EASY 1 coat paint technique - BUILDING A CUSTOM BASE - Vintage Dresser Makeover
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- This dark, heavy, boxy vintage dresser needed a BIG TIME makeover and she got one! This was my first time building a custom base for a piece with Kreg Jig for pocket holes (similar to what many other youtubers are doing). It was a little more of a struggle than I anticipated, though I expect it would be easier with a proper mitre saw or table saw.
Using Fusion Mineral paint as a glaze, I'm applying only one coat which allows the woodgrain to peek through the paint. I can't possibly be the only one to have discovered this ability with a select few of Fusion's colours, but I haven't seen anyone else do it, so I thought I would share my process with you.
This technique was actually discovered by accident a few months back when I did a similar dresser, and wanted to apply a custom mixed teal. Both Renfrew Blue and Coal Black by Fusion are slightly transparent so I put on the first coat, fully expecting to need two or three coats for full coverage. But to my surprise, I LOVED the look of the single coat- it was behaving like a glaze or semi-transparent coloured stain, and thus, a new technique was born!
This look won't appeal to everyone, but I think it's unique and beautiful and I can still see a bit of the woodgrain through the paint, so I love that part of it as well! Hope you enjoy!

Don't worry about what people think so much. This is your channel, you are the artist and you are running the SHOW!!!
Thank you very much!
I just found you. It is so refreshing to see a woman with competence in woodworking and refinishing! Yay! Thank you!!
😮Wow.... girl you need a table saw, a shop to put it in, and all the trimmings! You are a master carpenter! Gorgeous! You made using that jig look like a Sunday walk in the park. Thumbs up 👍🏻.
Bravissimo 👏👏 I am a design consultant for a high end furniture store and we do 90% Uber custom occasional pieces. You’re bringing to life exactly what the savvy customer is looking for!🎉👏
Beautifully done.
You know you’ve reached a level of awesomeness when your own stuff is your inspo ❤️💕☺️
Thanks so much for watching!
Absolutely stunning! You've done oak sooooo right. The only quality I like about oak is that it's super solid, making for sturdy furniture.
FYI, ALWAYS use a dust mask, and do any sanding you have to on oak outside or in a well ventilated area. This is especially so with red oak.
I'm a cancer survivor (head cancer), and was a case study for Emory Winship Cancer Institute. Being a hardcore woodworker, as well as a Jill-of-all-trades (forget Jack), I lazily chose too many times to not take all precautions with toxins and dust. Studies show that the toxins in oak wood is very caustic, red oak more than white oak. Because of my age at the time of diagnosis, 44, I was the only female known to have such a rare and unique cancer, with traces of multiple myeloma. The tumor developed in one of my maxillary sinus cavities, showing that the culprit was inhaled.
Please take care of yourself, cause the world needs your videos and works of art!
Sorry to hear about what happened to you. TY 4 sharing & caring to warn others 💞 I hope all the best for you.
Sending love and light
Hi Angela. I am interested in speaking with you about your diagnosis. I have a sinus injury. Been off work since May 2020. I worked at a call centre. Too much strong perfume scented laundry detergent smell burned my sinuses. I saw an allergist in February of 2020, and after testing he said I don't have any allergies. Then asked he asked me if I was involved in a chemical spill. I said, " no," he said, "are you sure". I said, "yes". It's didn't really sink in, (with me) what he was actually saying until months later. I have lots of headaches, slightest thing like even burnt toast. I was wearing a mask before everyone else was, charcoal filter, due to scent issue. I am very limited with going anywhere. Been on a waiting list to see specialist, since June of 2020. I take lots of natural supplements to help with healing, etc. I have researched the chemicals in laundry detergent, and the different sinuses in our head, and how it can cause pain in parts of our body. I would really appreciate any information that you may be able to provide. Thank you.
This story is so sad 😿 I'm so sorry that happened to you, glad you are a survivor ❤️. It's sad you got that doing what you love.
Wow. That is quite the story. I’m glad you’re OK and sharing your experience will be very helpful to many people I’m sure.
I was prepared to tell you "I hate the hardware" but....once finished, the whole piece looks incredible. Your taste and skill level is reaching excellence. Really well done!
Lol same! I'm so glad it looks so amazing!!!
Thank you! Yeah, I could have drilled new holes and changed it, but I like the melding of the vintage look of the hardware and the more modern style base. It’s an interesting juxtaposition , at least to me. I know some folks will hate it. Haha but that’s true of pretty much anything :-)
And keeping them kept the costs down given the new oak base.
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I agree, that was my thought as you shared the finished dresser. Your talent and skill shine through in every one of your pieces! I always look forward to your new videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge-I love your melodic voice and gentle touch on your works of art.
