My brother was killed by a drunk driver when he was 25 years old. The driver fled the scene leaving my brother's dead body on side of the road. He served 2 years in jail, and continues drinking and driving. There must be harsher punishment for these types of crimes or more people will get hurt.

Reminds me of a friend of mine that I lost back when I was 13 (which was over 20 years ago), though it wasn't due to a drunk driver. He'd been with another friend of his (a 10th Grader at the same school), and his friend happened to find a handgun (that turns out to have been stolen) just laying on the ground, and in the act of trying to safely unload the weapon, it discharged and shot my friend in the head, killing him instantly. Just like that. He was perfectly fine one day, and the next he was just....gone.
Granted, in hindsight what the 10th Grader *should* have done was to simply call the police to report the weapon and then let *them* handle it rather than trying to do it himself, as they would know how to safely handle the weapon. If they had done that, my friend would most likely still be alive.

My wife works at a local community college in our city and while she was outside taking a break a young female student jumped off the roof of the building she was standing in front of. It happened so close to her that the impact soaked some spatters of blood on her clothes. She was very traumatized after that event and the college offered her free trauma counseling as a result (not just to her but others as well since there were others outside who witnessed it).
She learned later on that the student had a note in her backpack and it read “Mom and dad, I’m sorry I didn’t get into the college you wanted me to attend”. The female student was Asian by the way.
My wife, who is also Asian always told me that since that event she never put pressure on her own daughter (my step daughter) to do extremely well in school. Sure she wanted her to do well, but she never put undue pressure on her because she actually saw what the possible results could be. After that event she would also complain about how in Asian culture parents tend to put a lot of pressure on their children when it comes to academic excellence and how culturally she she wished it wasn’t the case. It really changed her in a lot of ways.

Another one I was waiting for the bus and a guy in front of me got struck by a car, he had flowers in his hand, definitely going to see someone he loved. Pronounced dead at the scene.

My dad had a lousy technology addiction to his phone because he was setting up a TV box business, and he was in charge of it all, so now he gets text messages left to right for technical help and questions. He even gets calls that ask for help, but since he’s so busy and trying to make money, he has to be texting & driving because he likes to make money off of his business. Since then, I have been in a car accident with my father because he decided to text instead of putting the phone down while there were four vehicles in front of him, stuck in traffic. He thought traffic moved, and that’s when he accelerated to 30 mph, hitting the backside of someone’s car, and that car hit someone else too. My father got terminated a few days later from his job because he wrecked his work truck and had to take a driving course to remove the accident from his record. He also had to take a drug test, but he passed. From January 5th, 2023 (date of accident) until now, February 26, my dad still doesn’t have a job and is trying to find one fast, but he’s getting interviews but ain’t getting hired quickly.
People don’t ever learn until they actually get into a car accident. Pay your consequences and don’t ever drink or text while driving. Pay attention to your surroundings and not your phone or any beers, whiskey or wine. It’s literally just poison for your body.

@@fushionfruitmashups I've had friends in the past also text and drive, because they think they're a good driver and that "I'll be able to avoid a crash haha"... I very actively avoid getting in their car unless I really have to. People just seem to think they're invincible because "I know how to drive" without considering the fact that there's nothing between them and someone else. I will never trust other people in traffic even if I trust myself.

This is what I don't like about our Justice system...in cases like this for something so reckless there should've been no plea deal and he should've received life in prison for killing another person.

It's because they're so relaxed and slow with their reflexes due to the alcohol, that they survive car crashes often.
Same reasons why toddlers/babies can fall off of something and get no injuries.
Tensing up your muscles and getting ready for the impact is the reason why you get injured or die.

It's not premeditated. If we put people away for life for this, than how is a life sentence adequate when someone rapes, tortures, cuts up women.
It is hard to fathom. But our justice system is supposed to provide second chances to people who make bad choices even when they cause death.
Back in the day we just executed everyone for everything and it didn't change crime.
He will either come out and keep his head down, maybe give back to the community. Or he will reoffend at which point he will go back for life.
His early release would be so heavily conditioned.
I mean, would you want to be beheaded for a mistake? Its just a slippery slope that is all when you demand more extreme punishments.
