My wifes wedding band was left with the final hammer marks too. As time goes on, they will gradually wear smooth to a perfectly smooth, polished band. Takes about 7 years. There may be some symbolism about starting off with many facets and working towards a perfect finish in there somewhere? Incidentally, the master goldsmith Ken Moffat who made our wedding bands, also pattern welds GOLD DAMASCUS rings... Just saying.
Tip: Weld your bride's rings together after you are married. During normal wear and tear the wedding band and the engagement ring will wear thin. After four years, mine were noticeably worn. Had a jeweller weld them, now 36 years later, still perfect. Wishing you both all the best and many happy years.

we did so too. but we did use some gold strips and bend them and sodered the ends. Was quite a different approach than he did. Also in Germany there is a saying you should not make your own rings.

Would be cool but I think bells are usually cast. If you were to forge a damascus bell, I think you might need to press forge into a engineered mold and even then you would have to potentially only do half at a time and then weld them afterwards (welds would ruin finish).

@@rickyhorsburgh6581 milling would be possible but boy would that be a big stock removal job, and the Damascus pattern would need to be considered as stock removal can remove interesting patterns within the billet. Technically it is possible to forge steel bells (although the traditional liberty Bell shape would be difficult) the issue is consistent thickness of the bell wall to ensure a pleasant tone. I think it would be a good project although I feel Alec's forging skills are getting a little worse (due to lack of practice).

I turned mine and my wife's on a lathe out of titanium, but it never occurred to me to cast out of gold. There's also the lack of knowledge on how to do so!
for a clogged file.. the best solution to clear it is a wire brush. 45 degree angle strokes from both sides of the file... Nicely cleans the file out of wood or wax... I think the hammered finish makes it so fitting for you and a Awesome pair of custom rings. Lovingly made by yourself. Means so much more than a shop bought ring.

I'm a jeweler that completes between 20 and 30 various repairs and creations per day from start to finish, and I must say that it's really interesting seeing how a blacksmith grew into making jewelry, and the approaches you use to do things such as finishing and sizing. I can't say it's all what you'd call "best practice" but you make a wonderful final product. Good job, and good luck with the little lady! Keep it up.

I have been doing jewelry work for 25 years & I have learned every thing there is to know about it , it’s easy , I went to school for it for 4 years & I did a lot of pouring in my day & yes it is nerve racking to do but in do time you get comfortable with it , it’s just like anything else you learn .
I like that you went traditional with the rings and didn't try to make them fancy or a mix of metals together, you adding a hammered look is a great nod to your craft and makes it very personal. Congrats on your engagement!

Yeah, I'm actually curious how much $$$ is spread around the work area from the cutting and grinding he has done on these rings. But then, I realize that in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing compared to the value of their joy and love for each other.
Intellectually this is actually an excellent tutorial for some white smithing basics. I can't help it, though, watching him make his wedding band is ALL THE GOOD FEELS! I'm watching this in December 2020. Anything uplifting is a true blessing. Thank you, and congratulations again! i prefer to make the ring from a piece of gold wire. if you are good enough you will not see any solder joints. if you have milled it, then its pretty much work hardened from there. i know he liked the hammered finish which did look great, but he discovered it by accident and using a steel hammer on the mandrel. i knoww lot of people like raw hide hammer but i think a rubber mallet is the best. i would have probably used a rouge compound for polish, dont think you cant beat it for overall polishing. i know casting is convenient etc but i feel its not truley handmade when you do that.

It is so awsome that you are able to make all the Rings, I can imagine your wife telling your children and grandchildren, Alex made these rings with love. The hammered finish is such a nice touch, it is your personality and passion made in to a physical object that you will share together.
Being able to make your own stuff and having it all with the "Custom Made" imprimatur at zero additional cost is just way cool and such a win. The facets on those rings at a nice high finish add a lot of interest and is strangely appropriate given your chosen trade.
I've watched that engagement ring video 5 times now. It's beautifully made, the music, the pace, the amazing level of care and craftsmanship that went in to them was amazing.

Steel bells kind of sound awful. They're really only used on trains, most bells are cast from bronze or brass because of their acoustic properties.
Perhaps a damascus gong? He could also set it with one diamond annualy for every year of marriage.

i prefer to make the ring from a piece of gold wire. if you are good enough you will not see any solder joints. if you have milled it, then its pretty much work hardened from there. i know he liked the hammered finish which did look great, but he discovered it by accident and using a steel hammer on the mandrel. i knoww lot of people like raw hide hammer but i think a rubber mallet is the best. i would have probably used a rouge compound for polish, dont think you cant beat it for overall polishing.
i know casting is convenient etc but i feel its not truley handmade when you do that.

It is so awsome that you are able to make all the Rings, I can imagine your wife telling your children and grandchildren, Alex made these rings with love.
The hammered finish is such a nice touch, it is your personality and passion made in to a physical object that you will share together.
Being able to make your own stuff and having it all with the "Custom Made" imprimatur at zero additional cost is just way cool and such a win. The facets on those rings at a nice high finish add a lot of interest and is strangely appropriate given your chosen trade.

I've watched that engagement ring video 5 times now. It's beautifully made, the music, the pace, the amazing level of care and craftsmanship that went in to them was amazing.
