Check fuel pressure and check air flow meter (afm). Also make sure all intercooler pipe clamps are tight and no vacuum leaks.
came here to say this, but also ECU, had a 1jz soarer and after so much diagnosis ended up being bad capacitor in the ECU >.< but had exactly the same symptoms when everything else obvious checked like this. Worth swapping out if he has a spare one just to check since pretty ez
Also came here to say, vacuum leaks. Def makes sense when your putting your foot down it cuts out. Rb's don't like leaks! Check your intercooler piping.
+1 for bad capacitors/dodgy crank sensor@@keatonjones6115
@@keatonjones6115 is this the common fix with the soares when they recap the ecu
try the fuel filter sounds exactly like what my car was doing after it sat for ages.
100% MAF. The ECU cuts power at 2300RPM when the MAF starts to send inaccurate readings. Best of luck bro!
^THIS COMMENT! my s13 had exactly the same problem it was the maf(cut at ~2k rpm) ( it was a ca18det which is basically a rb20 with 2 cylinder cut) good luck fixing it 👍
If your vehicle won't go over 2K RPM (assuming it did prior to the issue), then your motor is most likely in limp mode. Limp mode is a feature of modern cars which severely reduces performance in order to do two things: 1) Allow you to drive the car to a safe location. 2) Protect further damage to the motor.
You know it’s a good day when Rex uploads. Love the vids man keep it up
very original comment
@@ignorantzombie you have a video called hiding from my family 24 hour ‘challange’ you spelt challenge wrong and made a fake 24 hour video and you’re calling me unoriginal.
Glorious way to finish the day
Might be worth checking the AFM. If it’s not good it can cause the car to go into “limp home mode” and will stop the revs around 2500K.
Edit: Although with that said I wouldn’t expect that to cause it to keep cutting it so maybe fueling related. AFM is an easy place to start though and eliminate.
Wouldn't be fuel if he swapped over the harness and the injector. But I'd try swapping all injectors and the entire rail, one thing at a time and see if it improves... but it's either AFM or fuel delivery. Could be a blocked rail, I've had that before on my EZ30
Ive seen others already saying this too, but it will 100% will be a MAF sensor issue. Not uncommon with the RB20 man. Check the wiring and make sure correct voltages are coming through as well as it could just be wiring.
The classic age old question of "why is my RB misfiring" 😂 i reckon almost every Skyline owner at some point has gone through the same process of elimination
start with the fuel filter/fuel pump sounds like it isn't getting the correct air-fuel mixture hence the hangs when increasing the amount of air with the throttle.
Few people have said already but yeah
CAS can be dodgy on all RBs signal breaks up as the rpm goes, cutting fuel if you take it off and see if it spins freely, the bearing can fail and itll feel crunchy when you turn by hand. My last rb25det neo had that happen and if I added oil to cool the head it would help me limp home as the failed bearing expanded when hot and tried to seize the cas
Afm, (give it a clean first or swap for a known good one) and vac leaks
Tps if wired wrong or reading incorrect can cause fuel cut as ecu thinks throttle is closed. Once had a car with the tps wired backward and it would think the throttle was closed when at wot so would cut fue
Coolant sensor generally makes them run rich so worth testing it as welll
Fuel filter is easy maintenance to rule out
Youve done fuel pump so thats all good
Fuel regs dont generally fail so id leave that to last
The coilpacks can get hairline cracks and break up under load but its normally at higher Rpm and under boost. You can rev it in a dark garage and youll see them light up
If its none of that check the ecu board looks ok as capacitors can fail due to age
Sparkplugs should be BCPR6ES and gapped to .8mm BCPR6ES-11 also work but need to be gapped down
Wouldnt be a bad idea to swap to a Z32 Nistune setup for ecu and move to an R35 MAF if you need to replace the AFM
Factory injectors are 270cc also something worth upgrading to a newer spray pattern if you do go to a tunable ecu (ideally larger) though if you can get a set of mote modern 270cc injectors with a better spray pattern I would
Actually after looking around Honda K24 factory injectors are 270cc and would be a cheap modern replacement (you would need to change injector plugs however), but could grab two sets from a wrecker and then diy flow test them
If upgrading injectors i believe 25det neo would fit they are factory top feed also and you get a matching set believe theyre 370cc. A 20 shouldnt require a z32 ecu as it doesn’t need to run vtc etc should be able to use the factory 20 one with daughterboard fitted
@@dazzanzl 370cc neo injectors may need to use orings from the factory redtop depending on fuel rail you use etc, your correct about not needing VTC control, didn't remember there was a nistune board for the factory 20 ecu :)
Fuel filter bro, could be blocked hence why it's cutting out
Yet to finish the ep, but in my skyline experience, put the afm on from the other skyline and it *should* fix the issue (providing the other car revs out and runs mint) if not, check wiring
Great video! Brings back so many memories when I had my r32, I had the same issue with the igniter box replaced everything and found that issue last. Also had the same problem with the fan hitting the radiator, using a larger fan they flex and hit the radiator!