Giving them the gold tone update really helped as it married with the paint colour. I love the handles!!
What a magnificent transition. Most people would pass the original piece by as "junk". You have taken a rather common piece to a whole different level of beauty!
I'm glad I'm not the only person who saves pieces off the curb!
I'm amazed at your work. You take pieces that I wouldn't look at twice and make magic with them. So far it hasn't been one single piece that I didn't think could look very nicely in my living space. And the quality of your work. It's absolutely excellent. You are an artist.. thank you for sharing 😁
The custom base transforms the piece from functional furniture to a fashionably fantastic piece of art. Well done Angie!
I agree, it really balances the piece.
The paint "wash" creates subtle variations that add to the unique look! She's a beauty! You did so much work!
That's exactly why i don't like it look like someone tried to paint it. Natural look for me, or burnt 🤷
Who knew that beautiful piece of furniture was just waiting to be discovered? Your work is incredible and this project speaks for itself . So beautiful and elegant! Amazing job! 👏🥰
Beautiful! I believe the custom base you have seen all over UA-cam actually is DIY WIFE's
This is great…I have an old, funky 70’s dresser..but it’s solid white pine, no veneers. You’ve inspired me to give some new life to the old girl. I bought it from the Salvation Army store 15 years ago…lol! It lived through 2 boys and now will get a facelift. 😎
So many things to be amazed by with this one, Angie. For starters, you took Renfrew Blue and turned it into a dark olivey green (huh?) Then that "wash- but more than a wash" technique with a 3 in 1- is just terrific! Lastly that base was exactly what it needed. As usual your instruction is clear and concise. You knocked this out of the ballpark, my girl!
You are such an artist! Love how you give these pieces new life. I don’t do refinishing, but I find your restorations mesmerizing!
VERY well done! My father was a woodworker, so I've grown up around it and do some woodworking myself. You've actually inspired me to do more furniture recycling/refinishing. Keep up the great work!
Beautiful piece of furniture you created out of old outdated furniture that most people would not give a second look at. Excellent job!
You have done a beautiful refinish and narrative! I’m 83 years old and have done a bit through the years, too. I appreciate your skills and artistry. And love the Kitty!
This is GORGEOUS! Makes me think how these could be made into beautiful kitchen islands!
You have a great sense of creativity when it comes to deciding on when to paint or stain. This is gorgeous. Well done
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks. I just subscribed today. Your vision completely blows my mind. I think you're brilliant in the way you reimagine these pieces.
Beautiful! Your choices were right on. I didn't care for the color or hardware but when it was completed it looked beautiful and classy! Amazing job! Perfection!
Wow and such an eyecatcher! What a color! The "green-washed" look of it letting the grain show through is so lovely and I love the addition of the base.
This is an AMAZING flip.. Came out GORGEOUS!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I’ve seen 70s furniture makeovers like this before-and they didn’t turn out so well-but you NAILED this one! I’d pay top dollar for that piece with no hesitation. Beautiful job! You also have a new subscriber. Watching these types of videos are SO relaxing for me. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching more!😊❤️👍🏼
You have done a beautiful restoration. I'm thinking of all the old pieces I've discarded through the years because I didn't have a clue of how to repair them.
Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Adding the legs can change the whole piece. When we redid our bathroom I was able to reuse the sink cabinet by using legs from old bunk beds. Love to recycle old parts. I had a mirror from an old destroyed dresser. Painted to match and saved a bunch of money!
You are a true artist and every video continues to show how truly talented your are. I am in my mid 50s and widow of 16 years and have been struggling with depression. I found myself on your channel and have been binge watching and find that I have some furniture I was goung to throw out and replace but I am now excited to try and save then, in a very armature way, but I have to start someplace. My husband was a woodworker and drilled safety of machinery and safety of usibg chemicals, no pun intended. Your channel, somehow was what I needed to find something I can do and get motivated about and get out of my funk. Thank you so much for posting your videos and educating along the way.
You're so incredibly welcome! I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of that and I'm genuinely thrilled my videos have given you some ideas and inspiration. All the best with your pieces - you've got this!!
This piece turned out gorgeous, I love the color, base, pulls. Absolutely beautiful, outstanding job.
i have the same dresser and love what you did to make it look amazing.
We have the same one too!! What a wonderful video !!
Phenomenal!! I actually have a dresser that is similar in size, oak grain and vintage, right down to the hardware. I now know there is a very cool option for refinishing it. Thanks!
Oh wow😍, does not look like the dresser... So elegant and rich and the hard wear gives it that lift of luxury .. I love it, everything about it... Beautiful 🥰❤️
Oh em gee! That is unexpectedly gorgeous!!! I don[t think I would have been so happy with it without the added bottom piece. It really made all the difference in the world. You know what? I never noticed the legs were a different oak/finish. You really have an eye for this work! And thank you for all your little tips! You're the best!
