I met Ad-Rock at a grocery store recently, such a cool and humble dude. First album I got (Ill Communication), first concert, the Beasties will always be a part of me.
Antuan Grantham yeah i was totally starstruck, definitely the coolest interaction I’ve ever had. “You were my childhood idol!” Smiling to his kid: “hear that?” “Ill communication was my first album!” With ironic disbelief: “how old are you?!” 😂 👌
Gotta be honest and say I am a little jealous....But what a GREAT memory to have!!! I saw their last concert at Bonnaroo and had no clue I was watching the end of GREATNESS!!
"Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten. From the Battery to the top of Manhattan. Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin. Black, white, New York you make it happen."
Genuine love and respect for these men. Love seeing Jimmy just as excited as a life long fan of the Beastie's. I bought Liscense to Ill when I was a kid and listened to it repeatedly, writing the lyrics in a notebook. I had to learn every word. With each album I grew up and developed as a person a little bit more. Thanks for a lifetime of "good mixed tapes to put you in the right mood!" Adam will forever be in our hearts and minds. It was devestating losing him and I remember exactly where I was and who broke that news to me, knowing how influential they have been in my life. Thank you so much Beastie Boys!
I totally agree with you. I was fortunate enough to see them in the 90s with the monks in New Orleans. I had been trying to get to see them the last couple of years Adam was alive and just didn't realize the reason for the lack of tour dates. These guys were literally life changing for the kids that grew up on their jam's.
I’m a native New Yorker. Who got the great privilege of seeing them play on a rooftop, for less than 100 people. ( I was 16) the same day I was told that rap was not made by real musicians and that white rappers were the most cheesy copy artist there were. The three of them got on stage, without any ego, introduction, grand standing or advertising and played for two hrs, completely acoustically. Each member a master of at least two different instruments. Combining influences from the Metters in New Orlando’s funk, right on over to London’s porticehead ,trip hop. Ill tell you something, these three men new rhythm, timing, style and grove ,like they were the conductors of Soul train itself. In one set of samples they spread a musical education. I danced so hard I felt like I framed the notes. I went back to my friend who made those comments on artists and musicians ,and I said what I had learned in that night from him. That if you judge what you don’t understand, you miss out on the true wonders life has to offer. I tip my cap, tie my shell top Adidas, and and blow a kiss to the sky in the praise of the Beasty boys. There genius was a true gift, to those who open there mind and let there lite shine through. That light led me home... Shine on!!
Mythical and legendary these three guys from NY. We really miss the honesty and creativity that they transmitted in their songs. The fans will never forget them. Thanks Beastie Boys, thanks MCA. My respects from Mexico City 👏👏👏👏👏👏
"A-d-are-o-see-k I use the microphone like Picasso used clay Down with freckles from around the way Peace to Bambata and Jazzy Jay" it's too late to say this but happy birthday Ad-Rock
Much love to the Beastie Boys! Such an important part of my childhood growing up....from grade school, to High school...and all the way up into my 40's now, STILL a Fave in my collection!
We need to see more of them. These two have too much creativity, good taste and talent to sit on the sidelines. I know Yauch is gone, but 2 Beasties have so much to offer and need to collab again. Even if it isn't under the name "Beastie Boys"... they need to start making music again. It's so sorely needed. Current music is only getting worse and worse by the day. We need these guys back. You can't tell me that these two don't have more amazing music in them. We need it.
Everyone goes through music phases. Some we get embarrassed about. Some we will cherish forever. The Beastie Boys are something beyond cherishing. They ARE Hip hop in my eyes. Buying this book rn. TO AMAZON!!!
omg - I was the mixtape queen and one amazing thing was that guys who were 'into' music and trying to impress me, would deliver mixed tapes - mostly techno guys wanting to share what they thought was the best and in contradiction to what I listened to ... I forgot how precious I was about making those 'mixed tapes' until Mike D said 'then, you had to press pause at just the right moment' - and the pencil wind ... oh man - how painful that all was, but soooo satisfying when complete... you guys and Adam - life changers...
I loved making mix tapes! Plus since I was in art college, I painted and decorated the boxes and lists. Ad-Rock, my mom and I all share the same birthday, Halloween! Holla! BEASTIE BOYS FOR LIFE!
I have a Magnavox duel cassette vinyl radio equilizer cd tower that I got at a yardsale 10 bucks with money for my 14th bday (im 26 now) Still rips every format onto perfect 'reel to reel' copies. Beasties some Dust Bros and Quincy Jones on CD got copied over and over. I had alice cooper Im 18 on vinyl that I started scratching and speed switching pretending i was a DJ but my best talent was splice transitioning whole tapes of songs off the radio. The more you play and create the more your archive becomes a special time capsule. Im also an amateur cassette reconstructionist, unless your tape was dropped in an industrial shredder, I can rescue clean and rewrap whole film into a new casss. Dont ever throw away your eaten chewed cassettes! Vhs is a diff ballgame but ive done small fixes a few times
I miss my old ghetto blaster. It was a 5 speaker Magnavox with an EQ, dual decks, and a digital spectrum analyzer. It took 8 D-cell batteries and only weighed like 15 pounds lol. At least it had a strap. I used to blast some Licence To Ill back in the day!!!
Dude, we had to load it on our skateboards to get it to the park to play basketball and listen to jams. There are still a few OGs down at Venice Beach with old school ghetto blasters
I was watching this video and my 3 year old became interested and asked for a boombox too. I started searching the internet for one and ended up choosing a boombox with a built in BUBBLE MACHINE (iykyk 😉)
Legions icons what ever you say, The beasties were the best from around the way, If you had licensed to I'll you had the jam, Bumpin all day long into the a.m. Rappin over instrumentals on 12 inch b sides, Making mix tapes for school jams at rossville high, Good times in the eighties and kangol hats, It's not were your from ITS WERE YA AT! October 31st is his birthday? Well, his name is Ad-Rock, he's a Scorpio, don't ask him cause he just don't know, he's known to mop, he's known to glow, but don't get mad when they gots to go
1Love Almost see them I've live once but Mike D I heard was riding his bike and broke his arm so the concert got cancelled.. I think it was bank in 2000... right before 911
Clicked so fast. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the interviewed on a late night talk show or interview on any talk show for that matter. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I met Ad-Rock at a grocery store recently, such a cool and humble dude. First album I got (Ill Communication), first concert, the Beasties will always be a part of me.
I would be starstruck I literally had my first rap name based off his, King Ad-Rock I was King Ant-G from 86 till 98
Antuan Grantham yeah i was totally starstruck, definitely the coolest interaction I’ve ever had. “You were my childhood idol!” Smiling to his kid: “hear that?” “Ill communication was my first album!” With ironic disbelief: “how old are you?!” 😂 👌

"Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten. From the Battery to the top of Manhattan. Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin. Black, white, New York you make it happen."

I feel the same. Nobody knows how many times I listened to their albums. They are still in my heart.
Thank you for your story! ❤
R.I.P. MCA 😢
The beastie boys are literally my all time favorite. I fucking love them. I haven’t had the chance to see them live. And I regret it.
I totally agree with you. I was fortunate enough to see them in the 90s with the monks in New Orleans. They definitely changed my life and got me into hip hop more than I already was. I own every album and I still listen to them all the time.
Adam Pasquale regret nothing live in the now and find your peace in it

Oh shit thanks man. Idk what I would have done if I never heard those great words of wisdom. Thanks man. Cheers.
I love that Mike D's speaking voice is almost the same as his singing voice.

Words cannot describe how much happiness these guys and of course, Yauch, have brought into my life. I love them so much, so thankful for their music.

I should have married Adam. He is like fine wine ✨
For the record, dude is married to Kathleen Hanna, a legend in her own right... I have to admire your self confidence though.

This was so awesome to watch!

The Cooky Puss reference blew by the audience, but it was a nice touch. One of the few times Fallon is palatable
I loved making mix tapes! Plus since I was in art college, I painted and decorated the boxes and lists. Ad-Rock, my mom and I all share the same birthday, Halloween! Holla! BEASTIE BOYS FOR LIFE!
