- In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Mick Hawkes QCB.
Born into a military family, Mick attended 14 schools over his childhood. His dream of being a professional footballer came to an end after an unsuccessful trial with Lincoln City and he visited the careers office aged 16 to join the 1975 junior paras course. An ankle injury left him unable to perform any jumps, and Mick briefly left the army before rejoining 29 Commando. Passing SAS Selection on the second attempt, Mick went on to serve 14 years in B Squadron, and received his QCB for efforts in Northern Ireland. Mick was deployed to the UAE for the first Gulf War, and then posted to Bosnia, where he was taken prisoner. After leaving the regiment, Mick moved into corporate security, where he would carve out a 22 year career in locations like Kazakhstan and Nigeria. Mick and his daughter now run Hawkes And Co, and deliver security training for a number of sectors, including agriculture and rural crime prevention.
Mick is releasing a book in the near future, dedicated to his co-writer Nicole Johnston, who has recently passed away.

These are the best Forces podcasts I’ve listened to. Phil is a great interviewer as he lets the guests tell their stories with just the occasional prompt. Excellent! Keep, them coming pleases.
Thank you for your support! 😁
I was Scots Guards and nearly transferred to 40 Regt. They drank Germany dry. I ended up in the 1st Royal Tank Regiment. Just as mad for it. Retired in Thailand now and got a Goretex liver.
Me too mate, 40 field were in our garrison in Germany. 😊
I'm in Thailand also we're are pal
40 Fd were in Hohne in 86 when I got to 1 Armd Fd Amb, they came out to the 1st Gulf in 90.. Mad as a box of frogs 🐸
Thailand used to be beautiful until all the old pervs cottoned onto it
it does make sense Mick ! What a career...thanks for your service..
Haha Mick is fond of that phrase 'bizarrely "!🤣🤣
A great video, I met Mick in West Africa in 2017, and he is easily fitter than about 99.9% of 30 years olds that I know. He has a wealth of knowledge and a great leader if that makes sense. Easily the best interview and video that I have seen in years. Thanks
Thank you for your support 💪🏻🇬🇧
40 minutes in and this is already my favourite guest. 👌
That's great to hear! Thank you for your support!
Mick 'If That Makes Sense' Hawkes.
Mick "Bizarrely" Hawkes
Mick “Errr” Hawkes.
Zero disrespect mate, banter, I don’t have to say it but I want to.
Great podcast I’m going to buy your book.
Mick “bizarrely” Hawkes.
Imagine if they bleeped out every time he said that, would be like listening to someone in the corner playing Space Invader 😂 in fact I am going to listen again and count how many he times he said if that makes sense 😂😂😂 unless someone else wants to do it
You bunch of fuckers - I can't unhear that now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Class act Phil, makes for such a great interviewer. Humble and pops in a bit of humour or his own experience but keeps it running and lets the interviewer tell their story. This channel deserves a whole lot more recognition!
Thank you for your support! We'd love it if you could help spread the word!
been here since the channels first few podcasts and glad too see it’s blown up and got the attention it deserves keep it up Phil mate! 🇬🇧
It's all thanks to you and your support! Thank you
I met Mick in 1988/89 when he was on the Cdo Trg Team, I was 1 of the students-good times-1st time pass!
Another quality guest Phil and a fascinating debrief. Good luck with the book launch Mick and my condolences to you and the family of your co-writer

I absolutely love stories, and hearing the stories from this channel are absolutely some of the best - thanks Phil & co 👍🏽👍🏽
Glad you like them!
This is what makes the UK SF fairly unique, Mick, looks nothing like, Phil, Billy, Fox, Ant, Chris Ryan etc etc, in my time I have unknowlingly had conversations with two former SF guys, and at the time I quite literally had no clue
I agree, there is Hollywood SF & real life SF, one 6' 4 , 19 stone geared up the other 5' 7 10 stone.whippet lean.
I have had conversations with 4 SF guys🤷
@@Dan-mm1yl cool
@@noodlefringe1802you can tell he was a big guy. Even now he still looks like a unit, big old neck.

Fired this up on my lunch break earlier, 20mins in had to turn off. Watch the rest later. Banging interview Phil, content superb. Mick seems like a top fella. Lads at work saying to me..."what you laughing at" Love the banter, Phil your a natural comedian. Keep em coming. I wreckon this will be best so far. 😉👍
Another fantastic interview. Probably one of the most interesting yet in my opinion. FAB.
By far the best podcast on UA-cam Phil. Followed by Dodge.
Another brilliant pod, I've heard Billy tell that story of capture recently.
Keep it up mate. Makes my days pass easier when you have a new podcast to listen too.

