      That's what's up! It's gonna be an easy process. Make sure you have a set of wires in case the boots come apart when pulling them off. I keep a spare set around, knowing ONE of them will break in half, and then I gotta do a damn store run! LOL!

    I only watched to see how long of a process it would take me before i started. I've changed plugs in dozens of cars but this video is very thorough and well explained I believe even for someone who has never popped a hood. Nice work my man.

      Thank you, brotha! I appreciate that comment, especially from someone that's changed plugs before. I'm the same way: always working on different cars. I just made sure it's not like a Montero Sport where you gotta take the intake plenum off or whatever before I start on a car! LOL! The Jeep was a process, but it wasn't a nightmare. The plugs are so long, feels like I'm ratcheting for 5 mins before one comes out! LOL! hahahahaha!
      Appreciate the love, brotha. I do my best to help people understand the WHY and not just throw stuff together like, "..do it! Just do it!" Kinda breakdown things so they can even work on other cars and be like, "...you got anti-seize, right?" hahahaha! I've pulled plugs that didn't use it and you can kill the threads in the block that way, if you're not careful. You know what I'm talking about because I'm sure you've had the same thing happen to you! Just STUCK!

      I always say GO SLOW when doing something new, just to make sure you covered all your bases. Smart move to take your time. Rushing thru things (especially the 1st time) usually ends up causing an issue that you overlooked.
      I think that's a good amount of time required to do it right, at a casual pace while thinking it thru and not rushing it thru! Good job, brotha! That's how you take care of a Jeep: spend time with it!

    Great job and Thank you! This is the correct video for a 2008-2011.
    Other videos out there show that they are for all models, which aren't correct.
    My daughter bought this car with 108K miles and I believe they were factory plugs, so I thought it was time for a new set. I put some PB penetrator down by the plug threads the night before, thank goodness I did because they were in there tight.
    As you mentioned for the passenger side two rear spark plugs, I found the easiest way was to turn the wheels all the way to the left, roll under the vehicle. Then pull off the cowling/cover on the left side, (3 x 3 mm allen head screws with nuts on the rear (you will need to reach up behind to hold the nuts).
    Pull the plug boots by hand, may have to twist them a little if the person before you didn't use dielectic grease After this use a 5/8 plug wrench with a 3" extension and remove those two rear plugs. Add anti-seize to the new plug threads and dielectic grease to the plug boots to make it easier for next time around. Then Refit the cowling and three bolts and nuts.
    The other 4 plugs (3 on the driver and 1 front on the passenger) can all be done from the front/side easily with extensions and without removing hoses or wires.
    Woolah and your done!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      I'm glad you said how to remove the cowling because I took mine off a long time ago and don't remember that process. Your comment DEFINITELY helps those that still have stock inner fenders/cowlings under there!! Thanks for that!!! And I always park the Jeep with the wheels straight, so when I do my plugs, I forget to turn the wheels to the left and end up having to squeeze thru there. NEVER FAILS! LOL! I always forget to turn the wheels the night before. I gotta make a mental note of that because at 48yrs old, I'm not squeezing thru a lot of areas with ease anymore. LOL! Work SMARTER, not HARDER!
      I'm glad you got all of the plugs out. I hate when people don't use anti-seize because it can create a world of problems down the road. It's like a dollar packet, and it's even cheaper if you just buy a whole bottle. LOL! Otherwise, we'll be like you said and having to soak them just to get them out without damaging the threads or the block.
      Thanks for the comment, and I mean that. The detail you gave is what's necessary for Jeepers out there willing to learn from someone else's experience. It takes a lot of the thought process (and wrong directions) in order to make the repairs/maintenance a lot simpler...especially for those that aren't mechanically inclined, but don't wanna pay $500-700 to a shop for some basic stuff. I wanna know how I can pin your comment to the top. I'll figure it out!! I like it!

