The DEFINITIVE way to play Mega Man 1-6 (2023)

  • The NES Mega Man games are timeless classics that deserve their respect. The various sequel series and spin-off series would not exist if not for the OG Blue Bomber. Today, I'll shine light on an older collection of ports that were buried underneath the modern re-releases of these games: the Rockman Complete Works, and by proxy, the Mega Man Anniversary Collection.
This video explores features such as Weapon Hotswapping/quick switching (that weren't present in the originals because of hardware limitations), Navi/tutorial modes for beginners, and other minor features.
    Thanks for watching!

Some things I didn't mention that are being spammed right now, and I'll own up to that. Some things just get forgotten during the scripting:
    - Yes, I know about the inverted controls of the Gamecube version that can't be remapped. If that is a deal breaker, then please stick to either another version or just the OG Complete Works (but again, those are not in english. I'll do a menu translation video at some point).
    - I already alluded to the fixing of slow downs and sprite flickering, but I never directly addressed it in Miscellaneous section, which was my bad. So yeah, those issues from the original games are fixed in CW.
-There are more aspects about Anniversary Collection that weren't touched on, and that part was deliberate unlike everything above. Like I said, if the video reached 1k likes (which it has surpassed effortlessly lol), Anniversary Collection is getting its own video and the "incomplete information" will be addressed.

the gamecube version has a rom hack that makes the controls normal (through emulation you can just remap it yourself, but it's useful for original hardware)

The input lag issue could just be from playing on a modern flatscreen TV. Most TV's have awful input lag by default, it can be made better by turning on "Game mode", but even then it's not great.
When you were testing the Gamecube version on Dolphin, the reason that you may no have encountered major input lag issues would be from playing on a monitor, which generally are way better with response times.
I haven't played or tested most of the Mega Man collections you mentioned, but I just had a hunch that TV's are the issue

As a GameCube kid who got into the classic series through the Anniversary Collection, I didn't realize how good I truly got it, lmao. That collection truly was a product of a better time, where the devs wanted to cram as much quality of life into the games themselves as possible.

I had the Anniversary Collection. I wasn’t impressed. Mainly because the music was handled weirdly, with fade outs in some of the tracks, and the title screens were messed with for some reason. The numbers didn’t have the dimensional gradient they initially had.

To be honest, Legacy collection will probably be my preferred version to play these games, mostly for the accessibility, but it’s a crying shame we never got another rerelease of the complete world version of 1-6. Hey great video, Magnus. I have a bestie who grew up with X1 and has cited the lack of hotswapping as THE reason she's had trouble getting into the classics (and sticks to the buster when she does play one of them)--just showed her this and she flipped lol. Guess we're playing RCW next time!
I don't _think_ this got mentioned but also of note is that there HAS been hotswapping hacked into every NES game by now, I believe? Involves Select instead of triggers, but arguably makes for a quicker jump-in experience for the more technically inclined who can set that up. I'm actually a weirdo who appreciated Cifaldi's preservation mission statement with LC1, but I can't say the consequences haven't also stung over the years.
Looking forward to your new stuff! I leave likes where I can, here's hoping this blows up.

I think your comments about the pacing of the classic games makes a lot of sense, I've always found the pause menu a bit of a fun killer in the first 6 games, which has discouraged me from using the special weapons at all a lot of the time, so good hypothetical there. I think preserving the nostalgia of the game by way of keeping those drawbacks from the NES is especially stupid since those weren't even a part of the games themselves, and just a limitation of the hardware. It feels more like pandering than anything.

I'm now coming across your video and I thank you for letting people know why these versions are still awesome to this day despite the releases of Anniversary Collection and Legacy Collection. I have a lot of info on gamefaqs regarding these games.
I'm so disappointed and furious that these versions still haven't been translated by Capcom over 2 decades later!!! I'm even more annoyed that they didn't include these versions with the legacy Collection along with the NES/Famicom roms. I worked on a translation hack for all 6 games back then from 2003 to 2011 on and off. I had the translation of all the text completed too. I had worked on the first 4 games and briefly on 5 and 6. Then my hard drive, of only two years died. And so did my motivation to continue the translation hacks. I did have a back up on another drive (which was 5 years older and still works to this day) but it was months older and I had made significant progress since then. If people are interested and would be wiling to support the project I would start it over again. Still annoyed Capcom hasn't or won't do it themselves.

Got it for $20 but it goes much higher nowadays. Thankfully for me, it was also backwards compatible with the XBox 360, but doing that presented some obvious graphics scaling issues, mostly apparent with the updated lifebars having extra pixels. Aside from that, it played great and it was a fun ride.
I also got the Legacy Collections just recently since they were on sale for $8 each, and even though they're clearly emulations of the original NES games, I wish they had also included the Complete Works versions or included their extra features somehow.

