An anecdote from Chuck Daly's 1990 book: Dennis was injured, and he missed Game 3 of the Finals. One of the Brendans (Suhr or Malone) informed Chuck that Dennis was feeling despondent about not being able to contribute to the team. Chuck handed Dennis a thousand dollars or so, told him to go out to the dog racing track and clear his mind. Chuck knew how to manage personalities, as did Phil Jackson.

Daly nearly left Detroit on more than one occasion. He and McCloskey butted heads, and he finally had enough after '92. He felt that the players were beginning to tune him out as well. Dennis was having a helluva season in '92 until about February or March. His marriage was falling apart, and Chuck leaving was imminent. Mentally and emotionally, Dennis was as good as gone after Chuck left.

I love rodmans story, respect and love for chuck daily for embracing dennis and his struggle. Chuck saw dennis potential and embraced him as a son! Chuck helped mold dennis as a player and didn’t judge dennis and encouraged Dennis to be himself