From my experience, you could have vacuum ussues, there are a lot of hoses and areas where it can leak air, that too can be the reason for it just randomly stopping and they getting nothing above 2000rpm. Just a guess but I hope it helps.
Also it sounds simple but check the gap of your plugs, for memory I ran ngk iridium plugs that came gapped at 1.1, we would gap them down to .8 because the pressure would some times knock the spark out. Just a thought look forward to the next vid.
Fuel filter, vaccuum leaks , MAF, clean the throttle body, maybe try other coil packs if possible, and make sure cas ( 3bolt sensor on front cover ) has the key way on the exhaust cam sometimes they break off and it throws ignition timing out causes car to break up / not rev etc.. just take it off and look inside the cam hole see if there a half round. Never know.
Make sure your fuel lines are around the right way! This is common when people motor swap etc with rbs. not enough fuel to do more than like 2000rpm. Atleast you have the othercar for swapnostics lol check coils and afm too if no luck with fuel lines
Loving the progression of your channel and work man 🤙
Check the crank angle sensor they are quite common to go on the Rb26
Yeah would definitely be checking the AFM, had the exact same issue with an RB30 in my VL.
I always Jack the front of the car up to bleed coolant system. Highest point needs to be the filling point being radiator and heater pipes need to be under that to bleed air 👍
The skylines remind me of back home in Christchurch and cruising round town lol
there a 10mm bolt on top front of plenum undo to bleed it
Hey man!! i was the kid that said ''I KNOW YOUR UA-cam CHANNEL'' today, i was like so sad i didnt talk to you more, i was gonna ask you why'd you sold the mr2, i was so damn happy i saw you and so sad because im probably never gonna see you ever again and didnt make the best out of it so.
Cool
Throttle position sensor bro, I had a mate with a 32 that done the same thing went into limp mode and didn't want to rev over 2k after fiddling with the TPS is worked fine might be a similar issue and or AFM may need a clean hope this may help keep up the solid work.
From a mate across the ditch 😊
letts freeking goo! i have a celica and i'm doing her up (she was sitting for 2 years), i was going to ask how you were able to drive on the road without it being 'fully registered' but you answered that. however i do have two more questions, do you have to pay a CTP insurance?? and does the vehicle need to be / have road worthy? but anyhow thanks, and good job with the builds, keep the good work up!
Amazing job on the video and on your Nissan Skyline do everything awesome work on the cars 👍👍👍👍👍
Well I was right about the ignighter, the other issue I think is the afm
Lucky you can do trial and error with two cars so you can borrow parts until you find what fixes it😊
Intermittent issues generally indicate connection issues, it stalled on the bump on the driveway, my guess is the ECU main plug, notoriously bad for connection issues, clean the pins and connectors. Have it idle, and wiggle all wiring and under dash/ECU, try to pin point where the car stalls or flutters. My 2 cents
Im not a mechanic or skyline owner but id say vacuum leak, sounds like the same problem my mazda had after replacing all coils and plugs
get nissan consult and check AFM reading. probably not the AFM because it won't let you rev past 2500 regardless of idle or load. get smoke tester to check for intake air leaks. my guess is you have a very big intake air leak somewhere.
what happens if you 'soak" the spark plugs overnite or for a fw days, also the "sm" mini box you mentioned. if you scrub or soak that " as well would that work alot better? does that make sense?
Check the spark plugs, they were covered with carbon and on top of that make sure the gap is set correctly too
fuel pump, when you said you were accelerating it was dieing out maybe it only has enough fuel pressure to keep the car idling but not in gear becauve of the requireing more fuel in the revs?