      You ran em hard!!! I'm glad you got em done, tho! I think you're gonna love the acceleration now, especially with the new plugs. Man, 100k on the plugs is a testament to how quality the plugs may have been, but also at how you keep the engine cooled off and the quality of fuel you're using. I bet they were DARK by now, tho! But still, 100k is amazing!
      I keep an extra set of wires in my garage, tho. I've always replaced wires as needed. If the wires are good and still solid when you pull em off, you'll get good spark. but the moment the wires are going bad, you'll know when you try to pull it off and it snaps and leave the aluminum tip still stuck on the plug! That means that wire was already on its way out. I may replace all my wires in January and keep the used ones in the garage as spares. Now you're motivating me. LOL!
      Very welcome and thanks for checking out the video, brotha!! Appreciate it!

    Thanks a bunch for this very clear video. I went and did my spark plugs right after your video. Took a few hours though... because I didn't get new wires ( I broke 2 ) but managed to get it done! Even got the socket and the anti seize & the spark plug goop. ( Can't remember the name )
    I found 3 hella foul plugs and was shocked my car was even running. One plug straight up look like it was melting. Had metal balls and everything. Something I see a lot on PCB's at work from poor soldering.

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  Рік тому

      Yup! When that metal gets brittle and hot, it can start heat welding itself as it sparks. Soon that little piece breaks off and ends up in the cylinder if it can get past the valve. You caught it in time! That's what I'm talking about: catching the issues before they turn into bigger ones! Glad you took a risk and did it.
      I keep spare spark plug wires in the garage. Over time, you'll snap one when you least expect it, so always keep a box somewhere. LOL! Even if you have some that are too long, at least you can install it until you get the correct size at the store! I have TWO boxes of wires because I've fried the #2 and the #4 (both kinda short) by not securing them and they touched the long tube headers I run. I felt it kinda chugging one day, and sure enough: the wire touched the header. Now it's secured up higher and I don't have that issue. But that's why I keep spares in the garage.
      Now that you've done it, the nex time will be a lot easier. Two hours isn't that bad, especially with breaking parts. Some folks sit overnight or even have to go DAYS when something snaps! LOL! Two hours is about right for the first time with broken wires and all! I call it a win!

      You'll get better gas mileage and more efficient spark detonation, hopefully! If anything else, you'll get to look at the plugs to see if they're getting brittle and time to be replaced. You don't want that tip breaking off and ending up in the cylinder. Oh, if you do an oil change, add a can of RESTORE to the oil. Thick, blue oil treatment and it'll help keep the seals and rings lubricated. I've ALWAYS used it, since I bought the Jeep with 112k miles on it. I've now got 252k miles and never had an engine issue. Always ran smoothly!

    😭Back again... Turned out, my #6 and #4 misfire codes was not fixed by replacing my Coil Pack, Spark Plugs, and Wires. Took it back to my mechanics several times. Weren't able to fix the problem. Jeep told me a couple of months ago it was my catalytic converter. My mechanics also told me that. I replaced the cat. Took it to Jeep in State College, Pennsylvania (I live in Chicago) after it didn't want to start. One of the worst Jeep dealerships in the US. 🤬They said one of my sparkplug wires was "loose". Took it in for in-depth diagnostic. Said my Coil, plugs, wires, air intake, and everything on that long list of possible issues in the 6 & 4, passed - except they "thought" it "may" be the Fuel Injectors.
    But at least I have new spark plugs, thanks to your video. I'll look for a video on that 6/4 ordeal. I've seen so many and none fix the problem. 🤬😭

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      With 6 and 4 being the same side, it could be a catalytic converter not allowing exhaust to pass thru freely. If it's clogged, it will hold those gasses and not give you the fresh air required to detonate the fuel on that side. Makes sense to me. But at least you have all of the tune-up stuff done and you know you're good for another 70k miles or so!!!
      If you've gotta replace the cat anyways, you can always pull the cat off and see how clogged it might be. Those are easy to pull off, actually. They'll drop down at the y-pipe right under the transmission. Shouldn't be too hard of a job to pull em down.
      Damn, we were hoping it was gonna be easier, too!!! LOL! As long as you're getting spark from those cylinders, the detonation will be off with a clogged converter. Usually it will say P0300 if a converter is clogged and the ECU is throwing misfires all over the place. But you've got two cylinders throwing it (0304 and 0306), so that's just as good as a random P0300, in my opinion.

