    I've been riding & looking at bikes for a very long time. Had an '07 Ninja 650r, loved it. Riding a big 103 ci 2014 Harley Softball these days, but if I were buying again either of these would be an option. You don't need 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds unless you are a track rider. Anything in the six second range will move you off the line faster than most cars; top end at around 100 mph should keep you interested. Don't be stupid, having top end capability of 150 mph (or higher) at a cost of two or three thousand dollars more, along with higher insurance cost and lousier mpg, all to twist the throttle a few times is a colossal waste. Not to mention it increases the likelihood of getting killed... Unless you're a very large person that cbr 500 will make you smile. That is my take on it.

    The Fz6r has the least amount of maintenance of the 2 bikes, when it comes to valve checks, the Honda CBR 500 valves must be checked at 600 miles, and then 16K there after ? The Fz6r is 24 to 26K before the first time. The Honda is a better learner bike when it comes to power, but be careful if you like twisty roads, they are prone to drag the foot pedals really easy, which is very disconcerting for many. The Fz6r is a better bike for those with prior riding experience, both get good MPG, and both look good too. My pick would be the FZ6r, thats my 2 cents. yl

    Great side by side compare - I am looking at both bikes I am leaning toward the FZ6R simply because I am not a fan of the all digital cluster on the Honda. Thanks for taking the time to do the side by side for a novice like myself.

    I have ABS on my new Ninja 300. You can't really tell the difference and you don't need any special
    training. It is just like a car. If you emergency brake, it staggers the braking and you can feel it grabbing
    intermittently. It just means you won't slide the tire out. This is especially helpful in the wet.

    I appreciate the good video. I am taking my safety course next week and I am definitely leaning towards the Honda CBR500R rather than going the 250 route.But now seeing your video that Yamaha is very nice also.Which do you prefer overall? If I do get the Honda the hard part would be what color? I like black, red, now the white with the graphics...hmmm not too crazy about it.The Yamaha, I love the White like yours..By the way how are your insurance costs for each bike?
    Thanks......

    I think no one should buy a bike below 500 even beginners, its a waste of money. You will get bored of it very fast and a 500-600 are not hard to handle. I got my license 3 weeks ago and was riding my parents harleys around (night train-1400 and v-rod-1200) and as long as you don't gas it anyone can handle that power... 250s are just throwing money away IMO.

    Thanks for sharing the video, nice bikes! I have a 2013 Ninja 650r - I looked at the FZ6R and I liked the bike a lot, but I like having ABS and for some reason Yamaha doesn't offer it on the FZ's here in the U.S...
    One question for you, not related to the bikes at all: Why does your rain gutter drain into the driveway next to the garage door? I used to live in the South, and with the rain down there I'd assume that setup would flood the garage during a hard downpour. Just curious. :)

    I have test ridden both, bought the cbr500 a few days ago. They are very close in feel. The fz6r is faster but heavier and I felt that. So I went with lighter and cheaper because in normal riding its all I need.

    I own an FZ6R and I love it. I had a 92 Ninja 600R that was ported and polished with restrictor removed. I got rid of it some time ago and now have the FZ. It's nice, but is restricted stock. This is remedied easily with a Dremel tool, just remove the left fairing, black cover plate, loosen throttle cables, remove the resistor plate and cut the bottom nub off the plate being sure to cut just around the bottom right bolt hole. Replace everything and your now able to turn the throttle a good bit more. I'd say you could hit 150 or 160mph afterward.

    While I tend to agree that anyone who is looking for more then a simple small bike would be better off starting with a 500 or so I do have to say that 1200 or 1400 is way more then any beginner should start with. I am a new rider also but from what I have gained it isn't whether you can handle it in a straight line but in bad situations such as hard cornering, braking, accel, swerving etc. Just my opinion though.

    I just purchased a 2011 FZ6R today. After moving it, getting it set up in the garage, I'm tired as all hell and drinking a few beers while watching some vids to recoup. I really enjoyed this video as I was looking at both of these bikes as my first. It doesn't look like you've uploaded much lately but I would definitely be interested in seeing some more content. As it stands mine has been sitting for two years, so I'll be taking some time to flush it out with new fluids and getting it set up with some new tires. Any recommendations on that front?

