We use more expensive coravin models at work and they’re great for professional and retail settings. We have 15 of us who try the wines at work and with the coravin we don’t need to all taste the wine on day one like we would with screw cap bottles, then at the end of the month all coravin bottles get divided up and we each take a couple home and the wine is still in perfect condition. However as the only serious wine drinker in my home I find the pivot perfect for home. Sometimes you can’t finish a bottle in one night or you want to treat yourself to a little tasting and try a couple bottles in one night without getting blind. I almost always finish the bottles within 2 weeks and have never had an issue with the pivot, I know people worry about the wine staring to oxygenate when you pop the cork to put the coravin seal in but the exposure to air is minimal and has no noticeable impact
This is must-have for wine reps. allows a rep to sample their customers over a week or more, without wasting the sample bottle. Too many wines have corks that aren't good for the needle system.
That’s what I’m trying to use ours for but we’re really not having much luck. Some wines seem to keep better than others, but I'd say 80% are aging almost as poorly as if they did not have the Corvin attached. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? I’m putting the cork in place as fast as possible.
Have you tasted the wine after 4 weeks? I recently bought the Pivot and I'm quite disappointed. I tried my wine the following day and it tasted like day old wine. I store my bottles in a wine fridge and followed Coravin's instructions carefully. Curious to hear other people's thoughts on this particular product.
I’m having a similar experience. I am a Wine rep and we thought that this would be a nice tool to keep our wines fresh for maybe a week or two, but so far it’s primarily been very disappointing. The next day they taste day old. They certainly don’t stay drinkable for a week. I’m hoping I’m just doing something wrong.
I use a Coravin for my Italian wine collection from the Roscioli wine club. I am good at collecting, but not so good at drinking a whole bottle of wine by myself.
Ohhh wow you are a member too? We have a discount code if you ever want to get another shipment. Many wine lovers are like that, collecting more bottles than they can drink hehehe
Do you leave the pivot in the bottle if you think you are going to have another glass? Or always pull it out, close stopper and put back in when pouring?
The seals look good enough on the stopper that I believe you could keep it in for another glass. If you want to pour multiple times after the first glass, then I would take the system out.
Thanks for the informative video. I think my use case won't work for this. I want to open a bottle with dinner, not knowing if we will finish it or not. I want to preserve it just for a few days before finishing it yet. I use Private Preserve inert gas which helps, but even after just a day or two the wine is not as fresh. To use this I would have to start off using it as soon as I open it. I would potentially waste the gas if we decided to drinnk the whole bottle. I'm interested in your opinion, thanks.
Would you recommend this over the Coravin Five? I bought the Five but havent opened it yet. Just learned about the Pivot and considering it since we tend to open bottles and they spoil quickly even with those pump systems.
I like having both. The needle system for wines I need to taste and then put away for a little while. The Pivot system is good for opening a bottle that you will drink within a few weeks.
Hi. I saw in a video with the needle system, once they poured, they retire the system and left the bottle in the cellar... Do you know how many times thesame bottle can be punctured?
Could i let the opened bottle outside refrigerator using Pivot or I have to put it in the fridge? Since fridge is always almost full, maybe i could go for coravin six instead.
I have started using this. After a couple of days of storage, I’m ready to pop off the stopper. It’s really hard to do! Do I have to finish pouring using the device? I just want to pop the stopper!
@@drmatthewhorkey that’s my problem. I can’t get the darn thing out! I spent 15 minutes with a knife rocking the thing back and forth. There has to be something simple I am not getting. I don’t think I’m a weakling!
Why would the needle system only be good for 3 bottles (15 150 ml pours) and the Pivot be good for 4 bottles (20 150 ml pours). Is the argon cartridge bigger for the Pivot?
The capsules are the same size. Coravin claims it’s 5 bottles (25 glasses) for the pivot. It’s allegedly because of less wastage. I’m working on a video of this very subject bc I believe you can get even more pours out of a cartridge.
@@drmatthewhorkey thanks for the reply. Think I figured out why you can get 20 pours with the Pivot vs. 15 on the Needle version. Bot us identical capsules starting with the same PSI. When the pour they release gas and the capsule internal pressure drops. The Pivot's delivery mechanism is more efficient - larger orifice (more area) than the needle so it can deliver the appropriate amount of gas at a lower capsule pressure. If you had some way of measuring the PSI of both capsules, when "quote" used up, you will find the PIVOT capsule has a lower PSI than the needle capsule. If there was a way to move the "used" Needle capsule to the Pivot you could probably pour out another bottle.
Coravin claims you can get 20 full glasses out of one canister (I can get slightly more). Depending on the quantity you purchase, they are about 6-8 USD per capsule. So 30 - 40 cents per glass.
I bought the pivot recently and have tried it on probably six different bottles. I just didn’t feel that it worked. The last two bottles were 60+ dollar bottles that I ended up pouring out half of the bottle a week later because it was so bitter. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I even watched videos on the right way.😢
@@drmatthewhorkey less than two weeks. I would say after about four days in my refrigerator I could tell they were starting to oxidate. The first bottle, I realized that I wasn’t closing the stopper tightly so I read all the reviews on UA-cam on how to use it correctly and opened a new bottle, and still by the end of the week, the wine was just bitter.
I did read carefully on their website today that after you open the bottle it must be stored horizontally in the refrigerator and that storing it incorrectly could affect the taste. I store them standing upright. Another thing I might have not been doing is making sure that the stopper is totally dry and the inside of the bottle is totally dry which creates a good seal. I think I’m going to buy a cheaper bottle of wine and try that out before I waste another good one:-(

How do you know when the canister is empty and needs replacing?
Wine won’t dispense anymore once the the capsule is empty
The pivot also looks better if you are surprised by a synthetic cork.
hahahaha yes, I've been surprised by a synthetic cork on nice bottles of wine before.
Hi Matt!
For screw tops, what is better- pivot or timeless screw tops? Thanks!!
Depends on the system you use as timelesss are for needle based system

Does the pivot stopper work with a screw cap hole? Or only with cork removed bottles?
Yes it works with wines that had a screw cap closure

No idea what the number is but cork is elastic and Coravin claims it can be punctured many many times
Does it work on champagne!?
It's not recommended. Coravin states on their website that it doesn't work with sparkling wine and should only be used for still wines.

You could store it outside the fridge but just keep in a cool, dark place