    • @howardbeach8701
      @howardbeach8701 2 роки тому +1

      @@MicDropBBQ Guess I should have said that I had the Catalytic Converter replaced during those 6 & 4 cylinder misfire months. After the same engine codes kept popping up, that's when I did the coil pack plugs & wires. After I posted that last post above, my local mechanic discovered coolant after he pulled out the 6 & 4 plug. It turned out to be my Head Gasket having a leak. UGH!!!!!!!! I've been researching on Internet, bought some K-Seal today. Haven't put it in. Spoke to 3 mechanics and they all are trying to sell me an engine! Keep saying I cannot "fix" a Head Gasket, which we all know is BS. And I'm about to post my conversation with Jeep Customer Care. The Jeep Wrangler is known for Head Gasket problems and they're common, even in lower mileage. Crazy. The stealerships in Illinois are so crooked. You take in your car for one thing, and they tell you that you have to have 10 other things done, before they can even "look" at the problem you took it in for. Which is a SCAM. I once went to Jeep stealership parts dept for some 2 inch "foam" that wore away, under my edges/seals of my hard top, where it clamps down in the front by windshield. There's 4 little pieces of foam that help to seal the air from coming in and making a loud noise. Jeep's parts dept insisted I HAD TO buy the entire "door-jam"! Can you imagine? The idiot even printed out the part with an image of the entire door-jam. I'm so fed up and angry. I hate people so much. Thanks for the info anyway. 😭😭😭

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  2 роки тому

      @@howardbeach8701 Damn!! And the kicker is that I have done head gaskets on Chevy engines and Honda engines both. Not a hard process at all. A Jeep head gasket should be cake with the way its laid out. Not a lot to get to the head, honestly. The cams would have to be set, but that's like changing rocker arms. Kinda simple.
      The job is tedious but not complex at all for a Jeep. The sell engines, but you may be looking at the same head gasket issue if that engine had a warped head...and you're back at square one.
      Wish I was closer, broth! Head gaskets are a challenge, but it's just about time. The process flows once you get the timing assembly taken apart. The lower intake and valve covers take no time at all. Replace all gaskets, even if the old ones feel ok.
      Man, if you cruised with it, you could do it in 3 easy days of light work. Not even more than 3-4hrs each day. I did a Chevy S10 in 2 days, and that was completely fried due to overheating. Did a Tundra and that was the worst head gasket job ever! Took me days to get to the heads. Days!!! A Jeep would be like 4hrs and you're there, with all parts lined up on the counter.
      Get the head bolt specs and that's the only part that had to be torqued to specs...and maybe the rocker arm bolts. Other than that, everything is loc-tite and torque firmly with maybe a 1/8th turn bump.

And then my son dropped the Coil Pack and it broke (story of my life). Had to go get another one. By the time I got back from getting both, Jeep was too hot to touch spark plugs.
      I'm going to study for my LSAT for the next 5 hrs, then paint. Tomorrow's a new day, right? Fingers crossed!

      @@howardbeach8701 Good luck on the LSAT! I took in Nevada (Las Vegas) in 2010 and actually got accepted into a few law schools - but they were too far from Vegas to just UP and MOVE across the country. I didn't get into the UNLV (William Boyd) law school, as they only took the top 150 scores in the state - and 3,000 of us took it that year. I guess I was probably #151. LOL! I wish! LOL! More like #1,501. LOL!
      But yeah, you need a couple of extensions to really get some good leverage - but if the actual wrench is too short, you can always place a pipe around the handle to get more leverage. I used a jack-pipe once, as it slid right over the handle. Couple of pounds of pressure and voila! Turned it just enough to crack the threads enough to work em out with just the socket wrench.
      I know about dropping stuff! LOL! I've done that before, thinking I was holding it - turned around, bumped my arm and OOOOOOPS! Right on the floor. It happens. LOL! But you're so right: tomorrow is a new day and you already know what you're facing.
      And always look into getting a long-handle breaker-bar socket wrench in the future. I've got like 3 of them, at least 18" or so. They come in handy when ya least expect it, especially on exhaust bolts that need a little extra torque.

