    Good discussion. I still have hard time understanding who defines what are constant and un-changed principles of Islam? What are variables that must change with time? Is there a central authority who decides what are variables and constants in Islam? Whose interpretation of Qur'an is accurate? Or Is it open to an interpretation? If Quran is a word of Allah, why Quran has 7th century references appropriate to the Arabic society of that era, and not the principles that would stand course of time and that are omnipresent? Why God is fearful of being questioned by humans who are God's creation? If God wanted to spread the message of righteousness to humans, why God would need a mediator (Muhammad PBUH, Jesus PBUH, Moses PBUH)? I'm trying to understand these questions.

    • @SAli-yb9us
      @SAli-yb9us 2 роки тому +2

      Many questions here. Your beliefs in the final analysis are between you and God so you use your intellect and conscience to decide what are constant and unchanged principles of Islam. For example Justice, compassion, charity, peace are unchanging principles but how these principles are implemented and practiced changes over time and culture. The important goal is to follow the spirit and intent of the Quran which is the Guide.
      There is no central authority because there is no priesthood in Islam. You may consult as many scholars as you like but you decide with your conscience because none of the scholars will bear the consequences of your mistakes.
      Your interpretation of Quran is right for you provided you do your due diligence. You are accountable to God for matters of spirituality no one else. And you are accountable to society for breaking the laws of your land. Where a country’s laws are unjust or the State tries to play God and judge your spirituality then it is up to the people to challenge and change those laws. Yes Quran is always open to interpretation as humans can only do the best they can with the information available to them at any given time. The final judgement belongs to God alone and God knows best.
      The reason the Quran is in 7th century Arabic is because it was revealed in Arabia in the 7th century. If it used the language of the 21st century with references to 21st century society how would the people have understood the message? Any book of guidance has to be catered to the immediate audience in mind. That doesn’t mean the principles cannot be extrapolated to all times as I outlined in response to your first question.
      God is not afraid of being questioned, human beings are afraid of being questioned. Umme Salamah, a wife of the Prophet questioned him as to why God only addressed men if the Quran was for humanity. And the response came from God with verses addressing believing men and believing women thus implying that whatever applies to men also applies to women unless specified.
      Why does God need Messengers? Because humans have a habit of making a mess of their society and we need reformers to remind us about our principles, our values and the Divine.
      Just my two cents - hope these help❤️

    I agree with most of what Mustafa says here, although when he says we should be able to distinguish between what's religious and historical and mentions the example of women. Now there are verses in the quran which no matter the context are deemed controversial. Now muslims do believe the Quran to be the fundamental truth. Some ideas that at this point in time are considered controversial are not originated from the quran but did continue to be the norm thru the Quran for instance slavery/sex slavery. I am more of an agnostic and see all religious history as fighting for the throne between tribes. It's our admittance towards these controversial ideas that will bring us into modernity. Great discussion btw you are doing an awesome job!

    Shehzad I understand where you're coming from but there is a big misconception at large about Shias and who they look to as the center of authority and power. I advise anyone and everyone who doesn't know to not look at 🇮🇷 (Iran) as the example of who Shias follow. What happens there is nothing but pageantry (even the progressive Persians folk don't follow him). The reality of the situation is that "Yes" for guidance when it comes to matters of Jurisprudence there are the "Big Four" in Najaf, 🇮🇶. But they are not who we follow do or die which is exactly why in 🇮🇶 it's not necessarily full on theocracy per se cause you still have Irbil. But more importantly without a doubt the center of power and authority that Shias recognize is the 12th Imam in Ahlulbayt (The grandson of prophet of Islam, twelve generations apart) for us. Almost all religious Shia scholars acknowledge that the 12th Imam is exalted among them. Which is why amongst at least young progressive Shias you will find a conflict of thought when you pose the question "what Marja' do you follow", chances are they won't have an answer and it's not out of arrogance it's just the reality of the situation they are faced with.

    Excellent discussion. Wanted to add that justice by itself is not enough it has to be tempered with compassion and forgiveness which the Quran exhorts us to. An eye for an eye is just, but we must also look at the circumstances and intent and capacity for remorse and atonement before making a pronouncement. Practically every Surah of the Quran begins with God’s attributes of Rahman and Raheem (Mercy and Compassion) but we forget to incorporate it into our practice.

      @Modič I don't see any argument against the science of Hadith here. Do share some concrete evidence before disregarding something that is equally regarded accurate and exceptional by Muslims and non-Muslims

      @Modič You can have a version of religion and I can have my version. Unless we can convince majority muslims to accept our version, its meaningless argument. Majority Sunnis believe in hadith so thats integral part of the religion.