Thank you for the video, Magnus Zero!
Using nostalgia for re-releasing retro games keeping the original bad performance and no bringing new quality-of-life options is a very lazy and corporative excuse. However, in general, well known and no game-breaking glitches used for easing the difficulty or speed running should be kept.
Performance wise, the Rockman Complete Works games are excellent! No slowdown and (almost) no sprite flickering. That said, the scrolling between screens is still a common issue. It is possible to see small visual glitches during vertical and horizontal transitions, and sprites for large enemies partially out of the screen seem tore up even before touching the edges. I undestand that it was an issue less prevalent in old televisions, but it really annoys me how across all official re-releases of the original Rockman/Mega Man Famicom/NES games, Capcom did never bother to try and fix that. In emulation, the issue can be hidden by adjusting the overscan and "chopping" the edges of the screen (especially in Rockman 3/Mega Man 3, where there is a black bar at the left side of the screen for some reason...).
The sound effects are different in the Rockman Complete Works games because they use the sound fonts from the original European versions, instead of the Japanese ones... for unknown reasons. Old televisions in the PAL region used to run at frequency rates of 50 Hertz. That way, the sound effects possess slightly smaller loops and worse quality when compared to the ones from other regions. Another issue with the Rockman Complete Works is the inconsistency when using both the original 8-bit and remastered soundtracks alongside each other. The ideal option would be able to choose only between the original soundtracks or the new ones. Unfortunately, the sound effects and the music are a deal break to me over the Rockman Complete Works games.

the worst menu swapping was in megaman 6 when you switched between different armors and for some insane reason they thought you needed to see the transformation every single #*$%ing time. it's like if you switched weapons and every time you saw the transformation sequence when you beat a robot master.

I've been paying MM3 on emulator recently with a hack that improves the game a lot. Quick swapping with the select button, rebalanced weapons and tweaked level designs to better utilize stage gimmicks, it's really good. That, plus emulator settings to eliminate sprite flicker and lag almost entirely (in mesen). I think the hack was called MegaMan 3 redux or something like that, it's so good, it even has achievements in RetroArch.

When I went from the actual NES games to the Legacy collection I noticed quite a bit of lag. They were still playable but that sense of authenticity was diminished. If I could work them on my PS1 I would totally buy these. Im just figuring out the easiest way to allow me to play them

I grew up (and still have the Xbox version) and afaik, I haven't noticed much input lag on there. Only times I could think of it being a pain was during mm8 wily 1 (though that stage is still @$$ no matter the version). Other times I haven't noticed it at all (currently have it hooked up to an old wide-screen TV we've had for a while (still has component outputs with composite compatibility, though I use one of those av to hdmi converter things) and having semi-recently played through mm4 and 6 on there, haven't noticed any bit of lag on those games afair then again I could be lucky and the TV I use doesn't give this issue. Who knows. Also fun fact instead of an episode of the ruby spears cartoon, the xbox version of AC gives us the first episode of the megaman nt warrior anime. If memory serves, the reason I ended up going with Legacy Collection over Anniversary Collection for 1-6 back in the day was because I reasoned I'd have to get Legacy Collection 2 anyway in order to be able to play 9 and 10, and Legacy was cheaper than Anniversary.
Weapon swapping in the classic games does sound quite nice, though.

The complete works versions are (or at least were) available individually on the PSN for the PS3, and I bought this version of Mega Man 2 back in the day and I noticed the input lag on that platform. I wasn't ever sure if it was just a problem with that version in general, or if the PS3's PSX emulation was introducing the lag, but hearing input lag come up in your video made me want to mention the data point.
For most of Mega Man 2 it wasn't dramatic, but once you get to quick man... if you want to go past the lasers without using Flash Man's weapon, you actually needed to learn new timing, pre-emptively moving Mega Man where he needs to go. I eventually got used to it, but that level made the lag a pretty egregious flaw in that version of the game for me.

