "strange" over the years because is because of ADHD. I went to my GP last week, explained my symptoms and he agreed it sounded like ADHD. He said all he could do was put in a request for a specialist to come down and give proper diagnosis but, the NHS has no money so he said the request would be rejected and my best/only option would be to go private. This guy comes across very knowledgeable and thinking of seeing him.

I shall need to explore if Zoom calls with Canada are a possibility with Dr. Humphries. In the meantime, I have these UA-cam videos of his in a Playlist and listen to them on occasion to reinforce this well articulated information.
    Also, I'm on the side of finding the cadence and quality of his voice extremely calming and reassuring.
    If he wasn't too busy to do an ASMR channel on UA-cam, I'm sure he'd develop a fiercely devoted group of followers in fairly short order.

I looked for him to mention what drugs seem to work best, but never remember him uttering this. Would be interesting to know which drug options he is speaking of at 2:10 that are so spectacular. That would have been helpful. Now I have to go watch another video several times and hope I'm lucky enough to catch the answer before I get distracted.

    I have a very important question.
    If someone from the U.S. with an ADHD diagnosis, was on a medication that had worked extremely effectively for that individual, And then that individual immigrated on work visa to the UK, and now subject to the UK's different diagnostic system, will this individual ultimately be able to expedite the UK treatment program by having the knowledge already that there was a working solution already tried back in the states?

    • @harleytherapycouk
      @harleytherapycouk  8 років тому +3

      +ESponge2000 Dr Humphries has seen your question and says that it is possible to continue on the same or similar ADHD medication as prescribed in the US, but not always practical. In the NHS the answer is generally no, since they adhere to certain protocols in the NICE guidelines, whereas in the private sector there is more flexibility. However, medication such as Adderall is very expensive in the UK, although the price does seem to be coming down. So in short, it is possible, but would be worth reviewing all your options to see what is an effective solution.

    But that's only possible at 1 clinic here in Nordjylland... the clinics in Aalborg (which is our "capitol" of Nordjylland) don't even prioritise ADHD, and I got answers that I'd have to wait for more that 2 years for just the accessment...

      @miaschu7614 Рік тому +1

      You're right. I was signposted to information about ADHD, online, when I looked up ways to deal with procrastination, which I have been struggling to manage.
      A counselor told me that she believed I had ADHD, at which I laughed - I would never be described as hyperactive! But since reading and hearing more about it, I now think that she was correct.
      However, I wouldn't think that if I only had a handful of the issues or traits associated with the condition. I think that's where some people could go wrong, or not - everyone might be as mindful as me that many conditions cross over, and not every personality trait is due to a condition.
      I think that I could have ADHD because I have every single symptom that I have read of, except hyperactivity and restlessness. (There was one more, but I can't remember what it was.) However, I have recently read that it doesn't have to be physical; it could be that your mind is constantly on the go and you feel restless without actually moving around. If this is true, then I do have (almost) all of the symptoms.
      I know that some of the symptoms are present in some mental health conditions, such as C-PTSD and bipolar disorder. So, I think that it's not absolutely possible to diagnose yourself, as most of us don't have knowledge of all the other conditions. Nevertheless, I recognise myself in so many of these videos. It does feel good to be understood.

      I believe the short answer to this is that ADHD symptoms present across various areas of functioning. So, if these classmates of yours really did have ADHD, it wouldn't just effect their academic life. In fact, one of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD in children, if I recall correctly, is that the impairment must be evident in more than one setting. The other important thing to remember is that executive function--the thing that allows us to regulate our behaviour and emotions, plan, organize, etc--is still developing in the brain well into a person's mid-to-late twenties. So, although it makes me uncomfortable sometimes to have to express such ageist sentiments, the behaviours you described in your former classmates seem quite typical of young people in post-secondary. After that, it comes down to, like I said, what OTHER symptoms they are exhibiting, and of course, their frequency, duration, and severity.Hope that helps! :)

Some Symptoms are: working memory: emotionally control: impulsive decisions: concentration: social issues: anger which can cause violence; Sexual assaults like groping is common dew to lack of control especially under the influence of alcohol; Suffers get bullied struggle to make friends; it can stun your mental maturity, sometimes for up to ten years; There's I high chance you will get in trouble with the law and when they say naughty kids, they don't mean the kid who shows off to the girls in lessons, or smokes behind the bike sheds; They mean that weirdo who everyone thinks is going to shoot up the netball team. If there were guns in the uk that is. It will most likely have a much more serious affect on adults than children. It's a very serious disease.

    I've got a question, is it normal for adults that have AHAD. to have moments where they're more stressed out or angry then a person that doesn't have AHAD. and how do you deal with someone who has AHAD. I've got a boyfriend that has ahad and he has moments where he gets so angry that he starts yelling at everyone around him. Is that normal for someone that has AHAD.

    • @g.d.1722

      Yes. Short temper and a habit of interrupting others are quite typical of ADHD, although with some feedback and awareness these impulses can be controlled quite effectively. Remember, impulsivity is a main feature of ADD.

      I have most ADHD symptoms (not yet diagnosed) but I rarely get angry. In fact, it's a problem because anger can be a healthy reaction. Although I do get frustrated.
      I am a good mother and an effective teacher, despite being disorganised and forgetful, with a strong tendency to procrastinate.
      You seem like a very judgmental person, so perhaps your wife's behaviour is in reaction to you and your behaviour.
      People are all different, so someone with ADHD, or any other condition, could be unpleasant whereas someone else with the same condition could be absolutely lovely.
      Judging a group of people by one person's behaviour is prejudice and leads to discrimination. So, you should work on improving yourself before speaking against people who you don't know and certainly don't understand.

    Can adhd be considered as being 'on the spectrum'? Nobody's brain is the same, yet we categorise as normal and abnormal. I am afraid this disorder will increase as time goes by, as our lifestyle and pollution has ruined our genes.