Hi Angie. Everything you've done with this dresser looks amazing. I too am not a big fan of oak, but with this technique, you really do need the wood grain. I love how the wood grain peaks through the paint. I just did a nine drawer dresser a couple weeks ago and made the same oak base. I'm in Ontario and it cost me a little over $110.00 with tax. With wood costing so much right now, it's a huge cost, but I think it's well worth it. My husband is from New Brunswick and we both love it down in the East coast. You're luck to live where you do. Always look so forward to your video's coming out. I feel you are one of the most talented furniture artist on You tube. Thanks for another great video. Have an awesome rest of your day. 🖌
Absolutely beautiful! The base is perfect ! I love the wash !!!!!!!!!!
I couldn’t imagine how making a base for this was going to make it look less dated but you absolutely pulled it off. And I agree I don’t love to work with oak either. It always seems stated to me. But I love love love this piece
I have been watching DIY's because I want to try my hand at some pieces that were my grandmothers. Of all I have watched this is the most beautiful make over. I loved it.
$20 garage sales find glows up to $500 resale shop find. Looks awesome. I love it. Nice work.
You hit this out of the park Angie! Love love it!! Stellar 💕✨🇨🇦
Wow! Absolutely phenomenal. I'm not so crazy about the base but truly a masterpiece. Thank you
You’re truly extraordinary. You certainly have an eye for detail. I’m a fairly ‘new’ watcher of furniture refinishing videos and imho you have that extra something-that TLC for the pieces you work on-that would/should make you stand out. Your finished products are absolutely beautiful. And thank you so much for your full explanations of the process. Very inspirational. ✌🏻
Great job of explaining what she is doing while the video highlights her explanation. She has a great eye for color and does a great job adding unique touches like the base legs! wonderful to watch-well executed.
Wow!!!! You were absolutely correct by putting that bass at the bottom. I don’t think this video is too long at all I love the detail you go into. You’re actually building up my courage. Please stay safe and God bless you and yours.♥️🌹🇺🇸
What a change, has to be a favorite piece of furniture, for anyone that sees it. Beautiful and alot of work for you. Smart lady, you are.
Gorgeous! You are a brave visionary with so much talent. This piece is exquisite. You’re the best of the best, so many thanks for your inspirations and teaching.
AAAA+, Angie! I see dressers exactly like this on FB Marketplace all the time and I could never re-envision them- now, I can, thanks to you! You get a great job in the base, too. Girl, you need a miter saw and a table saw! It’s time!!
And a chop saw
When I first saw the dresser, I about died! It seriously looks exactly like the dresser my mom had when I was a kid. She had it in her bedroom in the 70's, and she had a fiber optic lamp on top of it. I don't know whatever happened to it. She lost a lot of furniture because she ended up in the hospital for over a year. I'm sure someone just donated our furniture to charity. Anyway, the dresser in its original design brought back some forgotten memories. 🙂
Visionary combo, oh the Oak, Hardware and colour choice! Whats not to love, a statement piece truely holding her own. Awesome work.
Thank you kindly!
Drop dead gorgeous! This piece is so beautiful. You do outstanding work. I'm so glad you have a love for restoring or saving as much of the original as possible. I love, love this piece.
For your first platform with legs you nailed it Angie! Great job and I love the glaze effect!❤️❤️
Absolutely beautiful. Such style
Absolutely gorgeous !!! You really made it a keeper!!♥️♥️♥️
Excellent work !
Your communication of how you do your craft is very accurate .
You have the Gift .
I'm a GC Builder just relaxing . I learned a lot.
Thank you
Man I wish I'd have found your channel years ago! Not only would it have made my life a lot easier but my pockets would have been a little heavier as well...
I just happened upon your channel and so happy I did. I’m blown away by this piece and your attention to detail while explaining. Beautiful!
Thank you for the inspiration. I have a dresser almost identical to this and was thinking of painting it a dark green/black and stripping the top - restaining it a nice mid-toned wood colour. I've been thinking of painting the hardware bronze with a copper highlight and what you've done with yours has helped to solidify that idea for me...thanks again.
The wood tone on the top replicated on the bottom really made this piece look balanced. And the gold on the handles totally pulled the whole look together. The dresser looks so polished and elegant.
Absolutely queenly! Love the gold hardware!!
You definitely transformed that clunky dresser into a phenomenal piece of furniture!
Wow. You absolutely knocked this one out of the park. The transparency through the color exposing the wood grain is such an innovated technique. Love the base and color contrast. Awesome work.
That was an incredible, very interesting transformation! Very explanatory, awesome job!
