It would be easier if you match your external audio track to the bad audio from the camera. There you match up the 2 wave forms then you delete the camera audio track when you have synced the audio up. That's how I do it. Seems a little bit hard to match the audio up with the video without that bad reference audio track from your camera. Great video.

Of course. And then you could just use autosync, or put them in the sync bin. But the goal of this video (like the title says) was to show how to perform a manual sync. So he's simulating a situation where you don't have camera audio.

Thanks for the video. I had to do this manually because my Canon T7i isn't syncing the audio and video correctly. It is about five frames off. The audio is late. 😞

LOL nice one Joe. I've had DaVinci on my computer for a while now with the full intention of learning video processing so this will really help me given I'm a video novice 😋

Thanks Dunny.. I plan to make a number of Resolve videos over the summer. Will be covering color toning, audio processing and even some basic fusion titles and stuff.

4:17 why you delete 1st auduio and try to sync with "clap" on video if you can do it by seeing thin white claps in both audio tracks and match them in few seconds?????? OMG

Because one its not needed and two when you move the audio from the lower track up you could end up moving it forward or backward knocking it out of sync again. So best to just remove the audio track that is not being used and just sync it up to the video file. Once that is done and you watched a few seconds of video to make sure its just right. You can then link the audio and video footage together ensuring that dont get moved out of sync.

Hold down shift while moving the audio track up or down and this will prevent it from moving forward or backward. Little helpful hint to help save time. :)

I highly suggest not getting rid of the video's original waveform. Just match the spike in the waveform.

Maybe someone in the chat can give me a hand :D I'm creating proxies, I had to manually sync all the individual clips in the edit window like Joe showed. Each clip has 5 audio tracks. Since I'm creating proxies on my export I click keep source name, Render individual clips, audio is Linear PCM but When I render it out there is no Audio. any advice would be great

my audio doesn't have wavelengths on them and I've tried to mess around in the settings to change that and make this process easier but it's way hard when there's no visual matching

For all wondering how to sync clips if the audio and video both are in the same file, simply drag and drop in edit tab, select both tracks (audio and video), then right click and uncheck the option - "link files" now you can drag the audio wherever you want.

when syncing manually (no audio from the camera at all), I have noticed that the spike isn't as sharp as it should be sometimes, there's always a slight upward "hill" before the spike reaches it's maximum height, so my question is this: should I line up the top of the spike exactly with the frame where the clapper slams shut, or should I technically place the top of the spike slightly forward in relation to the frame where the clapper shuts (that is, line up that frame with the moment when the spike *starts* to form, as opposed to the top of the spike? I have always wondered this because technically before the clapper shuts there should be no audio before at all, technically the clapper shutting indicates when the spike would start to form, since before that there was no source of audio at all no? Right now it's always kind of gambling whether I should place the top of the spike right on the frame when the clapper shuts or slightly after, and I always feel a bit clueless as to whether or not I'm placing the track in the right place. I realize this slight difference (less than half a frame really) might be so insignificant that we can't notice the difference, but I always wanted to know just in case so I feel more confident when syncing the audio.
If anyone knows please do let me know, this has been on my mind for a while now

I just happened on this video about syncing Audio to video. in Resolve. And I need some advice being new to Davinci 16.2
I 99% shoot TOY R/C Model Airplanes and My problem is I have a ZOOM H4n PRO that I want the get it to go from Pause to record and back to pause in sync with the Pause Record button on my Canon XA-30 Video Camera. Everyone says it can't be done . Even ZOOM, So next best thing, I want to shoot a bunch of Clips from a few seconds to as much as 30 seconds, maybe thirty in all over a 5 to 10 minute period. Again not being able to reliably get the H4n PRO to go from Pause to Record and Back to Pause I want to record the sounds of these TOY R/C Model Planes as they pass down the Runway and catch the Doppler Effect for the full 5 to 10 minute flight. Then lay the Audio file on a second audio timeline and try and Sync the Video Clips to the Continuous Audio from the H4n. After I get them synced I'd just eliminate the audio spaces where there is no video. Now is it Possible to sync Video multiple clips to a continuous audio track that is not exactly as the Videos Audio track but close. I don't dare do anything that would disturb a guy flying his $20,000 Turbin Jet like constantly snapping a clap board. I'm just getting started with Davinci 16.2 after 24 years using Premiere of one version or another. Because of the COVID thing I haven't been able to shoot some video and record the audio with the H4n PRO to experiment. So just asking if you think this is possible to pursue. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Are you refering to a new video/audio clip? Like taking a new take.. Then yes. If you talk for 2 mins and realize you forgot something and have to start over. Stop you video and audio recording, then start completely over again.. I know it seems tiresome. I have to do this way more then I wish I did. In my podcast for example. I will have about 10 to 12 clips, each one of those clips I often have to retake 3 to 5 times.. Each time I do this I start each take off with using the clapper board so I can make sure each audio clip is sync'd.

the idea of having the spike in audio file with video is the whole point right...? you deleted that main file and then you were trying to fumble around with the visual... i think thats not wise. you could easily match both spikes in both audio files and then remove the audio file with video...

    • @JoeJacksonJr

I dont use the main file since its in-camera audio and I use much higher quality external audio equipment. Which most people wanting to sync their Audio and Video will also be doing.

Don't clap. Click 2 sticks together. Clapping gets you close but it's impossible to snag the exact frame the clap was made not to mention the shape of the wavelength 8O Please remember to add a visual cue to link the audio to the video. Even just saying AND showing a unique number is fine.
Now to my question: Do you know of any way to sync if there is no scratch audio and no slating? Reading lips is ok if the audio and video files are linked in some way, even just on a shot log with the actual file names. I have a project that some newbies handed off to me to edit. Shot on BMPCC4K and looks good. Audio is decent. But no camera audio, zero slating and 15+ minute takes :( 718GB of files and they want me to lay it out and play memory. Filmmakers: NEVER DO THAT! Not knowing about the technical part of your craft is not an excuse. Slating is filmmaking 101. Heck, filmmaking orientation day. Ironically, this is the 2nd project in a row but at least the last one had ok scratch audio, just didn't have time to manually sync with no slating.

@@JoeJacksonJr Leave my IQ level aside. Let me tell you where is the trick. You snap that board and then you match the sound for rest of the clip. If the sound has been recorded after video recording. You will have two files one is video and other is different length audio with different sound intervals. I expected you are going show how to solve the problem of two "no match found error producing" files. You just show cased your drag and drop skills perfectly blended with pressing of delete key. There are 29 dislikes on your video. I did not hit dislike so far because I think content creator must be encouraged. People looked up to you that you will solve problem for them. You are telling people are themselves problem with having no skills or IQ to appreciate your work.
