    best SUV in its class for adverse weather conditions and the day time running light design makes it look very elegant.

    I really like the design. Drives amazing while being well built with high quality interior and great standard equipment. I think it's a winner.

    That was my first impression, then I started to see the reasons for the change. I like the new modern look now. I like the comfortable interior, and the modern aerodynamic style. 31 miles to the gallon is very appealing too.

    I just bought a Latitude trim to replace a Dodge Journey. I feel it's a very solid car. I had a chance today to drive it in very heavy rain and it performed wonderfully. I did some light off-road with it and again it had no issues. I found (by mistake) it doesn't like mud very much. But after finding myself in the middle of a soft mud field I was still able to get out. it took a while but it did get out.
    Now to wait until winter and try it with snow.
    On a side note: the seats are very comfortable. Also with the 3.2 liter and 9 speed there was plenty of power for passing and I even found myself at one point doing 90mph but the engine rpm was still under 2k.

    We bought a "Sport" level Cherokee just a few days ago. We love the thing! The “Sport” does not have a, 4WD low range mode, but it seems like the 9 speed has allowed 1st gear to be pretty low by itself. The Differential Brake Lock (DBL) system is what impressed me. It gives, even the “Sport”, some impressive off-road capability, which I have already tested a bit. Waiting to put more miles on the engine before I do more off-road stuff. Even the Sport is probably way more capability than most people would want to put their Family Truckser through. The capability is there, if you need it though.
    I had a 2005 Forester w/5 speed manual and it wasn't geared low enough. The Jeep w/9 speed auto works much better in the woods for me. No more engine ping and dying when I'm trying to crawl. No crawl with the Sube. Better crawl with the Cherokee, but I need more time with it.

    They blew an excellent chance to have gone old school with the exterior ( straight edges, classic grill, etc.) and used a very modern interior. But, let's face it, most SUVs and jeep like vehicles never see offroad use, they've become commuter cars for soccer moms.

    • @jaysplace01
      @jaysplace01 10 років тому

      exact same thing happened to land rover/range rover. used to be great offraoders now only rich white soccer moms drive them.

    • @MihaiRUdeRO
      @MihaiRUdeRO 9 років тому +8

      You need to understand something, the compact SUV/crossover market is overflowing, if they stuck with "classic design" they would've gone nowhere. At least this car, exterior styling-wise, sets itself apart from the many many competitors. This is a practical car meant for both commuting, city driving, and the occasional rough weather driving. If they made the design any boxier (aka 'classical jeep'), the fuel economy would've suffered tremendously and nobody would buy them.
      If you want a real SUV, buy a gand cherokee. If you want a real off-roader, buy a wrangler.

      This looks like every other crossover. To stand out, they would have had to go "old school" and used straight lines for the exterior to actually set itself apart from the crowd.

    Jeep has been using Uni-Frame (Not the same as uni-body) since 1984 when the first Cherokee XJ came out. The ZJ Grand Cherokee was also uni-frame. The current WK2 platform (Grand Cherokee and Durango) is also uni-frame.
    The difference if you are wondering is uni-frame has frame rails integrated into the chassis. A uni-body has the main body/chassis, and then subframes that bolt on in the front and rear (like most cars).
    This new Cherokee is uni-body, as is the Compass/Patriot.

    At first I thought the look was iffy but now I don't think it's that bad. I think it's because of the newness of the vehicle that puts off a lot of Jeep enthusiasts (i'm not one by the way). Maybe in a future refresh the lights would be changed a bit but in terms of the new aerodynamic look of the body it's here to stay. After all it is competing with other crossovers like the CRV.

    You want to buy a nice Cherokee? Look for a mint condition late 90s or early 00s example with the 4.0 I6 motor. They're solid, reliable, they go anywhere and are easy to work on. This thing here should have been the new Compass considering it's some fancy Fiat vs. a Wrangler based product. No doubt this might drive more refined but if you want a Jeep and refined then pony up the extra dollars and get the Grand Cherokee. This Fiat shouldn't wear the Jeep name.

      Have you noticed that the only existing "true" midsize SUVs left are the Xterra, FJ, and Wrangler? The consumer and the market is changing, and it appears that Jeep did an excellent job in staying relevant to the times.
      I just bought a Limited. It's not for off road. It's an alternative to a minivan, but with the ability to handle a BIT of off-the-pavement driving.

