    Thanks for the great information Vita. I planted begonias in my garden this year and now I know I can overwinter them. Thanks for sharing.

    I have a gorgeous yellow begonia that bloomed it's head off. I'm in zone 5b Colorado. I'm going to try to take it out of the container and store it through the winter.

    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am storing tuberous begonias and bareroot geraniums for the first time this year...hoping for the best...my garage gets too cold and my basement is too warm. Taking my chances in the beasment, but better than not trying! I have also saved impatiens seeds. THANK YOU!!!

      You're very welcome! I'm so glad you'll be overwintering some plants this year. The key with the bare root geraniums is to check them once a month and to spritz the roots. I hope you have great luck this winter. Also, be sure to follow along when I start my Impatiens seeds indoors. It'll be fun to grow along this winter. 🥰💐

    Thanks for the reminder! I've hauled some of my hanging baskets that include begonias closer to the house, and they've been dying back. Between this video and your others, I want to check and see if I should be looking for seeds from my tuberous begonias - no idea if that's a thing! Also - I should be dropping hints to my neighbors that I'll happily dig theirs out if they've got some they're just going to let die. ;-)

      You're very welcome! I love saving begonia tubers as well as starting begonias from seed. I also love hitting up friends and family for free-to-me plants that they are willing to give that would die otherwise. ☺️🪷

    Hi I’m new in your channel I didn’t know to make changes, I do stop watering them & place them in my greenhouse for winter now trying to bring amaryllis out off dormancy I live in southern Indiana and in garage during winter can be below zero, my first timed this was last year and it worked ❤

      Hi there. Welcome to my channel! Is your greenhouse heated or does it freeze in there during the winter? That's great that overwintering your tuberous begonias worked last year. Overwintering plants can definitely save us a lot of money!

    I dig mine after the frost, take off stem, dry out on several pieces newspaper on kitchen counter for two weeks. I dust off dirt . Store each tuber by itself in a brown lunch bag. Then place all in a big brown paper grocery bag until April, in the dark basement.

    Hi. Can you just bring it in as a houseplant and wait till it dies back to remove the tuber from the soil? There were a few that did not bloom all summer (I live in Atlanta) and they started blooming now but the temps are getting in the 30's at night.

      Hi there. Sorry for the delay in writing back. I'm curious what you ended up doing with your tuberous begonias. Your idea of bringing them in until they naturally die back and then removing the tuber should work. You can also overwinter the tuber in a pot in a cool area like your garage but just stop watering it so that the tuber can go dormant. Good luck, friend! 😊🌸

    I grew non stop begonias from seed and were great. When I dug them I couldn’t see a tuber just roots. I put them in an above ground root cellar as we have no where else and only one came through. The root cellar was high humidity with one vent and we added another vent, but now it may get too cool. We covered the vent on really cold days but we also had a warm winter. I wasn’t expecting any to survive because it was just roots. This year I dug the one that survived and will put in some vermiculite maybe. It’s small and not sure if it will survive and still see no tuber.
    I just kept bulbs loose and open in a bin-dahlias, glads. Used paper bag for begonias and geraniums. Because the humidity was high many geraniums molded. The begonias may have been too dry-just dried root balls in spring. I should have just left the begonia in the pot and stored it. Maybe I will replant it and do that. The experimental root cellar did get to upper 30s.
    Oh no, the tubers that sprouted may not have enough energy. I’d be tempted to plant inside. Good luck.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree that some of your tubers may have gotten too dry. I'm also wondering about my tuberous begonias that sprouted. They do seem dry so I was thinking of hydrating them at a minimum before storing them again. We'll see what I end up doing. This past spring was busy as I was still teaching in a high school so I fell behind in potting up tubers, corms, etc. Gardening is one big experiment, isn't it? I guess that's one of the reasons why I love it so much! 🥰🌹

    Thank you for your helpful information about overwintering tuberous begonias. Would you be able to advise me on overwintering my yellow mistal begonia? Living in Zone 6 in Southeastern Mass, I overwintered this plant last year in its pot after bringing it in late October before any frosts. When all the foliage had died back and the soil was thoroughly dry, I placed it in a cool, dark closet still in its pot. Then, in mid-March of this year, as the tubers began to sprout. I sparsely watered the plant and brought it outside in mid-May. // Throughout the summer it grew as hanging, trailing plant. BUT, it wasn't until mid-September that it started to bloom. Now in mid-October, it is loaded with flowers and looks very healthy. // I don't want to force it into dormancy at this stage, but think this late blooming is due to putting it into dormancy too late last year. // Any suggestions to have this plant fully bloom from late Spring through the Summer? Thank you.

      Hi there. I'm so glad to hear that you had success in overwintering your Mistral Begonia. You should be able to bring your potted plant in just after a light frost hits it. How warm is the space where you are overwintering your plant? Also, for begonias to reach full flowering potential, you want to wake them up 8-12 weeks before they go outside. That means putting them under grow lights and start giving them water and fertilizer. I hope that helps. 😊🌸

    Thanks for all your GREAT info. I just started watching all your videos. Question, have you ever started allium from seed? I have some seeds from 'Star of Persia' didn't know they created seeds. I have been searching for info and want to try, realizing they may never flower for 2 years. Let me know if you have any info or video that you may have. Thanks , and I will let you know next year how it goes.

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  Місяць тому

      Hi Sharon! Thanks so much. I have never started allium from seed but I may try this winter. I researched the Star of Persia allium seed and it appears that they need a period of cold stratification (4-6 weeks). You can achieve this by putting the seeds in your fridge, scattering them outside, or using the winter sowing process (or all of the above 😊 in case you want to experiment and see which worked best for you). It also appears that they need light to germinate so you'd just want to press them into the soil when sowing the seeds. I'd love to hear how you make out with this next spring! 💐

    What do I do I live in nw Oregon. In 8a a few frost and once in awhile snow

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  Місяць тому

      Hi Debbie. Unfortunately 8a is still too cold to overwinter tuberous begonias outdoors. I suggest you overwinter them bare root the way that I did in the video or you can overwinter them in a pot with soil somewhere where it doesn't freeze like an unheated garage or basement. If you overwinter them in a pot, they will die back and go dormant for the season and will not need water. Then late winter you can start waking them back up. I will make a video showing that process later in the season. 😊🌺

    Can over winter angle wing begonias?

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  Місяць тому

      Hi there! I have successfully overwintered my angel wing begonia in my garage. I overwintered it in a pot and not bare root since it's a fibrous (not tuberous) begonia and I only watered it once a month. I did not have it under a grow light and it overwintered just fine out there. You could also bring it indoors as a houseplant but you'd want to make sure you rid it of any pests first. It would need more water while indoors as a houseplant. 😊💐
