Phone call with HMRC fraudster in UK 2021

- A reporter was phoned by a fraudster claiming to be from HMRC London and he managed to record the call.
If you receive calls claiming you are wanted by the police or HMRC and you need to pay treat it as a potential fraud call and don't give any real details.
The National Crime Agency says there's been "an explosion" in this type of impersonation fraud - when criminals spoof phone numbers to make it look like they're calling from genuine government departments, banks and insurance companies etc.
Graeme Biggar, director general of the National Crime Agency's National Economic Crime Centre, says the UK needs "a step change in our response" to fraud.
It costs the economy up to £190bn each year.
Phone companies say they are committed to taking action over nuisance calls.
Mr Biggar says there has been an "explosion" in the number of criminals spoofing phone numbers in the past 12 months.
"Phone companies have been used for fraud since they've been invented and it's a constant arms race to stop vulnerabilities and then stop them.
"With HMRC scams alone, more than 2,700 numbers have been taken out of circulation after they've been reported, but there is definitely a lot more that the phone companies need to do and can do."
His comments are backed up by a recent report from industry body UK Finance, which suggests the number of reported cases of impersonation fraud - including spoof calls - last year nearly doubled to 40,000.
However, the real figure is likely to be much higher, because many victims won't report fraud to their bank or building society, or even tell their family or friends, because of feelings of embarrassment or guilt.
What is number spoofing?
Ofcom, (UK's communications watchdog) describes number spoofing as people who deliberately change the telephone number and the name that is displayed as the Caller ID information.
"They do this to either hide their identity or to try to mimic the number of a real company or person who has nothing to do with the real caller," explains Ofcom on its website.
"For example, identity thieves who want to steal sensitive information such as your bank account or login details, sometimes use spoofing to pretend they're calling from your bank or credit card company."

I had this same call a while ago, it was a lady. she also did the "confirm the number was London courts". I dragged the call long enough and managed to get their bank account and sort code. I used the sort code to find out what bank they were using. I called the bank on my other phone (scammer was still on the first phone), I informed the bank what was going on and they managed to lock the account and put it into investigation. Their account had £1.6M, the scammer at this point was screaming all sorts of obscenities at me. the bank was able to return the funds to the people that had been scammed. Big win.

As an ex HMRC employee, I find these calls hilarious. Why would the court house collect taxes? Why not The Post Office or maybe Argos?

The script for these UK scams fit the US model of tax collection. They still haven't done their homework. I am amazed and saddened that people fall for this.

I am kind of let down that you did not waste more of the scammers time, I like it when the scammers go into full meltdowns and have their piece of mind disturbed in attempts to get any amount on money from you.
Whenever I get them I pretend to be old and can't hear them and say ridiculous things back to them, I like to think of it as a cost-free hobby. (And of course while they're tied up with me they aren't contacting someone who may believe them.)
Yeah I used to do this all the time and string them a long for ages, funnily enough I don't get that many calls now.

I had one guy that claimed to be "Officer Smith" (sounded like the guy on the phone in this video) from Immigration Canada. He said my immigration status had been denied - even though I was born in Canada. He said that unless I paid something like $5000, I would be deported.
I asked, "Deported?"
"Yes sir."
"You mean I am going to be taken to the airport, put on a plane and flown to Italy?"
"Yes sir"
"Ok, I'll pack my bags now, will you call me when the taxi is outside my house?"
"No sir, you have to pay the $5000 or you will be deported."
"Flown to Italy, you mean?"
"Yes sir"
"Yes, that sounds wonderful, thank you so much!"

I had a similar call some time ago, when he said the police will come and arrest me, I screamed down the phone, "they better be armed, they won't take me alive", then gave him my best maniacal laughter. He hung up.

