    I'm only a casual Who fan, but is interesting to me to see the parallels between the waning days of Classic Who and the final season of Star Trek TOS. Both were shows struggling with slashed budgets, changed time-slots, tumultuous relationships with the network, a loss in the best writers, and showrunners making dubious calls.
    Even Doctor in Distress almost reads as an attempt to invoke the kind of fan movement that saved TOS from being canceled after season 2, but coming across as less passionate efforts by the fanbase, and more a tactless call for charity from the public. What's funny is that while Trek's season 3 drop in quality hampered a repeat attempt at rescuing it, Who appeared to actually be improving somewhat and developing a direction before being canceled.
    And of course both would be sustained by outside show media in the wilderness periods, with the fan conventions and zines keeping ST alive and all sorts of printed/audio material allowing a soft rebirth for many of latter maligned/marginalized Doctors.

    • @SamyulDavis
      @SamyulDavis  5 років тому +12

      Fantastic comment. Yes, Doctor Who certainly regained its balance right at the end...but the BBC just had other plans by that point. Though i've never followed Trek, the books i've read on the fan culture are very similar and just as boundary-breaking. Thanks for actually contributing to the conversation, like many here seem to be incapable of.

    • @MerelyAFan
      @MerelyAFan 5 років тому +7

      The culture of both shows proved to be significant and groundbreaking during those periods for different reasons.
      I think Who endured a lot because of the unwritten rule of "canon is what you make of it" The very tone of the show's premise allowed for an idea that that the Virgin New Adventures, Comics, and Big Finish could have all happened, some of it, or none at all.
      Continuity lockouts, arguments about what does or does not count; things that have plagued too many fandoms to name never affected Who to the same degree because of the kind of show it was. As a result I believe it allowed for a greater investment in an EU far more than other franchises because it a very real sense it was as ground level significant to fans as the show itself.
      With Trek it was a triumph of general viewer created content specifically. The conventions, the magazines, the modern emergence of fanfiction,; it was one of the most notable examples of fans picking up a show and not just keeping it alive but expanding its reach far beyond what anyone expected.
      Cons, cosplay, fan films, etc existed in nascent form here and there, but Trek centralized and streamlined to such a degree that a lot of the common pillars of how modern media fandom operates feel rooted, even indirectly from the model ST created in the 70s.

    • @SamyulDavis
      @SamyulDavis  5 років тому +4

      MerelyAFan "Canon is what you make of it" may as well have been the title of my recently submitted dissertation. Could not agree with the sentiment more. It saved Who. It's the very reason the show can reinvent like nothing else. Love it.

    I'm a 51 year old American from Texas. I am SO happy to learn that a younger, English fan has the same opinion of JNT that I do. I knew something had gone wrong when I saw the revamped opening of the 1980 season. I felt like the theme had gone from classic, skipped rock 'n roll, and went straight to Disco (which was almost dead by then anyway.) Then the new Tom Baker scarf and get-up. Ughhhh. I went to a Dr. Who convention in Houston TX in 1986 and got to meet Colin Baker. I asked him (being a cocky 18 year old) who the hell put Turner in charge. He stifled a chuckle, gave me a look that seemed to say "Good Question" and answered, "It's a long story."

Absolutely hilarious, Capaldi and River play off each other *perfectly* and their moments together are on point. Nardole is always a plus, Capaldi's hints as to who he is and his unending confusion as to how she hasn't got it yet, it's such an amazing dynamic. The moment River realizes who he is? There conversation in front of the towers? Fucking amazing. I really can prattle on about this episode forever.

      The rings of Ahkaten WOULD be amazing if the Doctor's speech wasn't invalidated by Clara hijacking the plot to be important.
      ...
      No seriously, the doctor having so much pain and experience that even something like that monster just could not take it all is such an amazing scene, the speech was amazing and it really showed just how deep the doctor's character goes under the fun side he always puts on, it showed how old he was, and how depressing it was to live for so, so long.
      BUT NO LOL THE MONSTER WAS FINE, BUT WHAT'S THIS? CLARA HAS A LEAF? BETTER GIVE THAT MORE ATTENTION CAUSE EVERYONE JUST LOOOOVES CLARA MORE THAN THE DOCTOR!
      Not saying companions shouldn't get important parts but come on, how can you cut something like that short?
      But yea, if you cut out the last part it really was a pretty good episode.

