So all three of these 4x4 systems in the jeep do have the rear axle disconnect attribute in order to eliminate parasitic loss in the drivetrain to save fuel.
However, when it is that cold it will always be connected due to the possibility of ice and snow being present. 37 degrees Fahrenheit or colder this will happen. It will be heavily biased to the front wheels but connected nonetheless.
Hope this helps. Feel free to do the same test at warmer temps. You will probably see better results.

My 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk's (with 2.0L turbo) trip computer is always about 10% optimistic. On long mostly uninterrupted highway trips it will do it's rated 28-29mpg, but stop and go and city traffic really eats through fuel, worse than what it is rated for. After 23k miles I am averaging 21mpg (manually calculated) with about 60% of that city driving. Best tank so far was 27.5mpg and was 90-95% highway.

Drove my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Overland 4X4 V-6 from New York to Florida and two weeks urban driving in Florida during January 2020. Maintained 75 mph on highway, when not in traffic, which did occur around city areas. My average was just under 27 mpg. Have driven 1600 miles mixed conditions I’ve taken mpg at every full up and consistently got over 26mpg. I’ve done this trip four times with the same mpg. Real world mileage using adaptive speed control on highway. My Cherokee is totally reliable and just so comfortable on the highway.

Yes congrats on 100k subs in a pretty good pace. Much deserved. Anyway thanks for sharing this Steven, now that they FINALLY changed the alien/snake looking front end to something much more handsome and grown up, I am actually interested in the Cherokee if I can't get the Colorado ZR2 that I have wanted since they came out a few years ago. I would prefer the Trailhawk trim since I like to go hunting, fishing, kayaking, camping, etc... and since I won't be rock bashing/crawling that would work just fine.
Hmmm I wonder if it is the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer that they have had in the plans for a while. Something to give FCA a competitor to the body on frame extra large SUVs from GM, Ford, Toyota, etc.... They already announced the 4x4Es for 3 of 4 of their vehicles. Should be interesting to say the least.

I have a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk. It gets about 5mpg better in the summer time. I've regularly seen near 30 mpg highway cruising at 70 mph- mostly flat Ohio. There are a LOT of features with the Active Drive settings, as they also adjust the traction control system. My TH has been completely reliable, and is better off-road than a stock Wrangler Sport (thanks to the traction control and rear locker). It can just about match a stock Rubicon, it's biggest weakness is the relatively low ground clearance (9") and of course it can't be modified to the extent the Wranglers can be. Just know your vehicle and drive within it's limits. A stock Rubicon Wrangler can't match a Wrangler running 4" lift and 38's, either. ;)

  • @PatrickRich

winter mpg tests are always a little tricky because of the way they change the fuels for winter affects mileage. Winter blend fuel has a higher reid vapor pressure so it properly atomizes at cold temps. the net result according to the EPA is that winter blends have 1.7% less net energy than summer blends. There are other factors as well such as road surfaces with high Mu (snow and salt) and denser air to slice through. All things being equal you should expect a loss of about 1-2 mpg compared to summer.

I have been driving a 2019 Cherokee Limited with this same engine and 4WD system in a rental for the past 3 weeks. I agree that the 2.0 L turbo is a great choice for this vehicle. In temps between 35F and 65F I have been averaging about 27mpg driving back and forth to work in mixed driving. In an 80 mile all highway run however this thing hit 30mpg. The rental is a few years old and has 33K miles on it so it is more broken in then the one in this video was. I love the vehicle when I am inside it. It has a ton of features like heated seats and steering wheel, remote start, keyless door handles, push button start, auto start stop, panoramic roof with sunroof, leather seats, apple carplay, navigation, and blind spot monitoring. The only thing I have never liked about these is the styling of the body. I can't wait to see what they do to the styling with the next generation Cherokee. I hope they keep the 2.0L turbo and also offer a hybrid.

Doesn't smoke out of the exhaust pipe. 180,000 + miles on it. Some work done. Yet I can get 22mpg. Then also I know how to dive on snow and ice. Extra settings for me personally is pointless. Yet I really do like the new ones. Those look very sharp. Who knows. Maybe some day. Yet we will see. I've been looking. Take care and thanks for sharing this new Jeep.

I think for the price, you should consider the Grand Cherokee Laredo, with the Quad 1 full time 4-wheel drive. You can get with the altitude package, the convenience package etc with the leather, the nav, heated seats, heated steering wheel for 45k. It is not completely loaded, but well equipped and unless you are going hardcore off road, it is a very capable vehicle, a much more substantial vehicle than the Cherokee. The economy is not much less than the Cherokee either.

All you see up north in Ontario are Cherokee trailhawks, pretty sure they are more common than CRVs and RAV4s lol. I test drove a trailhawk with the 2.0L turbo and I was kind of let down cause I had higher expectations than that. The car overall is awesome and cool but the turbo motor is disappointing. Also, it would be better on fuel if it had a 3.23 axle ratio as apposed to a 3.73 ratio.

With proper tires our Grandcherokee Altitude with quad 1 is the most confidence inspiring vehicle we have owned. Plus it averages 22 around town and 26 to 28 on the highway depending on how fast you drive it. We have owned front drive biased AWD systems before and you can tell a big difference in the snow , the quad 1 in the grand Cherokee does way better of course that’s our opinion.

I have a 2019 Cherokee 2.0t limited. Got it from Crowley Jeep here in Connecticut. It cost me 29k out the door with everything jeep has to offer on it. We now have over 30k miles on her and have been up and down the east cost. Car averages 26mpg every tank. Hwy was 30+ all day with the active cruise control all the way up to Montreal Canada. Love it a lot. We upgraded from a 15 limited with the 3.2 liter engine and would never go back. They even fixed the transmission issues.

i have a 2016 cherokee 3.2l, i've found that fuel economy drops considerably when the temp is below 40 degrees F. I believe the AWD system kicks on automatically at this temp (along with the other temp sensitive items like heated seats etc) and kicks you out of 2wd. I've gotten 30+MPG in the summer but struggle to get over 24 in the winter.

Typically FCA AWD systems fully engage below 7c ( or somewhere close) and your fuel economy really suffers. I get 9.8 with mine. In the summer, I can get mid 7’s, but I have the V6.