The best thing about scammers calling is that you can say whatever sick, disturbing angry thing you like to them and not feel a shred of guilt ❤
Another good one is to say "I will go get my wife/husband/accountant, they deal with tax matters. Won't be a minute" then put the phone down, walk away and get on with what you are doing. Once my wife came back after 20 minutes, and the caller was going mental! Brilliant! Then we block the number
if they are calling you on a landline number, leave the phone off the hook for days, not just a few minutes and just use your mobile instead. If, its the same system as here in the U.K. it won`t matter if they hang up, they can still carry on a conversation once they come back the next day as the line is not broken, it will only be broken once you hang up. The meter will continue to turn at their end running their bill up through the roof.They might think twice about calling you again. The reason i know is that i used to get silent calls and the police told me of this trick. It turned out to be a neighbour who did it and his bill shot up through the roof from a low payer to over £1400 which he only had 7 days to pay it or, be taken to court. Of coarse he paid up and the calls stopped.
@@andyhughes5885 good point. NEVER use the same phone to phone a bank etc to check. The line will still be connected to the scammers, and they answer pretending to be the bank

When I detected a scammer call, which usually I can do before even picking up the phone, I sometimes like to answer with “Hello, Metropolitan Police Telephone Fraud Department, how can I help you?”.

Well done the recipient of the call. I will thank you on behalf of all who are now not victims of theft. This is the person I spoke to some months ago and the call was almost Identical, with the reference to numbers displayed. His behaviour is threatening and a less switched on person is going to fall for this. HMRC will never demand money over the phone - EVER!!.

HMRC would always write to you and as for criminal investigations, they wouldn't tell you about it nor would they have any influence or be in any position to make demands.
If there was a criminal investigation then that would be the police who handled it. You would hear from them and not HMRC directly. The idea of HMRC dispatching police officers to your house on a blue light 999 run is absolutely laughable.
I had a similar call, but tried to tell the bloke he'd got the wrong person because I was quite sure I didn't owe the amount he was quoting. I said, "Can you quote my National Insurance number, or my UTR number?" (Unique Tax Reference, which has 10 digits). He said, "your UTR is xxxxxx", quoting a 6-digit number. I said, "that's not enough digits for a UTR. You're from HMRC and you don't know what a UTR is? Very strange." That was the end of the call. That's the thing about these scammers: as soon as you ask a question they can't answer, they hang up - they know they're not going to get anywhere with you.
Unfortunately, training is now so bad in HMRC, legit employees don't know much either.
It's kinda annoying when they actually have that information though. I don't know how but a scammer had my correct NIN. I only knew it was a scammer because they used high pressure scammer tactics. But they literally buy information that has been stolen elsewhere.
it's a real shame that the internet service providers will not work with the law to stop things like this happening, because if they did then this type of crime would never happen (or rarely) again
UK folks are so well spoken and refined when dealing with this problem. As a "stupid American" I usually insult their mothers and and blast a portable airhorn into the phone the moment they say the sheriff is coming to arrest me for a bill.
In the U.K. a court is not described as a Court House, just a Court. In England its Magistrates Court, in Scotland its a Sheriff Court.

Just tell them you can`t hear them and to turn up their volumn once they do that you still can`t hear and a trick you learnt is for the scammer to press their hheadphones well into the ears then blast them with your whistle - next stop for them is the hospital with damaged eardrums.
With that comparison, I prefer the American method even though I'm British. Your way sounds a lot more fun!

Pro-tip: I've had this exact call several times and a lot of the scammers are wise to the fact people waste their time on purpose and have now started giving you their "warrant number" and "Court case number" and then asking you to write it down and then read it back to them, the implication being they'll know you're wasting their time if you can't read the details back to them. What I learnt was to write everything down, completely cooperate and spend 15 or 20 minutes telling them a long winded tale about how you believe your accountant has made a massive error, you've got tens of thousands of pounds in the bank, keep it going for as long as humanly possible, then at the exact moment you're about to pay.... tell them you'll "just the wallet out of the car". Then put the phone on the desk and walk off without disconnecting the line. I try to beat my personal best time each call. The best one was 37 minutes.

It brightens my day when they scammers call. I always waste as much of their time as I can so they can’t potentially scam some poor old dear
I sometimes do that too, and it can be mildly amusing or diverting for 10-15 minutes if you're WFH and between boring Zoom meetings. But the serious side to that is that they never call you in the evening, do they? It's always during the day: therefore, they're targeting unemployed and elderly people? Which adds another layer of despicability and shame to what most of us - who know what's going on - sometimes consider an amusing game.
I'd pay good money to listen to a phone conversation between one of these scammers and a sovereign citizen.
In reality at this stage you would have received a ton of paperwork from HMRC and no warrant would be issued