    CBR500R is supposed to have valve clearances checked at first 600 mile service , I see yours is just at 600 miles. Lots of riders report shims were needed as clearances were out of spec. Lots of dealers say this valve check is not necessary. Not true ..

  • @JamandTheHolograms
    @JamandTheHolograms 11 років тому

    8:43 it's because the CBR500R is designed to get you prepared for the 600+sport bikes. It's the closest bike I've sat on that's the comparable to Super sport with it's riding stance and geometry.The handle bars are just a bit more relaxed and the tank isn't as wide but if you jumped from a CBR500R to a CBR600RR you wouldn't notice much difference in the fell outside of the tank being wider and the bars back more slightly and the weight.It makes you appreciate the 500 more when you realize that.

    The FZ6R is marketed as a beginner bike along with the Ninja 650r. Not all beginners wanna go with the 250's as well, but the 600 super sports like the gixxer, CBR600rr and the zx6r are way to much. I personally went with a GSXR 600 but I have ridden dirt bikes all my life, and being 258lbs at 5'8" the 250 wont exactly perform great for me.

    Nice review mate. I live in Melbourne Australia and talked to the Big 4 Japanese dealers about these bikes. Yamaha does not even option ABS on anything less than a 750 these days, as to where you can get it for an extra $500 on the Honda CBR500R. Both are LAMS approved in Victoria, but the Yamaha is restricted. Suzuki doesnt even make the GSX500 anymore. They couldnt compete with the other three. I think a test run video would be very helpful. I cant decide which to buy :)

    I ride a FZ6R and had a 13 CBR500R. The FZ has motor that is more fun, revs like a sportbike unlike the CBR which has a much tamer powerband. The Honda has great MPG, and better handling. Other than that the FZ is more comfortable suspension wise and feels like the more " revvy" bike.

    European version 2011 here (XJ6 Diversion)...87hp, half fairing, less weight, cools faster but FZ6R looks as if it has a better seat and obviously improved wind protection. Lovely bikes if you ask me, I'd take the Yamaha over the Honda any day due to looks and engine power, a must for long trips especially with a passenger. Nice video.

    The inline 2 CBR500 aim for those who like to ride to work with better fuel economy in mind..its better in low torque...while the FZ6 inline 4 is more of small tourer..Wanna more power with a tourer comfort then go for the FZ1

  • @MadMarcusProductionz

    I am not saying any beginner should get a 1200, I was just saying that as a new rider myself I was able to handle that much power easily so new riders shouldn't be scared of a 500-600 thinking it is too strong. buying a 250 and the value decreasing as soon as you leave the lot is a waste of money. I am just saying a beginner should get a 500-600 and have fun with it for years and maybe upgrade in the future rather then getting a 250 and wanting something stronger in 6 months or a year.

    The Honda is a budget commuter that looks pretty good. The FZ6R is an all round better bike, but then again it costs about 3000 more so it should be.

  • @SoldierT105

    I have a 2012 FZ6R and I get on average ~48mpg. I ride it fairly hard, so I assume it could be slightly better. Worse mileage I have had to date is 42mpg. I do have a K&N high flow air filter installed, so that may be a factor. When I was in your shoes I decided on the in-line four cylinder because it doesn't vibrate like a twin at highway speeds...so smoother ride with more power, but sacrificing some fuel economy. Good luck!

    Yamaha themselves markets it as an entry level to intermediate bike. It is a de-tuned 4 stroke. I've come to learn that "entry level" is just a term used by people looking to one day ride a Super Sport. For a lot of people a 250,500,650 and bikes like that are more than enough to get them around in their daily lives and have fun with on the weekends. Supersports aren't for everyone same goes for Harley's.

    Perfect video. I had a GSX650F Love the bike, but a guy ran a red and I had to lay it down and the guy crushed it. FZ6R is the only sport-touring 600cc range bike that's make now. Except for the Ninja 650 which I do not like. So these two are main bikes I'm looking at for replacement. Although I'm leaning towards the 500 for practical reasons. How is the power feeling between the two? Is it completely unbearable in the 500 after the 600? Thoughts.