Thank you! Finally I'm not the only one who thinks that the Complete Works are still the best versions of Mega Man 1-6 and makes me wonder why can't we get this with the Mega Man Legacy Collection. As much as I love these games and want these games preserved for generations, I feel like there are some room for improvements these games could greatly benefit from which the Complete Works accomplished. It's similar to how I felt about the Taxman and Stealth remasters of Sonic 1, 2, and CD being trapped on mobile devices and we were only served just bargain bin quality emulation of the original Genesis releases of those games for many years and begged for Sega to bring them back to modern consoles and PC -up until Sonic Origins happened-. It's a shame that Mega Man 1-6 in the Mega Man Legacy Collection didn't get native ports like the later Legacy Collections did, the potential to give future generations a more definitive version of these games on par with the Complete Works or possibly better was there, but Capcom just didn't take that opportunity. I know that the language barrier isn't too much of an issue to play the PS1 versions and the database stuff was localized in Legacy Collection, but I still hope that one day that the Complete Works would get a proper fan-translation to really give non-Japanese speaking players the full experience of the Complete Works version of Mega Man 1-6 whether they do that through emulation or even original PS1 hardware.
And as a side-note: I got a copy of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on the Xbox 360 and it does a few differences than the GameCube and PS2 versions, one them being four different control schemes you can choose from though the basically swap the placements of the Jump/Attack buttons and the Quick Swap buttons between the Triggers and the White and Black buttons (or LB and RB respectively on an Xbox 360), I think somewhat better picture quality, the ability to adjust the screen size, and supposedly better load times, and this bit has nothing to do with the games in the collection themselves, it does replace the first episode of the Ruby-Spears _Mega Man_ cartoon with the first episode of the _Mega Man NT Warrior_. Unfortunately, the Anniversary Collection wasn't approved for backwards compatibility on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, and while it's playable on Xbox 360, some of the games in the Anniversary Collection are prone to weird graphical glitches (especially Mega Man 7 and 8) that wouldn't happen on OG Xbox. This makes me really wish that the Mega Man Anniversary Collection was backwards compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series since it could have probably fix these emulation issues and then some with the superior hardware than on the Xbox 360...

    • @legospacememe8468

the graphical issues did actually happen on the original xbox. it just happens with specific visual settings which i presume is the visual settings the xbox 360 defaults to when emulating the original xbox. the music in 7 sounded weird but im not sure if it was an xbox 360 or if it was also and issue with the xbox version. its why i stick to the ps2 version since it has non of these issues.

Never knew the complete works soundtracks was in the anniversary collection since the GameCube version is the only one I ever played but honestly, I find that to be a plus, which is not to say that the complete works soundtracks is bad, because it's not, they are excellent tunes and remixes. The problem I have discovered from listening to the big giant classic Mega man soundtrack that encompasses literally everything including spinoffs (except for MM11 since this soundtrack predates that game) is that the complete works soundtracks assigned remixes of tunes from different stages and such to the wrong stages. The only one I can specifically think of is one that is labelled as Top Man's stage on the soundtrack but it's a remix of the intro stage from MM7. Great track, but yeah, I think I'd rather have the original beepin boopin NES chiptunes if they can't give me a remix of Top Man's music.
Side note, I did notice you didn't mention the number one reason people hate specifically the GameCube anniversary collection: the un-remappable swapped placement of the shoot and jump buttons (to maintain what the A and B buttons do but A and B on a GCN controller are reversed from how they are on an NES controller). I think you get used to it after 30 seconds of playing, but it's definitely worth a mention.

  • @keelhaulsthingsthatdontmat3877

I always struggled really hard with the 'slide' levels of Mega Man 8 in the Game Cube Anniversary Collection. Like, way more than seemed normal for my skill level (which isn't amazing, but I would get stuck on these sections in ways I didn't get stuck on others).
I've heard it mentioned that those parts in particular suffer from input lag.
    But that's just anecdotal evidence.

each version has there advantages and disadvantages, I will always point people towards LC1&2 for accessibility and such because the Complete works series might not be easy to access and such. I hear Duckstation is best for RMCW and all. But LC1&2 is good if you want easy access to straight megaman action.
LC may not have the hot swapping or Saturn version of 8, but it's a good entry point with what it supplies.
Also the other issue with Anniversary collection's sound mixing, sometimes it gets too loud. Look at Megaman 8

The other advantage to playing RCW instead of the anniversary collection is better scaling. RCW runs in 240p, like the games originally did, while anniversary collection forces it to run at 480i, which causes a gross blurry image for these games. It won't bother everyone, but I'm a scaling nerd, so my copy of anniversary collection is pure shelf material lol.

  • @DefinitiveDubs
    @DefinitiveDubs 10 місяців тому

You could've mentioned how MMAC runs in interlaced 480i, while Complete Works runs in 240p. This is a big blow to the former because it makes the visuals look blurry and stretched. You apparently can fix it (the PS2 version at least) via hex editing if you run it on an emulator, but I haven't messed with that. Also, Complete Works had the Navi Mode remixes optional for MM1-3, but on MMAC they're forced on you, which is a big problem for MM3 since Top Man and Gravity Man's themes are entirely replaced with music from MM7. The only way to do this otherwise is to play the Gamecube version...but then you have to deal with the interlacing issue.

Gamecube is my favorite console that generation, so I’m not knocking it for some biased reason or anything. I own the Anniversary Collection on GameCube and PS2. The PS2 version includes remixed soundtrack that you can use during gameplay that isn’t available on Gamecube. Also the button mapping for jump and shoot is backwards on the Gamecube version for some reason, but is correct on PS2. For for those reasons I felt the PS2 version was better. That being said I owned the Gamecube version for years before getting the PS2 version, and loved it for what it was at the time, but just pointing out two pretty big differences between the two.
