  • During the Vietnam War, Dale was a highly decorated Green Beret who served three years as a commando in the famous SOG program, whose mission involved extremely dangerous raids far behind enemy lines. This unit received more decorations and suffered higher rates of casualties than any American unit since the American Civil War. On one of these raids, Dale earned the first of several purple hearts as his right hand was mangled by a burst of machine gun fire. It is ironic that he became a sculptor, a field in which one’s hands are so critical.
Dale Hanson is an accomplished sculptor who has led a life of adventure and enjoyed numerous accomplishments. He is a black belt martial artist, an author, a pilot of fixed wing and glider airplanes, has flown aerobatics and is a Special Forces underwater diver. He is a disabled veteran and a member of MENSA.

Great Interview! My ol man was also an SF soldier, 173rd, and Ranger in Nam, He was also wounded twice and had a couple purple hearts with his Bronze Star, after losing his Eye,. He was medically retired... and was able to pull some favors & re-enlist back into the war , his story is so rare he was asked to write a book. He died from complications of Agent Orange in 2015, but his book is: Cyclops in the Jungle; A One-Eyed LRP in Vietnam. My mom still collects royalties to this day for it. He is missed.

The fact that this man LITERALLY was so equipped that he killed one of the largest global bad guys in the history of modern warfare for America but local police refuse to hire him is absolutely disgusting. I cannot even fathom how difficult that was.

I had an uncle who did two tours in Vietnam with the 1st CAV. Came back without a scratch. When he got back to San Francisco the Left fascists spit on him. He was put in charge of guarding a US Army payroll, an three Black Panthers tried to rob hi. He killed two of them but the third shot him in the face through the eye. Spent the rest of his life with a glass eye and a .22 cal bullet in his brain.
Wish they were as decent to vets in this country as they were on reservations. Sounds like the Lumbee.

Working in a loud environment with paintball guns, those people with 'the nerve' for it revealed themselves. All my friend needed was a tap on his shoulder and we went automatic mode. Later in Iraq, rockets scared the hell out of me, but I went to see if someone needed help. Thank you Dale.

I've always had a love for special forces history and gave Born Twice a read. While reading the auto biography Dale was mentioning things that sounded all too familiar. My great grandfather Howard Hanson grew up in Minnesota. A Decorated WW2 First Sgt in the Army, passed away at 93. Through some research and family tree digging my grandmother confirmed I'm actually related to Dale. Such an amazing honor to come from a line of heroic men, thank you for your service. I myself joined the Marines in 2012.

Doing some family research recently. A cousin of mine was MACV-SOG with RT North Carolina and RT Connecticut. He was KIA with RT Connecticut in To Ko near the Laotian border while acting as 1-0 (as I understand it) he was normally 1-1 on RT North Carolina, 13 Aug 1971. Posthumously promoted to SSG and awarded the Silver Star. Even though I'm an Infantry veteran, I didn't know anything about Studies and Observation Group until recently. I assumed SOG was just special operations group, but this is a whole other level. So, I'm playing catch up. Very interested since there is a family connection.

I also figured out too that my uncle, Bartholomew Quesada who served in the green berets, 5th special forces unit, made plenty of references how he couldn’t speak on the missions he was given and the lives of men that were lost due to these nature of these missions, for 20 years! I’ve read the MACVSOG books by John Stryker Meyer, and everything my uncle had said lined up with the books. He’s willing to talk about his experiences although I believe he’s be reluctant to share just because he doesn’t necessarily feels like a hero. He feels the true hero’s are the ones who passed on the field of battle

Being compromised, that is the reason my cousin, 2nd.lieutenant Billy Martin, first field force marine recon did not come home. His group was in a night position on a hilltop, in the middle of the night the nva came up surrounding the whole squad and simultaneously started throwing grenades into the marines perimeter. The nva knew where they would be. It has been said that a disgruntled marine with a Vietnamese girlfriend passed the route, and night lager information along.

If not, make sure he has an "open VA claim" when he finally does pass, so that you and your family can pursue Benefits in the form of Annual appeals, It has to be started while the Vet is still alive, so maybe help granda start a VA claim now, and just follow up.@@TheYoungCollector