    What would give you the impression the fz6r is an entry level bike? I'd say it's a bit more of an intermediate bike. The 250ninja, 250CBR, 300 ninja, hyosung 250, ninja 500, cbr 500, ect would all seem to be entry level, they all have less than 50HP, and they are handle for noobs. The 50+ hp bikes would be more intermediate I believe. so comparing the two really isn't fair. IMO of course.

  • @_droid
    @_droid 10 років тому +1

    Interesting you mention they both get good gas mileage (also at least one comment here mentions that) but frankly in real life usage the CBR (70 MPG) blows away that FZ (45 MPG). At least that's my experience from people I know that own them and those are actual fuel used measurements, not the bike's computer bullshit.

    I have a 13 CBR500R and use to ride a 06 GSXR600. The GSXR600 is not fun for long rides and in city. You have to find wide open spaces to let it run. Way too much of a chore for me as I live in Seattle and mainly ride city so I traded it for a CBR500R and enjoy the CBR500R much more, the powerband of a inline 4 is too one minded on a supersport. It either fast or not feeling too good. So now on I only buy Twin cylinder bikes for the good torque down low.

    I get the impression that his wife has been riding significantly longer than he has. I wouldn't say you made a bad video, definitely a beginner video, but hey everyone has to start somewhere and with practice and time you will gain experience with bikes and making video reviews. You stated that you had only been riding for six weeks when you made this video and I'm sure you know far more now than you did then.
    I kinda agree with you that the FZ6R and the CBR500R are somewhat competitors. I don't think I would call the FZ6R a beginner bike because of the amount of power it makes. If a beginner uses full power between the corners then usually the beginner will be scared and thus unable to concentrate on mastering proper cornering technic which is a shame because the corners are the fun part of riding. Heck even Harley riders look for curvy roads and a Harley is not a cornering machine.
    Anyway, you and your wife ride safe and watch other video reviews to see what you may have left out, would like to include in your videos or even what you think you can do better than the other guys.

    We're looking at these as entry leel bikes for my wife, also considering the Ninja250/300... I have a good number of miles on a GSXR600 and am in the market for a 750 at the moment, but she has never rode a bike, and just recently learned to drive a standard transmission car... we will both be taking the riders course.... any input would be great, oh, and we're both short, my 5'7" and her about 5'5"

    • @NikonINC
      @NikonINC  10 років тому

      Hi Isaiah sorry for the delayed response. I have not ridden a ton of bikes but what I can tell you is that I was told by nearly every person to not buy a 250 or 300 because I would outgrow it in a month and want something better. The CBR500R is a very forgiving bike and great for everyday use, if you lay on the throttle a little too hard or hit the brakes a little faster then you should, it will mostly not be an issue. The FZ6R has about 25 more horsepower and that makes a big difference on the road so I guess it really depends on your confidence. I have been riding for about a year now and I am already ready to upgrade from my FZ6R, not because it isn't still a great bike, but because my confidence has grown and I would really like to have something I can start advancing my skills on. By the way the riders course is an AWESOME idea. My wife and I took it and I walked in not even knowing how to start a bike and graduated first in my class and it gave me all the confidence to get on the road afterwards. Good luck to you guys and happy riding!