Brilliant, thanks for sharing.
Absolutely smashing it with these interviews Phil.
I just love to see we old fat guys talking about our time serving. I was an RAF fast jet pilot, flying ground attack in the Jaguar , I doubt that I can get one leg over the coaming and into the cockpit nowadays, but what special memories we all share of our time working for HM the Queen. Keep it up guys.
Thank you for your support!
"Mark-one Eyeball",,,,, brought back memories of my old Warrant Officer who used this saying relentlessly in training,
Thanks for sharing!
Great pod cast again men. Thanks. Thanks 🙏
Thanks again!
I love watching the SAS guys talk about their stories. Every single one of them are unique personalities with different experiences.
If that makes sense.
been
Following you a while phil. Glad you got your own podcast. You remind me so much of my dad. An ex matlow. Same confidence and charisma the senior service teaches you.

Awesome interview and what a legend Mick is.
Thanks for watching!
Great interviewer and interviewee.,.. could watch for hours. Well done
The stuff about the artillery drinking culture takes me back. It wasn`t any fun if you weren`t a big boozer. I eventually joined the cross-country skiing team and escaped it. Another great guest.
Woolwich had some great boozers in the 80s
What a great pod really enjoyed this
Thanks so much!
Good job Mick and Phil ,thanks for what you have both done in and out of the service
Thanks for watching
Watched an interview with Billy (Mulligan Bros podcast) he also told the story of him and Mick getting snatched by the Serbs. Amazing to have the rare chance to put a face to who Billy said was"a guy called Mick"
Was intending to watch in parts , but got me engrossed ,watched in one . Another Great interview ……
Thank you for watching!!!
Amazing podcast and fantastic episode 👍
Watched a few now Phil. You only have exceptional people on (obviously). Another great interview with Mick. I was at Gutersloh and Bosnia the same times. Brings back my memories too.
Thank you for your support!
Thanks for this, if that makes sense
This was great. I'm in favour of these longer podcasts - much more engaging than the other froth on UA-cam
Thanks for your feedback!
Fantastic interview worked with a guy that was 29 RA in the Falklands had some great stories. Keep more of these interviews coming.👍🇬🇧
Thanks for watching
That was an excellent interview. Thanks so much for 2 and a half hours of amazing stories Phil and Mick. Just thinking about morse makes me sweat. That was the job of the RTG's in the Sigs and all guys going into Sigs SF had to retrain as RTGs. If Mick thinks the RTGs were impressive with their morse skills the STGs were on another level altogether. Those boys used a morse switch rather than a morse key. Mind boggling the speed they would be sending morse.
Best yet, just honest chat. Big Phil is in his zone.
wow thank you for watching!
Of it makes sense, excellent debrief. Thanks Phil
Thanks for watching!
Another interesting interview…… well done force radio.

Excellent. Properly Excellent. I'm looking forward to buying the book. RIP Nicole.
Thank you for watching, we'd love it if you would share this video to help spread the word!
Hi Big Phil, another incredible interview with a fellow 22 buddy. However was gutted that the Royal Signals were the chosen target for the brunt of jokes,.
I know as an ex Sig , that we ain’t considered hard within the green army and definitely not by anyone in Commandos and 22 Squadron. Let’s agree on one thing, Regardless of what regiment people have been in or are in. They all need Communication attachments usually trained by the Royal Sigs or have Sigs attached to them.
I truly admire you and your accomplishments, ever since I saw you interviewed on a pod cast, you have me in stitches. Especially the mini fridge and Somali pirate story.
I was in serious pain from laughing 😂 your a top geezer ✌🏻
Looks a tough man. Legends these guys.
Yes, yes, it makes sense
Absolutely 😂
Two legends . 🤟
Cheers 🍻
Brilliant guest, thank you both,
Yes, that makes sense.
I could listen to Mick all day long 😊
Keep up the amazing content
Thanks Darren!
I agree , best one so far ..
Brilliant podcast big fella, top respect gents.
Thanks John!
Fantastic podcast . Can I ask how did your ankle stand up to parachuting when with the SAS on the BPC at Brize and any HALO etc
Fantastic this one phil, a great interview, loved every minute.
Atb phil 👍
Really interesting - Mick has done so much. Jaw dropped when describing that close call with the pistol training.
Thank you for watching
Omg I was just watching the Billy Billingham podcast a few days ago stating that he had been caught by the Serbs and here we are listening to the guy he was with when taken, nice to see the face he was with and hearing his side of the story. Nice to hear Micks service story.
Makes perfect sense mucker, what a podcast though, enjoyed from 1st minute to the last.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant lads
Probably one of the best podcasts, i could listen to this guy all day. Its the anniversary of the loughgall ambush in northern Ireland today. I wonder was mick there 👊
Wow! Thank you so much for your support!
This definitely made sense.
Loving these podcasts. Are there a lot of guys from the shires in the SAS or SBS? I feel like I've met a few just from Lincoln area.
Beware the Walts and bloaters. If you’ve not been in, you will be fooled.
What a good all around guy he sounds..
He really is 💪🏻
“A screaming crap hat” 🤣 poor signals, taking fire 😂
Certa cito if that makes sense 😂
Great chat and nice to have one’s work appreciated, ex black 8.
