Excellent video. I made a replica! That right angle clamp is amazing I had to get one! What is the name of the gas valve you used on the box as an input? I’m trying to find one on eBay! Thanks
Thanks glad you liked it, I used a 8MM 5/16" GAS NOZZLE BULKHEAD ADAPTOR CONNECTOR from ebay , I used 8mm copper pipe to plumb the gas heater and the cooker hob, hence the 8mm connector, this is what you need www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-16-8MM-BULKHEAD-NOZZLE-CONNECTOR-GAS-FITTING-caravan-campervan-copper-camper-/143810429155?hash=item217bc500e3
@@vickybagley1967 yes should be ok but make sure the baton doesn’t encroach on the area where the bottle bottom retainer sits, if it’s a problem you could fit a smaller baton either side in the corners,
In the uk you are only required to have a steel locker if the vehicle is going to be hired out, plenty of conversions where the gas bottle sits under the sink with no gas box at all
Fantastic video, inspiring us to make our own gas locker. Could I be cheeky and ask what the dimensions of yours are? We want to try and replicate it (fingers crossed)
Thanks very much glad it was of some use to you, the box dimensions are height 57cm x width 36cm x depth 36cm all external, door is same width height 56 cm to allow clearance at the base for opening and closing, the box is big enough for 6kg bottle, good luck with your build
Just started building our gas locker but have tighter dimensions, ie 30cm wide instead of 36cm leaving an internal width of 28cm, is this wide enough do you think? Unfortunately dont have a gas cylinder here to measure
Hi, would say your dimensions will be a bit small, I'm now using a metal gas box ( going to start hiring my van out) which is 30cm square internally and its quite tight, would say this is probably the minimum size, probably better getting a bottle and see how it fits with the regulator and hose attached before fitting in your van ( you will need one eventually) hope this helps, Brian
Good job as always, congrats. Just a question, the gas locker should be opened from outside, I think it is mandatory, have you check the omologations rules ? All the best
Thanks, gas regs are different depending which country you are in, it is my understanding that here in the UK if you are using the vehicle for personal use, there are no regs concerning gas boxes and you are even allowed to have gas bottles tucked away under the sink, if you are renting to someone the bottle has to be in a metal container which can be accessed inside the van, the need for the metal box is to extend the burn time in the event of a fire, to keep naked flames away from the container and flexible tubing as long as possible, hence the need for copper pipe to be used outside of the box, I have now changed my box for a metal one as I intend renting the van but for piece of mind I would do everything possible to protect myself either way
Can anyone tell me if this is legal in Australia?? Our regulations state that the gas box should not be accessible from inside the vehicle, so that means cutting a giant hole in the side of the van!
Hello Been thinking of putting gas bottle underneath van and fresh water in van, to stop freezing, with the right fixings is this safe to do, or am I being stupid.
Plenty of conversions with refillable gas tank underneath vans, check out companies such as Gas-it, you can get a range water tanks for inside and some that fit around the wheel arch or you could just use plastic container
You do that is why there is a 50mm lip at the bottom of the door as explained in the video, but remember this box will not pass any safety inspections, it is just for folks who want to improve the safety of their own vans
im not sure why people take the risk with making their own gas tight lockers when for a little bit more you can buy these lockers. Why take a chance with gas in sleeping areas with the bairns?
Mainly for cost reasons, a lot of builders are on a budget, a 6kg metal box is around £95, you can make one like this for for a few quid, as long as you have an adequate open floor vent and the joints are all sealed correctly, the chances of any gas build up are negligible, and it's better than just having an open bottle in a cupoard.
No not a stupid question, the bottle connection is the most likely place for a large leak to occur, the locker will contain the gas and vent it the outside, there is also a vent in the floor outside of the locker beside the gas heater and directly under the exterior locker connection, and also a vent in the base of the kitchen unit should there be any minor leaks from the gas hob connections, I also have two shut off valves under the sink unit to enable me to independently shut off each feed should it be necessary
Yes I seen in the video, But I thought the 50mm had to be underneath ! Now I understand the 50mm lol not gap,
Thanks
No problem 👍
Brilliant thanks for this. I'm about to invest in a Gaslow for my micro camper and I wasn't going to also pay another couple hundred for a box.
Glad it's of some help to you
Great video, thank you!
Many thanks
Great vid thanks. What is the tool you are using to hold those right angle joints?
Many thanks, it's called a 90° Mitre Corner or Angle Clamp

@@thatdamnmackem thank you. I’ll purchase one! I’m just needing it for the hobs so hopefully this will be fine!
I have 6mm ply offcuts, that I can cobble one together if I use batton inside for the screw points...do you think that would suffice?

I am looking at making my own gas locker too, But I thought in the UK it had to be built from mild steel and the door had to be outside the van