    R&N, superb review, spot on. I test drove the "weasel" Limited last week and my impressions about the breaks, 4 cyc engine, interior are in sync with yours. The V6 makes a huge difference, that's what I'd buy. I tested the 4cyc and you guys nailed it, my impressions were exactly the same. Then I drive the V6, it's really nice! I don't mind the look at all. In fact, I had no desire for such a vehicle but saw one on-line and it stopped me in my tracks. Some say it looks better in person (YES). But I really like the styling.
    As for the market, I think Jeep is very smart here. I'm a Subaru kind of guy and was considering moving from my 2010 Outback to a 2014 Forester. That's nothing pretty to look at. IOW, this isn't a product intended to make Jeep loyalist's happy, it's to attract as you say, people like me who might consider an Escape, Subaru, or similar. In the past, didn't even notice Jeeps. I don't care what you call it. I don't care if loyalists hate it. The product got my attention in a big way! I'm going to follow through next week and test the Forester turbo but unless it's crazy good, I'll be buying the Jeep (Limited). The technology is fantastic! My only tiny complaint is the back with seats down is a tad smaller than I like but not a deal breaker.
    I have no need for true offroad but do live off dirt roads that get muddy and snowy so I think this vehicle is more than enough for me. Again, excellent video and review.

    If you could have only 1 vehicle for the rest of your life, the XJ would be it. Efficient, powerful, and quick, capable of commuting, off-roading, picking up groceries, lumber or the kids, going to a wedding, camping or towing a trailer was all part of its craft. It did all of these things and many more, while being durable, simple, easy to work on and possessing a timeless design. It also sold well in Europe and was the first JV vehicle in China. It was a CLASSIC.

    I just rented a 2014 Cherokee (Latitude) for a week while in the mountains of Vermont. Hands down the worst engine/transmission combo I've driven in over a decade. The vehicle it's self is fine, but the base model engine/9-speed nonsense was painful to drive. Oh, and the 'manual' mode was absurd too. It'll indicate you're in whatever gear you choose, but then shift whenever it wants. I could shift to an 'indicated' 9th gear while moving at 1 mph, or I could be driving in 3rd, and step on the gas, and It'll downshift while still in manual mode.

    I think it might do better than a Forester. Take a close look at those axle half shafts.. they are MASSIVE. Control of the rear wheels is at the rear differential, and in the Trailhawk model, you can lock the rear Diff. As long as the clutch mechanism is really durable.. It might do OK. The Trailhawk version did go though the Rubicon trail without assistance. That is more than most light SUV's can do. The looks... well... I don't know.

    My last 3 lease vehicles were loaded Grand Cherokee's & the last 2 with Hemi's. The Hemi's averaged 12MPG because I actually DRIVE my vehicles. When your monthly fuel costs are the same as your lease payment the vehicle doesn't make fiscal sense anymore and you look for something more cost effective. I now drive the Escape and miss my Jeep's sooooooo much.
    I will go test drive this BABY GRAND as they're just trying to compete with high fuel costs which drove me out of the market.

    You took the words out of my mouth in regards to this car. I don't know how you personally feel about the design; I don't have much problem with it, although it is polarising. But I think the deal-breaker for me, as well as a lot of other prospective buyers will be this car's fuel consumption, which isn't any better than a Mazda CX-5 with the 2-litre SKYACTIV-G motor, FWD and the SKYACTIV-MT manual 'box. Personally, it would have to be either that or a B/C-segment car I'd buy over this.

    • @44excalibur
      @44excalibur 10 років тому

      Sorry, but that reasoning makes no sense. Take a look at the Dodge Charger. Does it in any way resemble the original Charger, which was a two-door muscle car? Nope. The new Charger is a sleek, streamlined four door sports sedan, yet it's one of Dodge and Chrysler's best selling cars. So calling this car a Cherokee shouldn't be a problem. The old Cherokee is gone, and it's no longer a relevant automobile. The Grand Cherokee is doing well enough carrying on the Cherokee name. The new Cherokee is designed for the new market, and based on the current sales it's doing a great job.

