A big problem in Colombia, as well, is that properties age poorly due to construction companies taking shortcuts during the project. Both my apartment buildings there had huge issues after just 3-4 years. The one in Cartagena had pieces falling off the roof, the elevators never worked, the electricity and wifi system got slower and slower, etc. etc.. The one in Medellin started having cracks in the ceilings and walls. Water streamed into the parking lots from the swimming pool above, bricks started falling off the facades, etc.. And both were built by nationally known "high quality" builders.

I’m Colombian and have been living in The Netherlands for many years (so I’m a Dutch/EU-citizen as well). I wouldn’t recommend foreigners to move to my country at this point in time and probably in the foreseeable future. Crime rates have increased dramatically in the last couple of years, especially in the big cities, to the point where even walking on street in the evening is usually not recommended even outside of the city center(take cabs everywhere instead, from an app, not random ones). Among the 1.8 million Venezuelan refugees living in Colombia at the moment there are also a whole lot of criminals with nothing to lose, capable of such brutality even Colombians (who are used to being victims of violence) are scared of them. On top of that, now with a leftist in power things may go even more south when it comes to stability/safety and economy. A lot of my well-educated Colombian friends are seriously looking into moving abroad.

The first topic every foreigner likes begin with when mentioning Colombia is the rates of crime or crime in general. Violence has been engrained in our culture and as an optimist it will change with time, as in any country there is violence and crime, and it is much more showcased in Colombia. Colombia is a developing country with rapid cultural and economic change, its heritage runs through the land and its not like any modern country. Be modest and embrace the culture than attempting to change the culture.
The first topic I always like to start with is the women. Just wow, absolutely incredible! Love Colombia so much, their women are a gift from God. Prettiest in the world!

I lived 8 years in Brazil and all the middle class people from Sao Paulo living in London and New York told me the same thing before I moved there. The 8 years in Brazil were some of the best of my life and those original Brazilians are still living miserable lives in London and NY saying the same thing. Dont believe the Naysayers people, I've spent long periods recently in Medellin, Cali and Cartagena and it was absolutely magnificent!
@@microfarming8583 of course Colombia is magical, terrific and most people are some of the most hospitable and friendly you will ever meet. I have a permanent visa and cellular ID card so I have all the rights of a Colombian. The trip to living in Columbia for you gringos as you need to live like a Colombian this is not America.
There are many ways to get a permanent visa I suggest you use a reputable company to help you lots of paperwork. If you're on pension I think you need around $2,000 monthly income to qualify. If you live in an American area you'll pay twice what it would cause you to live in a Colombian area and believe it or not you're safer in a neighborhood with no Americans or foreigners. Bogota is like living in New York 9 million people don't care for it. Medelliners like San Francisco about 2 and 1/2 million people beautiful countryside. Smaller cities are better I live in Santa Rosa a small City where I go coffee each coffee country here. Okay I've been here for 2 years steady there's been no mass shootings there is crime everywhere compared to America I am an American this is peaceful country it's something about white boys who always seem to get in trouble no matter where they go.

I also got a bank account opened a year ago. At BBVA. But it really depended on the place.
At most banks they asked for the DNI, but finally found a bank that just used my passport number (just asked, not "bribed").
However it seems BBVA is blocking the bank account after an amount of inactivity... Just had a few pesos on it. So not much of a big deal.

Didn't Colombia just cancel R-type real estate investment visas?
It looked like a very nice option, but the M-type option is pretty bad (5 years for permanent residency, 10 years for citizenship).
Do you know if you're required to stay ALL 5 years continuously without leaving to quality for permanent residency? Also, any idea how difficult it's gotten under this new administration to get a retirement/standard residency visa?

Do all the Petro alarmists here understand that he appointed a market-friendly, neoliberal Finance Minister? Check out Ocampo's credentials. Petro is not another Chavez. I'm an American investing in a organic farm in Colombia and was very happy to see Colombia elect a leader who prioritizes the environment, promotes ecotourism, and wants Colombia to be a leader in transitioning to renewable energy. Given the exchange rate, there are amazing opportunities in Colombia to invest - I can definitely vouch for buying land and starting a carbon-capturing eco-friendly project that produces clean food.

I visited Caracas and Colonia Tovar in 2003 or so, when the Venezuelans I spoke to (cab drivers, bartenders, waiters, gun shop owners even) were still in the "Let's give this guy (Chavez) a chance" frame of mind, in other words before he destroyed the economy and to some degree the country. I'm sure many normal Colombians are thinking that now, about Petro. Good people usually try to be open minded, but if he has his way Colombia is about to get the rug pulled out from under it. I like Bogota, and have visited the major cities in Colombia looking at retirement options, but I wouldn't touch it now.
I suspect, the military will intervene before it gets bad!