@@LouiseKernow2024 A colleague of mine had a sister working at HMRC when Working Tax Credits were introduced. Apparently the staff were horrified when members of the public just turned up expecting to be helped.
They can call you but you'd be very aware what they are calling about already like outstanding vat debt etc.
I had this exact same call, l kept them on for as long as possible. Acting upset and anxious not knowing what was happening that my accountant must have made an error. A colleague walked into the staff room the guy on the phone asked who it was and told me to make sure nobody was able to overhear us, he then put me onto someone else to take the payment. This was when l explained that my colleague stood next to me was a detective in the crime squad.. he decided to hurl abuse at me, to which l replied he shouldnt be talking to me like that with him being an employee of the HMRC and could l have his details... tinker slammed his phone down on me 🤔
My game is always to try and get them to hang upon me. I keep asking them to repeat themselves slowly. What their address is? What government agency do they work for? What the registered business number of their organisation is? What official record keeping practices they are using to verify my case? What my case number is? Etc, etc. I have an endless supply of questions. They usually give up after about 2 or 3 questions.

When I get these calls pretending to be from a U.K. city I demand a native English speaker. They once passed me to an Indian who tried his best to put on an English accent, it was hilarious

I got one not long ago, and they asked for my post code. I told them it was BE11 END and said that's what you are mate 😂.

I keep them on the line as long as I feel that it's progressing. When I'm ready, I tell the fraudster that his mother has just arrived for her weekly sex session with me. I tell him/her that: "Damn, she's good!". Why do they then hang up? P.S. If I'm feeling very pissed off, I tell them it's their grandma at the door!
It's always good to be able to waste their time if at all possible, before telling them you knew exactly what they were doing.

I've had this several times now and played it both ways. Some of the time I tell them that I'm innocent and I'll go to court where I'll be found not-guilty because I've done nothing wrong. This kinda trips them up.
I say to them, particularly the female ones, "Just what your mother would say if she knew what you are doing. She's be horrified that you were scamming people. She would be horrified that she's raised a thief".

They’re calling from abroad, usually from the Indian subcontinent, so beyond the reach of local (ie national) police & courts.
Their offices are all based in Park Road, Mumbai. There’s dozens of these call centres each with dozens of employees. The authorities are fully aware what is going on but receive bribes from the owners to turn a blind eye. From a corruption viewpoint, India is a cess pit.

It is good to keep them on the line as long as you can, so that you are taking up their time, so they cannot scam someone else. However I could not help having a bit of fun with them. When they called me and said I had defrauded on my tax, I asked them what sort of tax?
"What do you mean what sort of tax?"
So I went through every of tax I could think of starting with Climate Change Levy and ending with Income Tax (there are a lot of different taxes in the UK and it took me a couple of minutes - I am a retired accountant).
The reply was " Well, Income Tax of course!"
I replied " Is it Schedule A, Schedule B, ScheduleC.....".
They put the phone down. Shame, I was just getting going.

Yeah but this is all aimed at the very naive & the elderly UK generations who never had to deal with the inherent scamming DNA of certain cultures when they were growing up. Those of us from the younger generations are used to the tactics used by these despicable people.
Just before full lockdown 2 years ago, I was selling a relatively expensive prestigious car privately. Before putting it up for sale I had the car checked over by the dealer with a major service inc gearbox & cambelt - cost over £1.5k. I'd owned it from 6 months old & it had an impeccable history. The car was running absolutely perfectly.
A bunch of Asians turned up from London. They attempted to scam me by spraying oil into the twin exhausts when I was with the main guy inside the car - on the test drive the smoke billowed out as I demonstrated the acceleration. At first I wasn't sure what was wrong & it was only a bit later when the bonnet was up & I was distracted to the rear of the car by the other guys asking questions about some possible rear damage that I realised what was happening - the main guy had stayed at the front of the car, unscrewed the coolant cap & added some oil which he showed me on his fingers. I said that I'd have to get that sorted, to get rid of them - they said they were mechanics & could fix it but they could only offer about £6000 less than my price because of the possible severity of the engine damage. I said no, they kept adding £500 to their ever-increasing offers. I said no, I don't want to sell a car that isn't working properly, again just to get rid of them. At an offer about £4000 less than my price they eventually left & I called the police. They were never caught - the police thought they'd used a false number plate on the car in which they'd arrived.
I tell you this to serve as a warning about ubiquitous dodgy Asians.
As soon as he said that this message was being recorded and played in court I would have asked him if I could do a song, and if he had any requests. Then just start singing something.