    As someone who remembers 1985, I truly felt Doctor in Distress was horrid. Having said that, it also wasn't an official BBC project, but was instead put together by Ian Levine. It just seems official because he got a number of the current and former stars of the show to appear on the recording (and the video). In contrast, 1993 was so much worse for several reasons. First, after watching the program sink slowly for nearly a decade and then watch it disappear from the screen in 1989, it was finally clear that nobody was going to take up the reigns and produce the show again on television (for the foreseeable future, if ever). Second, it was a major anniversary for the program, but wasn't getting nearly the same attention that the 10th and 20th anniversaries received. And finally, Dimensions in Time proved that even getting some "new" Doctor Who for the anniversary would be an utter disappointment... so much worse than anyone could have imagined. I truly felt embarrassed for having been a fan.
    It took a long time (well over a decade) before I ever bothered watching another episode again. The only bright point is that when I did come back, all of the old episodes seemed fresh again. So that's something.

    It's truly amazing to me how despite all the issues with the JNT era and the show dying, we managed to get Season 26 which is in my opinion one of the best seasons in the show's history. Also it isn't just great, but it also does a phenomenal job looking forward. Curse of Fenric and Survival delve into Ace's backstory and home life that would become standard in the new era. Ghost Light's central theme was about accepting the inevitability of change. Perfect way to leave the show for the new era to pick it up later

    Man, I really gotta disagree with your opinion on series 7. I can understand frustration with endings leaning towards deus ex machina, but it's entirely overidden by the interaction and intrigue and growth of the characters. While many don't like it, Clara's set up as the "impossible girl" is great for her as a character because it plays a role in changing the Doctor's perspective on her. While he initially only she's her as an intersting enigma, throughout their witty and sarcastic and just fun to watch interactions it slowly becomes a much more human appreciation for her, culminating in the Day and Time of the Doctor.

For me the absolute low point was series 3's ending with that stupid CGI goblin Doctor and then turning him into frickin floaty space jesus (and the less said about Rose's constant comebacks and the whole series 4 creepy meta-crisis Doctor sex doll clone the better). And then when the godawful Simm Master (the ONLY time he portrayed it well was when he teamed up with Missy in series 10) returns later on and turns everybody in the world into his clones. I absolutely detest so much of the RTD era and it was the 11th and 12th Doctor eras that restored my fave in one of my fave shows (i love so much about the classic stuff too).

    I started to think I was too old for Doctor Who in 2016 when we had that year-long break and I started to discover new shows like Arrow, Game of Thrones and Black Mirror which were a lot more graphic than what I was used to but then when they did the 2016 Christmas Special I realised how it isn't a kid's show but it isn't an adult show, it's a family show and I think that's the reason it's been running for so long now.
    Tbh now with Jodie's new series I'm started to feel a bit old for the show because it has a very CBBC Sarah Jane Adventures overly friendly vibe to it but I still enjoy it.

    If you think 2013 was the lowest point of the show... I think you are potty. The lowest point is the end of Colin's run and the beginning of Sylvester's the corporation was trying to kill it. In 2013 it went out of its way to celebrate it. And fashionable as it is to knock Moff.. It's just lazy. Late JNT and early RTD are worse than any point in his run.

    In my opinon one of the biggest issues with 80s who in that moment was the script editor Eric Saward. He didnt believe Colin Baker should of been cast as the 6th doctor and was angry with JNT's decision to cast Colin without consulting him, which in my opinon, lead to him letting some scripts such as the twin dillema (a script which needed rewritten) pass by, leading to a 6th doctor who was dislikeable in hia first appearence . Not only that but during Trail of a Timelord he quit his job and wouldnt allow his script to be used for the final part. Overall great video as a lways though and would love to see you talk about the 6th doctor as despite an unfortunate start, he is one of the best incarnations of the character in my opinion.

