While I was in Erasmus in Estonia it happened to me every second evening that some guy pointed at me and said "Isn't it weird that the funniest guy in the room is a GERMAN?" And while that was kinda flattering I also thought about why it would be weird. I know tons of people in Germany who are positively hilarious, it's just certain forms of humor don't appeal to Germans, specifically there seems to be a large number of interactions where you're just *supposed* to laugh whether it was funny or not based on the speaker's demeanor. Germans however don't subscribe to such niceties. If it's not funny we don't laugh.

I'm from germany, and yes, irony and sarcasm is really, really hard to translate (thats why i watch a lot of those movies in english). Deadpool for example was really hard i can imagine. They even changed some lines COMPLETELY because it wouldnt have made sense to just translate them. Its not an issue just with germany, it goes through every translation, where it has to be lipsync or its some reference to something else (which people might not know in another country, like some celebrities). But at least with Deadpool they really tried, Free Guy too, though it was not THAT impressive translated. On the plus side, germany is really good at dubbing movies, compared to the US. I watched some european netflix shows in german dubbing and english dubbing. The english version ALWAYS sounds like a german b-movie from the 80s. Or some crappy Videogame-Voiceover from the early 2000s, while in german you often can't even tell it's dubbed. But for german's not beeing funny: Yeah, we don't even have a SINGLE late night show here, that's how funny germans are in general.

Its the same thing with TV shows, particularly comedies. I remember watching Family Guy when I lived in Germany and they actually change the jokes for them to make more sense in whatever country their in, especially if its a joke that plays on words that rhyme or sound alike because in that countries language the words may not rhyme if translated directly and wouldn't make any sense.
I might not be the first one who think that Ryan and Conan sense of humour and jokes are kinda simmiliar in a way that its unexpected and flow naturally, would love to see more of these two in an interview
A problem especially in the US is that references are thrown around left and right. A lot of the humour of certain hollywood films (especially starring Ryan Reynolds) are references to things that are widely unknown anywhere else in the world. In the German dubs, the references are often not even translated but changed to something completely different.
his impression of the German reaction is hysterical - especially that very reserved, quizzical head tilt. I have been living in Munich for the last 13 years and...how can I put this delicately? Germans can come off as a bit autistic - for lack of a better word - taking things very literally at times, especially around humor. "Humorous" sarcasm is not their forte, at all. I think they find it more mean spirited than anything, hence not really funny, which I have to concede is reasonable and not inaccurate. But they DO have a great sense of humor, and very much enjoy a good laugh. Usually an expression of personal suffering (not serious suffering but a sort of "oh why meeeee!!!!" tone around something inherently not important) will get them giggling. I remember one time I got to work late, and explained to my most straight faced, serious coworker that I was held up as my cat peed in my purse and he was simply howling over that one, clutching his sides, tears flowing, gasping for breath. It was truly great :D They also like word play. I explained the concept of "hangry" and that inspired great amusement. The concept of playing "hot potato" with unpleasant tasks that no one wants to do also cracked them up. There is something a bit innocent or child-like about everyday humor with them - I like it.
I remember back then, even with the hype Ryan was kind of slept on as a legitamite actor, but I was a huge fan since I saw waiting and watched 2 guy and a girl. Glad he's so popular now
Funny how Americans make fun of German accents, since they are the number one monolingual nation in the world, in Germany almost everyone of the next gen speaks at least two languages
That'll happen when you live in Europe, surrounded by other languages, vs. growing up in America with several thousand miles between most of us and the nearest country that speaks a language other than English.

I remember Robin Williams describing being interviewed in Germany, German reporter: "Why do you think there are not many German comedians?" Williams: "Did you ever think that maybe you killed all the funny people?" German: "No."
Frankly, if Robin Williams actually told this story like this, he must have made it up. A German reporter would never ask that question because the premise is false. There are plenty of comedians in Germany.
Here a German humor: I remember Robin Williams describing being interviewed in Germany, German reporter: "Why do you think there are not many German comedians?" It's always going to be funnier in whichever is your first language. I am fluent in Spanish and jokes kind of just make me sad because they make me realize, right up until the joke happens, that I am not actually "one of them." I might laugh, but it's not the same. And man German was my second language but I can't understand a joke for shiiit in German. So it's just whichever you have the most connection with.