Got the exact same call today. I just moved to the UK, which I think they somehow knew because they said i “haven’t paid my immigration tax and owe the govt an amount of £2146”. It’s scary how similar the conversation was, with them telling me I had 2 options of going to court or paying now, asked if I used other banks like Revolut and Monzo, etc.
they even offered to set up a payment plan so I could pay them what I “owed” over the next 12 months!
So please beware that these guys are still around.
I did call the *actual* HMRC after and reported their numbers. These guys deserve to be jailed for life.
i had one once and they asked for me by name. i said I don't live here as I'm robbing the place and pleaded with them not to call the police... that stopped them.
I had one insisting that he had already called the 'London Police' and if I payed my fine he would call them off.. . As I lived north of Glasgow my suspicions were aroused.. ..
You should have said to him 'What?! New Scotland Yard?'. Just so you could hear him reply 'No no Madam! Not Scotland. London!'.

I was recieving these during the first lockdown, while holed up on my lonesome in a hotel room. I was pretty sure it was a scam, but as I had been taken to court for real previously for something I was innocent of, it re-triggered my anxiety. Fortunately, I'm on the mend now, although reliving that experience now some two years on still fills me with the dread of waiting to go to court. Nobody scammed me out of any money. But they managed to use a scam to have a negative impact on my mental health. They're BASTARD'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it is of any help, HMRC would not just threaten you with court action over the phone. There would be long trail of correspondence and investigation (if fraud was involved) before you got to that point. Even then, any prosecution summons would have to be served in writing. In my day, these had to be served in person. If they refused to accept it I had to throw at their feet. I think they use the recorded post these days.
Having dealt with these people, not even scammers, I am always suspicious and act like I dont understand ! It drives them mad.
I just ask who they want to speak to and say “hold on, I’ll get them for you”, put the phone down( not hang up) and get on with what I was doing.
Last time this happened I asked the caller if his mother knew how he made a living...... turns out he was from Conservative central office.....

I've had a call pretty much along the same lines. The person in this video is a lot more patient than I was. I just started yelling swear words down the line after about thirty seconds.
When I get these calls, I ask in Welsh, (which I can speak), if they can speak Welsh, this goes on for a couple of minutes, then they hang up, no doubt fuming.
These fraudsters are useless, they called me last year, my phone has 2 sim cards, one UK number and the other is Czech where I live and that's where I pay tax. When they told me that the Met Police would be at my house in 30 minutes, I just laughed and laughed.
The thing I want to try out is to ask the caller what they're wearing. When they ask why, one tells them that a mental image is needed to aid in the self-pleasuring. But because my number has been registered on Telephone Preference Service (UK) for so many years, I sadly don't get the chance - and this is the same number that was printed on several thousand flyers when I was a club secretary! I can't claim the clothing question idea as my own - that came from a commenter on The Register many years ago - geeks know how to deal with frauds!
Just tell them no need to carry on with the conversation you'll just wait for the court papers to arrive.
I had one of these tell me that there was a non-bailable arrest warrant in my name. When I told him there was no such thing in the UK and he really ought to read The Bail Act 1976 he got very angry bless his little cotton socks :-D
I received this call today. I kind of got scared when they called me from the number in the hmrc website. But thank god, I somehow managed to end the call and escape from the scam. Thanks for your video. It was exactly like the same in the video that person talked to me.
I got called by one of these scammers. Led him up the garden path, when he realized he called me a "Mother F%^&er" and hung up on me. Rude or what?

Day by day this is getting bigger and bigger there should be a way of stopping this by issuing some kind of a unique ID or something.
There is in the UK you have your UTR and since these scumbags know nothing about you or even how HMRC works, you simply ask them to verify by quoting you that reference number as it will form part of your records with HMRC.
The moment they can't answer that question then you know what you have and you terminate the call

While driving to work a few weeks ago in Dublin I had a call from a UK number and a lady with an American accent informed me that she was from Irish Revenue & Customs. People should realise that a real tax official would know your tax number. Anyway real officials don't conduct business like that over the phone.
😂 these guys called me and said i owe 2k and said the police are going to arest me if i dont pay, then they asked for my name and address. So i said oh you dont know? So how are you going to arest me if you dont know my name or where i am. Laughed so hard then put the phone down it was fun 😂😂😂😂
Slushy i was also told i was being arrested later on in the day. I asked what time. He said in the afternoon. I then said No this afternoon is not convenient as i have a dentist appointment then i am taking my mothers for another covid jab. He got irate saying did i realise how serious this was. I said yes but today is no good and can we arrange a day later in the week which would be more convenient for myself. HE JUST HUNG UP. I love keeping these people on the phone as long as i can. My record is 38 minutes with a so called computer virus call and just kept telling him my computer is really slow so there could be a virus on it so what do i need to do?

