  • In today's tutorial we're going over how to fix multicam sync issues in DaVinci Resolve. Everything from audio issues, to multiple live performances synced together and more. This can all be done in the free version of Davinci Resolve.
    Download Davinci Resolve for Free: www.blackmagicdesign.com/prod...
    Notes:
    Multicam editing is amazing. For music videos/live performances it can be incredible, even talking head interviews it can make your life super easy. I'm currently working a contract where I've edited at least 50 multicam performances in the past 2 weeks and I've run into some issues that I feel are fairly common so I figured it would help to show the workaround I've developed.
    Huge shout out to DiverseCity for letting me use their footage for educational purposes. They didn't have to do that, so I really appreciate it.
    Check out their website (not mobile friendly): diversecityfest.com/?fbclid=I...

    I'm still in the thick of editing part 2 and when this video posts I'll be 1 day out from deadline so wish me luck.
    Also it's crazy we just hit 1k subs. I had this whole things planned as aspecial givaway but I honestly thought I wouldn't hit it til like September so I've got nothing ready to go, my bad yall. You guys are the best. I'll get something together in the next few months for sure.

  • @JimRobinson-colors

    Nice job. I find that h.264 clips from some older cams like GH4 - the software has a hard time detecting them as the same cam and doesn't place them one after the other. So I find that throwing them on a timeline and rendering out a prores full track and then multicam seems to work better. I also find now that the CUT page works better for sync for some reason - A few minor bugs in that too. But as a multicam alternative I find it interesting - with the scenario you have with that drummer doing that fill - with the cut page you can watch that angle and mark in and out - drop it on top on the main timeline in sync then continue through that angle dropping other parts. Did this with a concert video - with each cam angle and by the time I was finished - had a clean two video track edit that played back super smooth to hone in the edits. New way of multicam editing.

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  4 роки тому +1

      That's interesting I haven't actually come across that issue yet. Thanks for the heads up. With regards to the cut page method do you find it's a more efficient workflow? I honestly don't use the cut page super often, I've gone through BM's training course on the cut page but I'm finding it hard to kinda break the habit of doing everything in the edit page. I probably should alternate between the two more often.

    The audio guy in me wants to say, do you really need that pop screen? But for real, this was super good info. Everything I was hoping to learn and then some. I despise videos that make everything look so easy and then I go do the same thing and it doesn't work....so frustrating. But I know I'm not the only one, that's probably all of us these days, lol. I love that your showing some retime stuff along with this too. I'm trying to get into editing music performance videos and this is gonna be a really useful tool that I know I'll need eventually. Many thank you's!!!

      @@aholder4471 thanks for that. I'm right there with you about some videos making it look too easy, I know I've been guilty of that sometimes for sure. This has been my go to editing method for musical performances and it's a pretty efficent way of working. Especially being able to grade everything within the multicam clip itself. I will note though that I've heard people say good things about using the sync bin on the cut page, but this works so well I'm reluctant to switch over. Maybe one day I'll check it out.

    I like the workaround. Here is another needed workaround that is needed from a live shoot. I had one main camera and a second camera that was started and stopped during recording. So in essence I have a long main clip and some shorter 2-5min clips. I tried to sync them up using sound and markers(didn't work) but it did allow me to move it in the multicam tab later and line up the markers. Unfortunately, you can see that by the end of the clip it is no longer in sync with the other clip(you can watch and play both audios to check). Question how do you get the two clips in sync? I tried nudging the clip with the arrow keys(it's probably only a frame or two off at the beginning which increases over time I figure) but that only moves the playback needle as if you are pressing play a frame at a time. Have a way to do this?

    Nate, I just subscribed and this video is going right into my DaVinci Resolve personal playlist!!! I make drum videos using 5-6 cams that I always have to line up manually based on the audio waveform. It works very well, but I'd like to try Multicam editing. You see, I'm shooting using action cams which automatically make 10 min. clips. I record several takes of the same song, then afterward I choose the best performance. So sometimes, the chosen take is right in the middle of a 10 min. clip from camera 1, at the beginning of the clip of another camera, at the end, or even crosses over 2 clips...a real headache! On several occasions, I tried Multicam but it never works because like I wrote earlier, the audio of the chosen clip is not always close (beginning, end, middle, over 2 clips). Would you then suggest that instead of only keeping the clips that contain the selected take, I choose all clips of all the takes, sync them up, then crop to the selected take? Would that work? Would I need to first make a compound clip with all the clips from the same angle, and for each angle, before attempting to sync? Otherwise, any suggestion for my particular situation? I also need to learn how to navigate between timeline and multicam. Your video will probably be of great help for that. Thanks!