These shows are always exaggerating and the stories they tell are sometimes not even completely true, so no need to explain anything. A good (or rather bad...) cultural cliché always works, so they go with that in these shows.

I remember watching Family Guy when I lived in Germany and they actually change the jokes for them to make more sense in whatever country their in, especially if its a joke that plays on words that rhyme or sound alike because in that countries language the words may not rhyme if translated directly and wouldn't make any sense.
Great interview, and definitely maybe is one of the best romantic Dramedys there is, a lot of heart
Immediately after this he ran into Abigail Breslin leaving a taping of Jay Leno
At least he didn’t send Tom a basket of muffins with that champagne 🥂
Ryan Reynolds AND Steven Yeun in the SAME DAY!!!!!! Best day in a long time :)
Imitation isn’t always meant as an insult
Are you German? He is just lightheartedly kidding. He makes fun of canadians too and he is canadian. Learn to take a joke
Just goes to show that german oeople dont have a sense of humour
@@commentcritic400 that’s discrimination
Ryan reynolds is a guy that everyperson needs in their life.
Love Conan. His show is amazing
Team Coco could you put up Alyson Hannigan interview with Luke Perry. Also Sarah Silverman interview where she talked about geisha balls. And all the old Jim Carrey interviews.
I really adore his ability to tell stories well.
Ryan is not only HILARIOUS (especially in "Waiting"). but he's handsome AND humble... Dude ages like wine. #Bromance
Sometimes we sit in a workshop cellar in berlin kreuzberg. Me from former GDR one guy from BRD one from california one from bristol one from moscow. We laugh our mf asses of cause we share the same humour. Its not about borders, its about who is used to this fun and who is not. In germany we call ryans homour "dry". Not everyone gets it but who gets it loves it.
tbo, I think he made some of this up.
Two of the most witty people ever seen, love them.
He is absolutely stunning to look at. Dang.
Yes, Conan is a magnificent specimen. A king of men.
As a German…I don’t know what the problem of those interviewers was. You have a great sense of humor Ryan. It’s always a delight to listen to your interviews.
HE WANTS TO KIDNAP A CHILD!!!!
HAHAHA, I just love the deadpan delivery of lines in the German accent!
Vhat deadpan delivery? I don't understand. I zink it vas very emotional and from ze heart.
@@martinbuhrer3893 haha XD
Deadpool delivery
jesus christ shes *28* now. Lord how fast time flies.
Ryan was 29 when recording this.
300 dollars to Ryan Reynolds is like me spending 30 cents
Finaly I figured it out, Ryan Reynolds is a male version of Kate Beckinsale
I remember Robin Williams describing being interviewed in Germany,
German reporter: "Why do you think there are not many German comedians?"
Williams: "Did you ever think that maybe you killed all the funny people?"
German: "No."
Absolutely rude to say something like that. In no universe this would be funny 😒
Hehe good one
Frankly, if Robin Williams actually told this story like this, he must have made it up. A German reporter would never ask that question because the premise is false. There are plenty of comedians in Germany.
Here a German humor:
I remember Robin Williams describing being interviewed in Germany,
German reporter: "Why do you think there are not many German comedians?"
Williams: "Did you ever think that maybe you killed all the funny people?"
German: "Hang on, I don't get it."
... too soon? Btw that one we didn't kill
@@a.s.1998 It's hilarious.
Anyway, moving on to other german things. Do you love our bread at least?
I can't help myself but recall "Daffy dook" episode where Craig's and Geoff's logs touch when I hear this accent...
Ahh yes, ze simpel plæeseurs of Daffie Dook...
i think you can cut the "Ryan Reynold's sense of" part
Conan and Ryan make a great comedic duo.
Ryan Rebolds was hot back then but got wayyy hotter by the time Dead Pool rolled around
Great interview with RR. Good job, Cone Zone ❤
Robin Williams has been on a talkshow in Germany. He was asked about his 'take' of Germans not having humor..to that he replied-don't you know, you(Germans)killed all the FUNNY people...
Comedy
0_0 Wow. I know everyone remembers Williams fondly but I wonder how he would have survived growing up in our era of social media because dang.
@@becominghero9754 He's been on twitter