Check out the fuel filter, fuel pressure air flow meter, and check to see if there are any vacuum leaks.
20's sound good you just have to rev them out so much to get any torque, that's where the 25/26 comes in. 25's are the best of both worlds imo. As for diagnosing your 32 further, coming from a 33 owner, I would check wiring to CAS and the CAS itself. There is a half moon key in the end of the camshaft that the shaft of the CAS has the corresponding side to which you slide it into when locating the CAS... but can snap or break in there and won't engage properly - worth inspecting just mark cas before taking it out with a marker. Also once you bled the coolant did you set the idle with the IACV on the rear of the intake manifold? It's worth pulling the IACV off and cleaning it, fills up with carbon (easy job) and set idle while your there. Check/clean AFM, replace fuel filter, put a walbro 255 fuel pump in (they are cheap and easy to do - also a good time to see if anyone has done it before and played with the wiring to it that may be causing issues), new ECU coolant temp sensor not the one for the gauge in cluster (they are close to each other but you will find which is which via google)... and go over the car for missing wiring clips/things unplugged and vacuum leaks/nut and bolt check etc.
Been waiting for a hot minute for this upload
I know that it's a more older car, but my Mitsubishi Mirage 2001, had a problem where as if you tried to rev it higher than 2k RPM, it would go back down.
Results were to be something called "Limp MODE" which basically reduces the revs so that you can drive securely.
One of the symptoms would be that it would turn the car off and it wouldn't be able to turn back on for a bit.
I ended up doing an OBD scan on the car and found this info, and bought a few sensors, and valves, like the EGR Valve, PCV valve, among others. If posible try to scan it.
Have you looked at the MAF (mass airflow meter) on the Nissan r31 skyline this stops it from reviving past 2.5k
Bro selling the mr2 was like selling the soul of this channel. Can’t believe you did that, that car was amazing.
the jerking from the car might be your injectors and fuel filter, i don’t know about rb20s but my VL calais seems to get all jittery and jerky from the filter being blocked
Check the fuel filter, good chance it's blocked. Great to see the mighty AU Falcon being put to good use!
When diagnosing misfire at our shop its strait for coils if not plugs then comp test then injectors
Mate you make me look under my hood to learn about my car love the skyline series
MAF sensor for sure man, as for the revs hanging usually the TPS would be the cause
Bro you can do it, stay positive!
went to a car show today and saw an AU rocking a benkispec sticker!
Lmao I was getting more nervous than Rex. Loving the series!
So what's the dealio with the painted skyline? do you plan on getting them both fixed and running?
As someone who’s has had a few skylines, check for any vacuum leaks! There’s like a million vacuum lines and one disconnected one can ruin ur day. Also have a look at the fuel filter and whether any fuel lines are blocked. Have a sus of the fuel tank too. Since it was stolen who knows how dirty the tank could be 😅
Lots of your issues sound like MAF, make sure you use OEM Mafs, on Z32 it matters a lot when OEM, I had a lot of similar issues on my Z32 and MAF was the solution (and using a recirculating valve) BOVs and MAF on 90s Nissan gives a lot of issues
A pipe off somewhere between turbo outlet and throttle body or a vacuum leak
Love your videos mate, so entertaining
5:45 Dense boi lookin gooood
Luv u x
Maybe the Throttle Body? Had a problem with a car that I had where it would just stall out of nowhere and it turned out to be the throttle body
great job man love your channel😎
Had a rb25 and after rebuild had the exact same problem turned out to be a cooked Maf sensor (afm)
there is a chance your cam angle sensor is playing up, try swapping the one off your other skyline, cant hurt, otherwise keep diagnosing haha
Howdy rex proud owner of a drama child 20det cefiro sounds awfully similar to a few different dramas ive had with mine firstly check the feed hose on the fuel pump and the filter sock for blockage
Second would be air leaks especially intercooler piping or even around the manifold though i heard an air leak just before the fan shroud exploded
Thirdly would be check timing grab a light and check it propely most rb issues are fixed with timing
And fourth the most common issue ive seen is the crank angle sensor have had 3 fail on my car bit difficult to diag but happy to walk through it with you feel free to get in contact if ud like id be happy to walk through it with you in detail
Your vids inspired me to buy my own skyline and fix it thanks mate ❤️❤️
check AFM and O2 sensor on exhuaust, im no expert but had a few RBs..