Jesus! They don’t even mix it up! Here in the U.S. the script is the same! My answering machine usually screens them and deletes the call but the one time I got the phone and they said they had a warrant I told them to kick the door down but don’t let my indoor cat out! Confused and speechless -they hung up! LOL 😂
UK based here. I've seen the US scam calls. Then one day I got a call with your script! Our tax collection is completely different. We have Pay As You Earn. Tax is deducted at each pay point, according to your earnings in that pay period. PAYE. So their scam doesn't fit here. If I have time, I do like to have a bit of fun. I especially like interrupting the script with loads of nonsense until they lose it and slam the phone down!
I used to work in the enforcement department of HMRC. By the time things got to court (and Crown Court is only ever after an arrest for and charge of fraud and no longer in Enforcement's hands) there would no longer be any calls. Why call during bankruptcy proceedings? For amounts less than £5,000 it went out to, then, bailiffs and now commercial debt enforcement companies.
We get this in the US constantly, more so around tax time. I just hang up. Unfortunately, older people do fall for it.

I keep them talking making they feel like they are getting something and then give them the HRMC sort code and bank number. Always makes me laugh.
I always ask if their parents are proud of what they do for a living

Many wouldn't care. It's about providing for the family, plus many don't particularly like Westerners.
Simple way to check your tax, go to the Government gateway, set up access, you will need your personal details and National Insurance Number, its all there and instantly gives details of your tax for the current and previous two years. Payment for under payment can be made from there directly and yes they will not ring you ever.
I got a call as well but I quickly hang up and block these numbers. These scammers don’t know when to stop 🤦🏾♀️
Tax Authorities typically don't call, certainly not to inform pending enforcement. Just say "I'll wait for the written Notice in the mail. My Tax Attorney will deal with it". The end.

I have had cold callers and people like this scammer calling me for years. They once annoyed me, and 'got under my skin'. Nowadays before they can speak and with the call centre audibly in the background my opening line to them is to gently say 'I think you have got a wrong number'. This confuses them because because usually that phrase is is used by people who pick the phone up more than people who ring others. Often they put the phone down soon after, though the more intent scammers will be harder more resistant to politeness.

I had this tried on me twice, I live in sheltered accommodation,75, the thing that tipped me off was it was an Indian voice and I could hardly tell what they were saying.Also Iv been retire a while and aren’t well of enough to have to pay income tax on anything, so I told them I would report the call to the police and sod off!. The thing is there are some vulnerable people who would give away vital information out of fear.👿😡

Loved it. They tried to scam me. I also had a scammer from Sportify. They must think we are so thick. This gave me a huge smile. Nice one.
Unfortunately, enough people really ARE thick (though perhaps gullible/ foolable would be a kinder word), to make it worth the scammers time.
I had a call last week from them, I told them I would go to court still waiting for the police to arrive.
I had the same call, scammers pretending to be HMRC. I asked them to send me the paperwork, then I got suspicious. HMRC or anyone don’t cold call anyone. I reported the number to BT.

in Sicily the victims would have organized a visit to these swindlers by sending a couple of boys to their house. they wouldn't do it anymore. Greetings from Italy

Plot twist: the reporter was subsequently issued a fine of £19,000 and sentenced to 2 years in prison.
This guy calling from HMRC in London was simply trying to do his job and faced racism due to his Indian accent.
Shameful.
It sounded like the guy said he was calling from a GOAT house. An HMRC GOAT house in London, no less! Unless he was just KIDding,
Anytime I hear an Indian voice on my phone I only have 2 words - pretty universal in any langauge.

I have had a call like this a while ago i told him where to go in punjabi he put the phone down on me but seconds later rung me back and said the same to me 😁
What a bloody scam. Please be careful who you talk to on the phone. There are a lot of nasty scammers out there.
He was way too polite. I usually string them along but I keep making mistakes in following their directions. I love to hear the exasperation in their voices. After a while, I call them out but I am extremely rude when I do it.
