    Let's have some fun with static electricity! Simple experiments illustrating the fact that opposite charges attract and like charges repel.

      If anyone has a sense of history and they look at the publication date, they will ask "Why did they hold this during the middle of a pandemic?" The obvious answer - that it was held before the pandemic - won't be obvious to some. So, you post the clarifying comment to avoid needing to do something like this...

    Electricity doesn't pick the easier way. Instead the least resistance draws the highest current. And the purpose of ground is to draw high current so the circuit breaker kicks in when the safety of conductive casing is compromised.

  • @jakkuwolfinsomnia8058
    @jakkuwolfinsomnia8058 10 місяців тому

    How come the plastic pieces still repelled each other after putting the nail between them? The nail is a conductor and so are you so how come they didn’t lose their negative charge when you did that? Was the current too slow to discharge the static electricity?

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  10 місяців тому

      The nail is a conductor, but the plastic isn't. Touching the nail to the plastic doesn't allow for the bulk of the charge to move to ground. If a charge happens to be somewhere other than where the nail is touching, it's difficult for it to move through the plastic to get to the nail. So, the plastic remains charged, even when the nail is placed between them.

      In space? Like, in vacuum? Well, for starters, with the same tools, it would be a very quick presentation as the presenter would quickly die. And, the Van de Graaff wouldn't do nearly as much as it depends on the resistivity of the air to allow charges to collect on its dome.

    At 3:05 when you swipped on the plastic , did you become positively charged ?
    4:30 if you are positively charged , why don't the plastic become neutral , once you have been connected to the plastic? Normally the plastic should have become neutrale , since the electron can come back to you through the nail ?

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  3 роки тому +1

      1) Probably a bit. His shoes insulate some, so he was probably slightly positively charged.
      2) The charges on the plastic really can't move around all that well. The charges can't 'walk' along the plastic to get to the nail. You'll neutralize the parts of the plastic that are in direct contact with the nail, but the parts that are further away will retain their charge.

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  Рік тому +1

      I assume it's because the microphone is behaving like a boat in the ocean. While a boat rises and falls with the tide, internally, though, nothing changes. So, if the microphone's ground is allowed to float, it doesn't matter if the surrounding 'ocean' is at a high tide or a low tide. Internally, a five volt drop is still a five volt drop.

      @JeffersonLab  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah. There were some issues with the original footage that prevented us from using it for this. And it's also kind of a pain to record these things (lots of permission slips/release forms that we don't typically need to deal with, etc...). So... yeah. 10 years. Still a better pace than what they did with Star Wars. We have less CGI, though. Maybe we'll add some background creatures if we ever release a Special Edition.