    • @Alex50cc
      @Alex50cc 10 років тому

      i have no problem with the market being different but that would be like the next chevy pickup (equivalent to the silverado) being called the el camino, it's similar but it's a different class of automobile, i understand that markets change but you still dont call apples oranges because apples sell well

    • @Alex50cc
      @Alex50cc 10 років тому

      and the charger is a disgrace to the name as well

    • @44excalibur
      @44excalibur 10 років тому

      TheJack387 But the fact remains that if you tried to bring back the Cherokee in its previous form it would more than likely fail miserably(same goes with the Charger). Both cars are performing very well for Chrysler for today's market. There were people bellyaching about the Grand Cherokee at one point, but it's Jeep's best seller, and in the end that is what it's all about. It's not about apples and oranges, in the end, it's all about not being a lemon.

    Read the Jeep Cherokee forum on Edmunds, and all the folks that bought them and are having transmission issues. I test drove one, and just got the sense that it would not be reliable, seems "fussy" and balky switching in and out of the off-road modes. The testaments on Edmunds validate my impressions. Would love to support an American-made product like this, but can't, given the reliability history.

    • @sparkymarshall348
      @sparkymarshall348 10 років тому

      The other problem is the price: The basic model is about $20k. Jeep jacks the Trail Hawk model up to $30K. Then, the out the door MSRP, at least of the one I tested, was $38K+!!!! The price doubled to get to the options that made it worthwhile.......bad value at that point.

    I am not so sure about that. The '14 Cherokee 3.2 9speed 2wd is EPA rated at 19 city/28 hwy vs. '00 Cherokee 4.0 5speed 2wd being EPA rated at 18 city/24 hwy. Those are pretty close numbers. Add Vari-O-Cam, Direct injection, and a 9speed, and the XJ might be on top! Factor in the XJ's ability to rip out stumps and pull 5,000+ pounds, and the '00's efficiency of engineering shines through.

    I'm warming up to the styling though. I actually like the face. My issues comes once we get to the side view and rear. Something about the profile just looks awkward. I wish the beltline had just been a straight line all the way to the rear. And the rear just looks way too much like a Kia Sportage. I wish it looked a bit more like the Grand Cherokee back that. The interior looks sweet though. Also, the Trailhawk is the one to get, where you ever go offroad or not. It just looks badass.

    This car is not bad, I like the design, except for the running lights and the grille, but it is not so bad, the first generation compass was worse, and i think the Trailhawk model is very capable

    i think the front is OK & I like the back. I think the design definitely could be better, but with the interior, trailhawk capability, mpg... I'll take it :)

    And the best small SUV is Mitsubishi Outlander - it looks nice, it's fuel efficient, has a good price, it has nice off-road ability; and it also can fit 7 people! So.. I don't know what other manufactures are thinking when making small SUVs.

    I don't know that I would agree with that, especially for the Cherokee. All the Cherokee's competitors hit somewhere around 30 mpg highway. The typical Cherokee buyer is not going to want to pay a penalty to drive it. That is even more true in markets where vehicles are taxed on CO2 emissions.

    The Weasel is really nice inside, behind, and from the back, but it is horrendous from in front. That should be a Ravens hat btw.

    I just wish they hadn't called it the Cherokee. I actually am interested in this vehicle. I'd rather have this than pretty much anything else in the segment, but the name "Cherokee" makes me think of something completely different. If this were the new Liberty, or some new name, I'd have an easier time accepting it. All it really makes me want is an actual spiritual successor to the Cherokee.

    Jeep XJ was very efficiently packaged in regards to usable interior space to exterior size ratio. It was very efficient in weight to size ratio. Finally, it was more FUEL efficient than all of the similarly equipped SUV's in its class, including Explorer, Blazer, 4runner, and Pathfinder. In fact it was within 20% hwy + 25% city mpg of Rav4, even though its engine was twice its capacity! I'd say that is pretty damned efficient. Look up fueleconomy.gov

    I wish someone would just save Jeep from Chrysler. If I ever become super rich, I will. Is this what it feels to be helpless? I love my XJ, I love driving it all the time. I've owned it for 15 years and always felt like it will be there for me forever. Most peoples cars owe them but me, I owe my Cherokee everything, she's never failed me.

    I admit that this Cherokee is weird-looking, that another name would be more appropriate. According to its capabilities, this model is more suitable for on-road than off-road, like the Wrangler. Its like a Patriot, but with a lot of style and gadgets... Oh, by the way, at 10:30 it was hilarious to see the backpack rolling side to side while Roman doing a wild ride!!! LOL!!
