Thank you for this video. I've tried to overwinter dahlias inside for a few years. Last year was the first time I had success. I dug them and cleaned them without water so some soil was left on them. Then I put them in a paper bag in my basement. I found it much easier to learn how to divide them after the eyes formed in the spring. I'm in zone 6a. I started some from seed for the first time this year with your encouragement. I'm excited to keep tubers for next year. I appreciate your help and insight.
I'm so glad that you tried growing dahlias from seed this year! It's so satisfying, isn't it? 🥰 Also, thank you for sharing the way that you're storing and dividing your dahlia tubers. 🌸
Zone7b here. Have never done this and am considering it. Normally I just mulch and hope for the best. Last year only three out of seven came back. The year before was worse. Thank you for sharing.
Hi there. Since Dahlias are marginally hardy in your area, I definitely suggest overwintering at least some of the tubers. It's so worth it. Then come Spring, you can divide the ones that have obvious eyes on them and get more plants that way. I'll be sure to show that process when I'm doing it during the later winter months. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌸
Thank you! 🥰 Dahlias are so fun to have in the garden. Also, I'd only let the tubers dry for 1-2 days. After that, they should be good to go for storage. 🌸
Wonderful! What temperature range does it stay under your house during the winter months? If it's somewhere between like 35-50 F, you should be ok. I'd love for you let me know how you make out in the Spring. Don't forget to check on them once a month during the winter and to give a little water if they are drying out. 💗💐
@@budgetgardeningvita My husband says it stays around that range. I don’t go under the house like he does. I already have some Amaryllis bulbs under there, so we’ll see how they do when we take them out in November.
New subscriber! Thanks for all your expertise! I grew dahlias for the first time this last summer and Im already addicted 😅. I purchase the tubers from Walmart. It was a tough summer for them mostly because of a severe grasshopper year but I had a few beutiful blooms. The sad thing is that when I removed them from the pots to store them for winter I noticed many had the Gall that looks like cauliflower growing on the stem part of the tuber. All the videos say to trash the tuber and steralize the pots and discard the soil. Have you ever had gall on any of your tubers?
I live in Southern Ontario (6a). I only have a few dahlias. So far they have escaped the frost. I plan to follow your lead, placing them in a cardboard box in the garage. It's pretty cool out there in the winter but usually doesn't freeze. I like the suggestion to use a paint brush to clean them up. I can check in on them at the same time as I spritz the geraniums. I had better mark a reminder in my planner!
Hi Maureen! I'm so glad to hear that you'll be overwintering your dahlias. In the video, I had said to let the tubers dry for a week or so. I think after 1-2 days, the tubers should be ready for storage (otherwise you risk them drying out). Also, will you be keeping your geraniums in the garage also? I'm keeping my geraniums in the basement because it's just a little warmer down there. My garage gets down to 40 F / 4C (sometimes even colder) during the winter, which is too cold for my geraniums. I was just curious what you were planning to do. 😊🌸
@@budgetgardeningvita Thanks for the tuber tip. I was just going to shake the dirt off of the geraniums and put the plants in a cardboard box in the garage. I've done that for 2 years. The first year most of them did fine. Last year was a bust. Unfortunately I had been ignoring them all winter.Out of sight, out of mind! I didn't check on them or spritz them. Now I know better. Maybe I should try the basement . It would be a little less hostile. I had a friend who kept her geraniums going for over 10 years!!! She threw them away one year because she was bored with them. And she never thought to give them to me! 😆
I’ve grown dahlias for about five years now. Usually I store them in clumps with the soil still on in brown paper bags or cardboard boxes. This year I’m going to attempt to wash and divide individually. I’m going to dust mine in cinnamon and store some in peat moss and others in plastic wrap to see which fair best. My basement has a dehumidifier so I’m hoping an unheated closet upstairs will be better for some and the mini fridge in the basement for others. I’ve lost so many expensive tubers over the past few years that now is time to experiment and see what will work best.
I'm also in zone 5b. I store my dahlia tubors in the garage. My garage is only partly insulated. So, to ensure they don't freeze, I place the tubors in a cooler.
What size flower pot do you use for your dahlias? I clean my tubers off with a paint brush and store them in all laundry baskets with burlap and cedar mulch. I pray all winter that they make it. I also start some from seed so I have a large collect now.
I have stored mine and started them in the house early and when they are growing I take cuttings, they root in a small pot really fast I get tons doing this, I can't believe how fast they root in from cuttings.
@@annelliott6653 Yes! Rooting dahlias from cuttings is fun and easy. It's definitely a great way to increase your inventory. Thank you for sharing, friend! 🌸😊
I dig my 1 dahlia bulb a few weeks ago and I took the dirt off, but they feel soft. Do you think they will survive? Will Miracle -gro sphagnum moss work? Thank you I'll let you know! We live in Northeastern Pa.
Hi Karen. Normally, dahlia bulbs feel firm like potatoes. Do you think the dahlia got too much water and the tuber rotted? The Miracle-gro sphagnum peat moss should work fine. Are any parts of the tuber(s) still firm?
Thank you for getting back to me! The inner ones feel firm maybe the top ones are a little soft. They were in a planter maybe not covered enough but it did good this summer I will check them in a month and let you know!
After 3 tries this will be year 4 attempt. My problem in zone 5 🇨🇦 is an unheated garage and a fully finished basement and woodstove heating. Inside the house they dessicated and the garage even in a cooler they froze or didn't have airflow. Going to try the bottom drawers in our basement fridge. Some I'll do the plastic wrap way and some maybe in peat. It has become an expensive experiment every year. 🤦🏻♀️
Hi there. I think storing your tubers in a fridge is a great idea. Please read comments from this video as others have had success storing tubers in the fridge as well. Fingers crossed that your new method(s) work. I'd love to hear an update from you next Spring. 💗😊
I have tons of dahlia tubers that I can hopefully overwinter successfully this year! Will you be selling your dahlia tubers as divisions for your nursery, or as potted plants?

I used peat moss last year in shoe box’s and put it in the fridge and it worked really well.
That's great to know! Thank you for sharing your method. 🌼😊
Once again, perfect timing on your Dahlia video. This was my 1st year growing Dahlia’s & frost got them last week. Thank you.