    • @howardbeach8701
      @howardbeach8701 2 роки тому +1

      Got it all done in about 3 hrs total, start to finish, including the time I stopped to get water/gatorade, mark my wires etc. I bought a 12 3/8" power torque (breaker-bar) and 2, 4, 6 were so difficult to get loose. Took long over 1 hr just to get those 3 loose. The bar enabled my son to get the leverage he needed to be able to turn it. Then he used the Ratchet to remove them once they were loosened. 1, 3, and 5 was easy-peazy, but hard to get to, just as you warned.
      All were "dry", no lubricant, so I could tell the mechanics did not use "Anti-Seize" when they put them in. Thanks for that Tip and I encourage people to use it! They're a pain in the butt to remove when they're put in without lubricant. We used the other lubricant you mentioned in your video, just as you demonstrated.
      Since this was my first time, I took precaution and used blue Painter's Tape to mark my wires. Changing the Coil Pack (I had a 4 code with the P0306) was easy! It took about 5 minutes to change.
      Hey, thanks Pal! Thanks for the video and the Tips! My Rubicon started great and ran great after we finished! It shows there's still some good in the world and there are people willing to help out others in need. I'm going to get an 18" breaker-bar socket wrench to have for next time. This 12" was still a little short and we had to keep changing position because we did not have room to turn it. An 18" would have cut our time down and given us easier access to 2, 4, and 6.
      Take care Friend! All the best to you!

    Great freakin video!! About to do those this weekend. Got a misfire on number 2. It doesn’t ride rough and everything seems fine but to be safe I’m replacing my spark plugs and coil pack. Thanks for the video! Seems a lot easier than what I thought it was going to be. 🤙🏻❤️only question… what brand or which spark plugs are the best? I seek you’re using the NGK, are those better than the Bosch or autolite?

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      I use NGK even in the motorcycles. They just seem to last longer. The iridium plugs are what I end up getting. I've seen some split fire plugs and I've seen some that are 4-prong tips, as well. I've gone with the single-tip, as seen in my video, just for cost. They run around $7/each and they last a long time.
      Good luck and thanks for watching the video! Make sure you don't overtighten the plugs when re-installing them. Takes about 30ft lbs of torque, which is literally just snug plus a good 1/8th turn. I was talking to a guy about it last night and went to take a look. I've always snugged mine up and didnt crank down on it, but wanted to be sure that anyone trying it would know that you don't have to super-duper tighten them in there. Just snug with some anti-seize and lock it down nicely. Voila!!!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      ...oh, and Bosch or Autolite are not bad plugs at all. I've used them both before in other vehicles. It's usually all about how you maintain the engine, making sure you don't leave the plugs in too long - or that diode/tip will break off if it gets too thin. With Autolite, I've used those in my V8 Escalade and they've looked pretty good when taking them out. They didn't crack and they still had a little life left when I pulled them. I can't say anything bad about em.

But to know that you're even take a step to DO the maintenance: that's huge, to me! I am proud to see you believe in yourself enough to work on your rig, right there at home!
      Upgrading the coil is super-easy, well. Just pull the wires for 1-3-5 and insert them immediately into the new coil as you pull them. 2-4-6 is easy, as you don't have to trace the wire around the motor. It's all right there to see.
      Adding that radiator was the best thing you could have done, tho. I see so many overheating posts in the Jeep forums, and that's what kills the compression and warps these engines. Too much overheating and they'll be getting loss horsepower and worse gas mileage. Keeping it cool is gonna have that engine lasting forever! I’ve replaced my whole braking system(Calipers, lines, rotors, pads) my radiator was leaking bad and so I did that with new hoses, new battery, plus I have lights and a winch I did myself, new temp thermostat and sensor, exhaust as well plus more interior stuff. Haha I see a lot of overheating too!!! I’ve never had that happen because I try to maintain my coolant levels and with the mishimoto radiator that has a 3 flow, helps more coolant flow. I’ll definitely follow your guide and tips by changing them out quickly. I've owned my Jeep for a few years now, but still know nothing about it. Now that she is paid off (woot!) I kind of what to know more about how to do things. I installed my own steps/rock sliders... and that's about it!
    Spark plugs just came in the mail, i have a code on my 6th plug, so I am going to get the boot grease and anti-sieze tonight and try this video out.
    my 2010 Jeep Wrangler is a manual, and she has a bit of a squeak when I press the clutch. I was told to get some lubricant and spray it on, but I cannot figure out for the life of me where to spray it. I look like an idiot sitting under my Jeep sometimes looking stuff up! Do you have anything on that?
    As a noob, thank you for this video!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  Рік тому +1