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  2 роки тому +1

      hmmmm so are you able to try and sync em all at the same time? or because it sounds so similar between clips does that mess up waveform sync? What you could do is take all 10 min clips from one camera, put it on a timeline then turn that into a compound clip (make sure the clips are in chronological order). Do that will all of the cameras so then you can sync up the 6 tracks in a multicam track (hopefully automatically, but possibly manually). So then getting your in and out points for the best take can be straightforward, and then for the edit you have the ease of multicam editing, watching all angles simultaneously.
      Edit: I just checked out your channel, great covers man. Some of my favorites in there. Keep it up!

    • @Drums4Freaks
      @Drums4Freaks 2 роки тому

      @@NathanCarterVids Hi Nathan, thanks for replying. I don't think I ever tried to Compound Clip all clips from the same angle - and for each angle - then try the Sync by audio on a multicam timeline. I'll try that. About in-out points, I never use that. I just reduce on each side and only keep the targeted take so I have a shorter timeline. What is the advantage of usin in-out points instead?
      Oh and thanks for watching my channel, glad you liked some of my covers. Subscribe for more!

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  2 роки тому +1

      @@Drums4Freaks hope it works. By in and out point I more or less just meant isolating the take that you like best. However I use in and out points quite a bit when looking at longer clips in the media pool and I want one particular moment. So I while watching it in the media pool I'll press "I" for when it starts and "o" for when it ends. Then when I drag into the timeline only that part of the clip will show up. You can still trim or extend it just like normal. Save you from dragging the whole clip in and then trimming on the timeline. May not be particularly useful for what you're doing, but I use em all the time.

    • @Drums4Freaks
      @Drums4Freaks 2 роки тому

      @@NathanCarterVids UPDATE: Here's what I tried - if that can help someone else in my situation:
      1. Trim each angle clip to the chosen take.
      2. Render as individual clips.
      3. Create a multicam timeline using the rendered clips - sync by audio.
      That worked well and fast to get there. Except 1 camera seemed to have its audio earlier than the image so its image was late when compared to the other angles (because it synced using audio). Even though I was adjusting it on the timeline, it seems like the adjustment was not taken into account when back on the multicam timeline. If I can't find a fix for that, then next time I'll check the image & audio sync for each clip at Step 1 above and adjust if required, and only then render individually (Step 2). Glad I took the time to experiment this and that it somewhat works. I'm excited to try this new method (multicam) for editing my next drum cover. Thank you Nathan!

      Okay so it all one take or is it multiple shots and no audio? Either way, if you don't have any scratch audio (doesn't sound like a timecode situation if it's a pre recorded track either) you're gonna have to eyeball it. The syncing feature needs some type of audio or time code data to sync to. Maybe one day ai will be good enough to match just video and audio without additional data, but unfortunately I don't know of anything like this that exists yet

      @NathanCarterVids  3 роки тому

      Absolutely. Once you generate the multicam track it's open season from there, add more tracks, cut stuff up, add new stuff, whatever you want.

      @@NathanCarterVids thanks. But I don't think you understood. Camera 1 has a full length clip, but camera 2 has 20 clips. How does DaVinci know that those 20 clips are from a single camera and puts them in a multi cam track?

      @@carlosandreviana9448 oh so you want it to sync the clips automatically? If there's no gaps what if you could do is bring those clips in order onto a timeline and create a compound clip and use that when creating the multicam clip. If there are gaps but there's audio (assuming no timecode) you could try and create a multicam clip and then consolidate those clips onto one track manually. However this may not sync every clip super well, for example some sections sounding the same. You then could do as I suggested earlier and sync it by hand within the multicam clip. Once you're done, use it on your main timeline and then it functions just like a normal multicam clip.

      @@NathanCarterVids they usually sync. I wanted to avoid adding one by one 😊 but I guess I do not have a better choice

    What if you have 2 clips with different frame rates?

      That's a rough one that I just dealt with the other day it was 23.98 and 24fp. You can change the clip attributes to get them matching other wise drift is inevitable

    Have you figured out how to crop/transform/zoom into the video image AFTER syncing it into a multicam clip? I have been searching for days and can't find ANYBODY mentioning it.

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  3 роки тому +1

      Well you could adjust the zoom on the multicam timeline itself, or go into the timeline and adjust the clips individually.

      @@NathanCarterVids I'm on my first edit ever with Multicam and using Resolved 18 for the first time too. I realized that when I was selecting my clips and then right clic on it to create the multicam clip, I was in CUT mode when I need to be either in Media Mode or Edit mode to do this. @GhislainLeduc best of luck to you. In all honesty I've been using resolve professionally every day for the past 5 years and I have almost no idea how the cut page works. I keep telling myself I'll learn it, but the edit page let's me get so detailed I really enjoy it. I do know that there is a sync bun feature on the cut page which I believe is the cut page equivalent of a mutlicam sequence

      Whatever works for you. These are just trouble shooting recommendations. Typically it just works. Especially if it's a traditional mulitcam shoot. Either by waveforms or even better with timecode. It's been a while since I've used premiere, so if it works for you, go for it.