      NikonINC Thanks for the input.... the CBR500R looks like the best bike for my wife, if it all works out she'll be getting one, but we're thinking of getting a Ninja250/300 on the used, for her starter, as she's BRAND NEW... and then saving for the 500R for her in a season or 2. It would be AWESOME to have a show room new bike, and with ABS, but it would suck if she then dropped it.... I know, it's just scratches and character, and we're all bound to do it some day... probably while parking, and in our case, probably in our gravel driveway....LOL I've got 6 bikes or so on the short list, maybe we'll just work on collecting them all...LOL
      Ninja 250/300
      CBR500R
      FZ6R
      GSXR750
      Ninja 1000 (the new one with matching luggage, I'm in love...LOL)
      Sportster Iron 883/ 883 Low/ etc....
      Yamaha Star Bolt (kinda like it, kinda don't)
      just saw this, HD Street 750, new from Harley....
      and a custom project café racer like the Yamaha FJR400 ;) on the lookout for a project ....
      I would love to have a few, so we can have friends ride with us, and so we can swap for a few minutes sometimes on long rides, for a change in riding position... Most of these can be considered somewhat economical as far as bikes go, aside from the Gixxer they aren't Sportbikes for insurance purposes, and I really like the 500R gets the 60+ MPG like the little ninjette does... economy... I'm leaning towards a cheap used ninjette for her to learn, and for a beater/commuter, then in a season or 2 the 500R, for her. For me, I'd be happy with anything in the list, but the dream bike from that list is the Ninja 1000, with a tank bag, luggage, a week of ME TIME, and lots of gas and burger $$, oh, and a sleeping bag....LOL
      Thanks again for all the input! I'll let you know how it goes!
      Isaiah

    The FZ6R is a FANTASTIC bike. It's fast, fun and handles great. My wife got one in Mar. I like it better than my Ninja 650 in many ways; engine being the main difference.

    response #2 Harleys maintain their value for a reason unlike most sport bikes because harleys are highly refined machines the fact that you said "its a really inefficient engine" shows you don't know what your talking about. Even if a 250 beat the v-rod off the line it would ONLY be the first 15 feet before the v-rod blew past him, but I HIGHLY doubt a 250 would even do that in the first place. My main point was a 250 is a waste because everyone always upgrades to more power.

    Hey bro, you seem to have some issues, not interested in feeding your nonsense. If you have a problem with the CBR500R's design take it up with the Honda Motorsports engineers or maybe you know something about this bike that they don't? I'd be glad to be blessed with your wisdom you seem to be more keen on it than the people that built it. Goes to show no matter where you go on youtube you always have a troll in the midst looking for an argument. Do mature sometime.

    LOL you sound like William Tells' son :)
    "quick, boy: take this apple, go stand against that wall facing back here, and put it on your head. Don't move until I tell you to."
    I hear there are openings on Jackass, you'd be a great fit for the show.

    i really dislike all digital HUD's.. for me i find them hard to read, but you probably get used to it.. i prefer the analog Tach, digital Speedo like most sport bikes have

    I think the ninja 650 is the closest thing to the FZ6R. While the CBR500R is closest to the Ninja 300 or it could be close to the old Ninja 500.

    the reason I think the cbr500r is compared with the ninja 300, yzf r3, ktm rc 390 etc. is because they are all under 35kw bikes I think which is the limit for an A2 license in Europe for 24y old and under drivers. The Yamaha is not. The Yamaha is much more bike in my opinion the Honda is much tamer and tuned down I think.
    Nice comparison though more relevant for NA I think. ;-)

    I never said need man, in reality no one NEEDS a bike in the first place and if they do then anything over a 250 is for nothing and what the FUCK are you talking about, there is no 250 that can beat a v-rod (1200) off the line, that bike is a cross breed between a street bike and a cruiser and its true power is only felt in high RPMs much like a sport bike. My dad said he hit the gas going 80 and had to back off the throttle before he lost his grip... the v-rod is a monster.

    The point is the fact that they're so similarly matched despite the price and function.
    And the fact that they're learner legal. Cmon that was too easy, did you even watch the video? XD

    Dont know why manufacturer starts coming out with two cylinder engine. It will definitely be much better and higher top speed with if it has 4cylinder instead.

      Fuel economy, easier maintenance, low end torque for cruising. Power wise it's probably because these are at the limit for cc and bhp for the Europian/UK A2 license, so they're the best option out there for a lot of people.

    • @wolfpackhd5002
      @wolfpackhd5002 8 років тому

      +Tom Payne yeah I'm limited on an A2 license due to age, it's quite annoying when a 24 year old may have 0 experience, pass their test and get on a litre bike and kill them self opposed to somebody who has had bikes all their lives and is fairly experienced with lines and twisties and are far less likely to kill themself... Logic for you these days 😂

    I think that we can all find the spec data for both bikes on the internet.
    what's in your video that is worth watching hmmm
