Balisongs are illegal in many places (including parts of the US, so be careful about crossing state lines with one) because they're associated with southeast Asian gangs, which scares people, much like how switchblades are associated with American gangs. You can tell some lawmakers don't even know what they really are by referring to New Jersey law, which actually makes _gravity knives_ illegal and defines "gravity knife" in a way that includes momentum-opening knives like balisongs. (A law written, incidentally, at a time when the only gravity knives in wide use were paratrooper knives, which were big awkward things whose only advantage was that they could be deployed one-handed if you were, say, stuck in a tree and needed to cut your risers while holding on with your other hand to keep from just dropping 20-30 feet.) I happen to have a folding pocket knife that opens just as quickly as any balisong or switchblade, and it's perfectly legal, because it's just the image that people fear, not actually having a quick-to-deploy knife. And, let's be real, the whole reason southeast Asian gangsters had balisongs in the first place is that they're just Filipino folding pocket knives.