"You're trying so hard to be a good guy"
"I'm not gonna be the good guy....I'm going to be the GREAT guy"
Q: How many times do you have to exaggerate before a German understands that you are joking?
A: NEIN!
I - as a German - can proudly say: We don't have any humor.
Conan is so good at improvising when interviewing people!
Yup, hes always Deadpool since the beginning
If I read a title like "Ryan Reynolds' Sense Of Humor Didn't Translate In Germany " I expect that the topic is discussed at least a little. They mentioned it in passing.
"Two Martinis, bitte."
"Dry?"
"Nein, I said TWO!"
Wow, that was litteraly not funny xD
I apologize for the german press.
the average Germans gets the ryan reynolds irony and sarcasm!!!
Love from germany
As a german, i cringed xD They need people with more english speaking experience to interview American actors... Poor Ryan ;-;
For $300 you could've gotten a real giraffe!!!11! 🤣💀
I`ve just noticed Kate Backinsale and Ryan are similar.
Iilluminati
I've seen them compared before, but he looks just like her in this clip
How?
German: "I do understand humour when you are explaining it to me"
Im bilingual and speak fluent German and English and I can say making jokes and being funny in German is soooo much funnier than English. Especially if you’re from more country areas in Germany
It's always going to be funnier in whichever is your first language. I am fluent in Spanish and jokes kind of just make me sad because they make me realize, right up until the joke happens, that I am not actually "one of them." I might laugh, but it's not the same.
And man German was my second language but I can't understand a joke for shiiit in German. So it's just whichever you have the most connection with.
everybody critizicing Germans. i lived in Germany 10 years, my best friends are german, learned fluent deutsch. and German humor is the best. Germans are by far the humblest and mentally strongest volk..
Haha, right. Bow down to your masters . Worst , most cowardly, most destructive ppl, you mean.
I am an American and I never met one single German who would have taken his sentences seriously. I don’t know what interviewers he met but normally Germans understand sarcasm and irony very well. From my experience they are way more sarcastic than we are and have great humor. I realized that it’s actually the Americans who often don’t really get jokes.
These shows are always exaggerating and the stories they tell are sometimes not even completely true, so no need to explain anything. A good (or rather bad...) cultural cliché always works, so they go with that in these shows.
Americans know bupkis about humour. That’s why they import Canadians and Jews…..
Soooo true...
@@fillhixx Can you imagien an eastern German jewish guy?! Easter Germans are even far more direct end up front then Germans generally, and jews are just sillly anarchists. Well, here i am.
It’s a made up story to feed Conans and other people cliches. I doubt this ever happened, but hey,he needed a story, and the Germans are always welcomed to be made fun of. Him being Canadian makes it even funnier…
Ryan Reynold's humor is very well translated here in Germany. His dubbing actor is Dennis Schmidt-Foß, one of the best dubbing actors in Germany. He even looks like him when he smiles.
These impressions of germans made me laugh so much as a german guy. In general this stereotype is pretty funny
Ryan Reynolds could easily fix any world crisis by doing all meetings with presidents in a German accent
Soooo, to all Americans out there: How good are you in understanding irony and sarcasm in foreign languages? So maybe you shouldn't make jokes about it and start to learn at least your first foreign language. And only when you have the level to understand irony then and only then you have the right to feel superior.....
Oh the to and fro banter..amazing
Gosh didn't knew he had Lisp back in the day
I love this guy
Greetings from Germany
I tend to act serious when someone's clearly joking. It's only entertaining to me, usually, but alas.
Its weird because usually i am too sarcastic for my foreign friends…..
That is one hell of a german accent. 😂
as a german I must say it's pretty good too, usually people are over exaggerating the accent too much
This interview is gold