      Very welcome and I'm glad you're taking a shot at the Jeep work!! The squeak is the where the clutch pedal presses the rod into the throwout bearing. It's normal. It's literally clean/dry and that causes the squeak. Annoying but not problematic. If you look at my transmission/clutch video, you can see where it is. You can shoot some WD40 or PB Blaster in there and it may stop squeaking. Small hole on the driver side of the transmission, just at the base of the bell housing. It has a plastic case over it, and two 8mm bolts (or 10mm..Can't remember) Super easy to see and to get to, tho.
      For your cylinder 6 issue, I could be the plug, the wire, or the ignition coil. Any of those 3 would cause a code. You can check for spark. Look at my ignition coil video and I think o show how to check if that coil is even producing spark. If it's not, it's a $35-45 part and easy to swap out. But could be wires, so buy a box of new wires too! I always damage a wire or two, so I've got tons of new wires. Hahaha!
      And always keep a spare serpentine belt in the Jeep in case the old one snaps or whatever. That one belt keeps everything going, so throw a $30 belt in the trunk and never stress over it snapping. You'll have a replacement!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  Рік тому

      You can if you want to. However you do your plugs is based on how you feel comfortable. I even have a supercharger on mine, and it wasn't designed for it. I built it all. Routing wires means you need the correct length, of course. And anytime a wire arcs, you run the risk of it arcing to anything metal, so clear anything related to fuel. The spark will look for a ground, and don't let it be a fuel line it finds! 😂🤣😅
      If you route across the top, you will also have to remove the wires if you do any work up there. That runs the risk of breaking the wire end. Have two sets of whatever wires you choose because it will happen when you least expect it.
      Your engine. Your rules...within reason!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  3 роки тому +2

      Torqueing them doesn't hurt, so not you can if it makes you feel better. Using a torque wrench helps prevent over-tightening to the point of stripping, while safely locking it in place. Or - like me - you kinda feel that your plans are snug enough and you back off a little. If you don't, you can strip em.
      Nothing has to be SUPER tight to the ability of my strength. I bench over 300lbs and can curl around 75 with one arm. No need for my full power for plugs. I'd snap one or strip it clear our of the hole! Lol!
      I've put over 100k miles of driving on my Jeep in 17 months, and they've been secure enough to hold without using a torque wrench. That's true for everything I've done to my Jeep without using a torque wrench; the Jeep hasn't failed me in over 100k miles, so not sure when non-torqueing is supposed to cause the issue. Lol!
      Maybe at 200,000 miles of driving, but by that time, I'll definitely have new plugs installed!

      With how easily accessible they are, you can always pull a boot in a month or two and check for security if it makes you feel better about it. Your Jeep. Your rules!!!! Enjoy that machine, brotha! That's why we have em!!!

      Hopefully you actually have all of the plugs in all the way. If you didn't seat the plugs property, air from the cylinder can get past a spark plug. Were any of the plugs really hard to install, like super tight to thread back in? If so, that's possible cross-threading. I always seat my plugs by turning by hand, then tighten once I can't turn that much. This prevents cross-threading.
      But if you didn't cross-thread them, then maybe one is just not seated all the way in. That could be it.

    • @MicDropBBQ

      Depends on the engine specs, as the block is aluminum and the threads can be stripped. I usually snug them up without cramming them on there with all my force. I know how strong I am, so when I feel around 20-25ft lbs of force - which is like lifting a 45lbs weight, just about - then I snug it a little past that...like a slight bump.
      I never crank down on it because it's not necessary to do it like that. Just imagine picking up a 45lb dumbbell and that's about as much pressure as you wanna tighten it down as. It's not a lot, at all.