    Both Series 7B and Series 10 felt dull at many points. It felt like they were rushing 11 and 12 out the door as fast as they could. Some episodes on rewatch make me realize that all tension I had was wasted away because if the Doctor was on a ticking time bomb then they must make him *d a r k e r* and more *g g r r u u m m p p y y.* Half the time it felt like 7b and 10 were both the same series. In my honest opinion Doctor Who turned into the CW's Flash and how in Season 4 of the Flash people were debating if it was good or bad. It gives you that uneasy feeling.

    The lowest points for me, for I equally hate both:
    1. Series 6 - the whole Twilight-like story, my companions' daughter is my wife, and they are my relatives, it even contradicts the fact that there can be no Timelord-human metacrisis
    Only good episodes, but not outstanding: God Complex, Doctor' s Wife, others are just passable, and yeah, I was not even fond of it at the time it was aired
    2. Series 8 - Clara is larger than life, meets the Doctor as a child, lectures him, using him and her angst and arrogance even ruining a good episode like Mummy On The Orient Express, its says everything that the most interesting story element was Who Is Missy? during that season and I love Time Heist
    Danny Pink - Clara relationship
    Acc. to my opinion it would have been a great choice to feature Psi and Saibra (empathic, telepathic capabilities). They would have been great to be an amazing counterpoint to Clara angst and to inject the show with fresh blood and talent
    Often times, humans from future time periods and humanoid aliens featured on the show, and it was great: Leela with Tom Baker, Ace with Sylvester McCoy, Captain Jack Harkness with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, Romana I & II, Nardole, Missy.
    As for Series 7, its a hit-and-miss, not awful, but not outstanding, either.

    When a “Genius” in the form of Steven Moffat who glorify phrases like “Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Whimey”. You need to back off a little and tell yourself. Since when the Doctor have gotten both idiotic and illogical. I cannot see Hartnell-McGann would say anything that lame.
    But the lowest in current Who series starts with Series 6 and boy was River Song a complete useless spinoff of Series 4 as we always get “Spoilers” and teases of what is happening.
    As much smack people talk of RTD. He at least plans what he want to say and tell in a story and ends the arc.
    Moffat started a season with the crack in the wall. Of course the next season is the marriage of River Song and don’t get me started with A Good Man Goes to War which just jumps into Let’s Kill Hitler. Does anybody knows the gap there which doesn’t explain much. Series 7 is split into two airings and years. Of course Series 8 is green lit minus Matt Smith. So 12 episode of a resolution that could have ended the 11th Doctor’s era has been crammed into the most convoluted swan Song episode of Time of the Doctor!!!
    That is when I question if Doctor Who is even good.
    I though I was the only fan that talks down on Moffat but I guess I am not alone.

    Bizarrely as far as modern Doctor Who was concerned, my low point was probably Series 2. I absolutely loved Series 1 and Eccleston's Doctor, but Series 2 has some of the weakest episodes of modern Who in my opinion (the Cyberman two parter was pretty good though, and I liked The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit) and just didn't excite me like the previous series did. Thankfully Series 3 was much better and I had started to warm to Tennant's Doctor by this point.
    Whilst Series 2 is my lowest point of modern Who, I have to agree that Series 7 part 2 was a difficult watch at times!
    As for classic Who, it's a little harder to say as I wasn't alive for most of it and didn't watch it when it was aired! A lot of people say the Colin Baker / Sylvester McCoy eras but I love the 6th and 7th Doctors. I'd even go as far to say that McCoy's era has some of 80's Who's finest moments. That 'Doctor in distress' single is bloody awful though...

    • @crashfan9997
      @crashfan9997 5 років тому

      I actually agree. I'm a massive RTD fan and I love the first 7 series of Doctor Who however series 2 is the second weakest for me. It is only better than series 7 for me because The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit and Army of Ghosts/Doomsday are amongst the very best 2-parters of Doctor Who and they alone saved the series. Series 2 had New Earth, The Girl in the Fireplace, Love and Monsters and Fear Her are all boring or shit episodes imo. Series 7 was more consistent but the only real 10/10 for me was The Angels Take Manhattan. I still love both series, series 2 just gets lucky with those two 2-parters.