I think all the RB guys in the world have gone through this at some point 😂 basically spin the wheel of fortune and progress from there
02 sensors on rbs typically do fak all on rb20s but afm could certainly do it
I just finished my rb25 swap and when I get past 2k rpm it doesn’t go anywhere and I found out the clutch is slipping because the clutch fork locks out and constantly pushes the clutch halfway in. So gotta pull the fresh engine out just to fix it lol
Rex h do you mind if I use the short on this stolen r32 on where it half exploded if I use that one on one of my UA-cam shorts
AFM or CAS bro… had issue similar many times in 32s back in the day!
might need a noid light too
I'm sure it's the mass flow sensor (Maf), it determines the mass of air, it could be the solution to the uneven behavior of the engine. I didn't think of it myself, @39PsiOnTheDaily did.
Check AFM, TPS, Fuel pressure.
Do some swapnostics. Swap ecu with the other car.
don't you need to tune it after putting in a new motor if it has a turbo? Put a scan tool on it could be a vacuum leak. O2 sensor not working right?
It's only a stock motor and turbo being run by standard ECU so a tune isn't really necessary yet since nothing is really changed. Also R32s and 33s are pre OBD so scanning them isn't as simple as a modern OBD equipped car unfortunately
Might be a long shot, but check your ECU Relay lines, mind had issues with dying on itself while driving
Check vacume lines and Air flow sensor and Get a heltec ECU.
the problem is the afm, had this problem many times
happend to mates integra it was a maf that had been unplugged but his car reacted the same as yours did
Look at the tps sensor also, it can make a skyline do wierd shit
does it rev in neutral?. its probably the afm
Check 02 sensor as well
get yourself an ecutalk cable, plugs into the car & laptop shows you ecu data and any fault codes that don’t trigger an engine light (dying sensors)
i do have one and i’m happy to come help you out as i believe we arnt too far from eachother
cheers!
Something like this happened to my Silvia a bit back, try re timing the timing belt
hey rex can you make a youtube series on how you became a mechanic/ at home mechanic/ or maybe a video on how to get into building cars.
Step 1: buy a cheap old car that still has good parts availability, no point buying something to learn on only to find out parts are impossible to find
Step 2: buy some basic tools and learn the basics like oil and filter changes and slowly progress with more difficult jobs as your skills increase. Any time spent in the garage spinning spanners gains experience and confidence which builds up over time
what are the signs you can tell its miss firing
Probably the engine ecu is gonna need a tune after u swapped the engines… this is probably why it’s not running right to?🤷 just a guess though correct me if i am wrong
It's the same engine and it's using the factory ECU, it doesn't need a tune.
Airflow centre mine used to be dunked up do something similar
Maf and cas are very common to fail
can't wait for the end result 👍
MAF sensor or crank angle sensor.
Hmmmm may have to get one of them shirts.
Spark plug leads ? My Subaru did this
Skylines Australia forum will tell you everything you need to know about skylines
Blocked fuel filter?
Time to consult the RB20 forums
Can you start using episode numbers? I can't count in Xbox/my stolen car is a variable nightmare
Give us longer videos please.
are you coming to reetsuri????
Fuel filter and possibly fuel pump.
And afm also
My r32 did this and it was a blocked fuel filter & Tps adjusted incorrectly
I love skyline vids
i dont think this even exists on the skylines, but my eclipse did the same thing and it was my camshaft sensor, i know nothing of rbs since im broke (why i have an eclipse) but it could be a bad sensor of some kind
also thanks for the lancer and abandoned skyline shirts, keep the awesome vids coming!!
Good chance it could be a crank angle sensor, I replaced mine recently in my R33 to fix a similar issue so you could be right lol
Sup man mean vids and your tps is owta wack on your rb also try neutral your hicas should hit boost after that
i don’t understand why you just don’t combine the best of both cars and just sell off the other car that has the bung parts?
try replacing your 02 sensor
trying to bleed the coolant and the car is nose down on the drive way. bit stupid. the radiator should be the highest point so the air locks float to the cap
yeepie rex upload!!!!
If it does not rev over 2000rmp i had an issue with worn out piston rings.
Run a Carli on it and see what shows up.
It's likely fuel issue.
Sounded like a vacuum leak