Angie you did a beautiful job. The base looks great.
Oh my gosh! That’s my dresser! I have a chest and a queen sized bed that match! I got them in 1986 or so, and have used them since. I’ve been wanting to update them for a long time, but they’re too well made to just throw out. You’re an excellent teacher with great ideas. Thank you for sharing your talents, now maybe I’ll have the courage to change my furniture. 😉
Yay! I'm so glad I could give you some ideas! Thanks so much for watching Vicki and best of luck with your projects!
Out-freakin-standing. Really well done. I hated those furniture pieces in the 70s-80s but this is something entirely different.
Gorgeous! I would love to see this in a grey wash look!
I'm at the start of dipping my toe into this expression of art with you being my absolute favorite inspiration. With the exception of trying to figure out the maths of that solid foundation you custom built, your work tugs at my motivator button. My 1950 ish bankers desk was tortured in storage for five years so he needed a redo. You nudged me.
Hey, thank you for your videos. I enjoy learning from you.
That is absolutely gorgeous! I love the contrast between the stained wood and paint and still being able to see the beautiful wood grain instead of it concealed beneath layers of paint. You inspired me to want this done with my oak bedroom furniture, possibly some other oak furniture I have in my house. You did an amazing job. You projects definitely transcend to the next level.
Beautiful! Love that paint color with that woodgrain of the oak and the legs make it somehow grander! Thank you. Love 20 - 30 minutes videos.
At first I didn’t like the contrast but it grew on me. I love it.
I loved the whole process and……it’s absolutely gorgeous 😁
We've got the same exact bedroom set as this! Amazing what you've done with it! Very inspirational!
Stunning
Angie I just love the way this piece came out. That glazing is just beautiful
That base makes it look more elegant. Great job.
My mother had a set very similar to this. Never did I think anything could make it look appealing. But you did in spades. Bravo.
Way to go for evolving and incorporating different skills to create a one of a kind unique piece!
I really like this a lot and a whole bunch too! That shade of green is just beautiful. The jewelry gives it just the right amount of Bling and the soft wood tones make it cozy. Grrreat job! ❤️
P. S. If you had to buy all that jewelry today, it would probably cost more than you have in that whole piece.
Smart move!
Thanks so much for watching!
Amazing! You deserve that table saw and all the tools you need. Your explanation was clear. I really like that the base matches the top. Also the cleaned hardware looks good and if you feel like swapping it out with something contemporary like leather straps, that would be cool too.
Your taste in matching colors and your ideas makes me speachles.
Thank you very much! I'm so glad you like them! 😊
Beautiful! The legs were absolutely worth the extra expense and work. Thank you for sharing your project.
You never disappoint Angie. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I love how you kept the top wood and I love the base that you built. The color is also beautiful. Love your channel ❤️
PS… I’m so glad you kept the hardware. It’s beautiful.
Wow, GORGEOUS! I've never seen this paint technique before. I have a really old oak dresser that this would be perfect on. Thanks for all your videos; you do such great work and it's a joy to watch you and learn!
Boggles my mind how Angie can take a revolting piece of furniture finished in early cheap motel and turn it into something lovely. It’s like watching a magic show!
Thank you very much! 😊
“Early cheap motel”, best description yet!😄
Wow that bottom piece was worth the time and effort. The painted handles go so well. BEAUTIFUL 🤩
Well... you certainly turned the clock back for this lovely old piece...😎
That IS TRULY phenomenal! Thanks for sharing this “transcend” with us Angie!
I love this! I’ve never seen this before and I’m excited to try it. I have two pieces that would look great with this treatment. I love watching your videos. I just learn so much. The base looks great. I can see this in a dining room as a statement piece. Thank you for another inspiring video.🌸
This is my absolute favorite piece that you have ever made. I love dark green. I love the old fashioned hardware. I love the texture of the wood. The only thing missing (for me, I like old looking things) are some of those furniture legs that look like lion paws, haha. Also I love the kitty cat!
LOVE!!!! I just added my first custom bottom to a plain ol tv stand. Stained the bottom and top to match. The person that bough it, while loading it kept rubbing the top and saying its so pretty! Made me feel SO good!!!!
Congratulations Laura!! 😊
Amazing job of recreating a new design out of old furniture.
This is exactly what I needed to see, I have a piece of furniture that needs taller legs but has same base that you are making. Tfs. Excellent job, you definitely brought this piece up to date.
Excellent job! It reminds me of a piece I did back in the 90's. I wanted a piece that I could put plants on so I tiled the top but I love yours better!
This is gorgeous, I love the paint technique. My daughter in law has a piece similar to this, I'm going to see if she will let me recreate this on it. I've done pieces for her previously. Thank you!
never saw you before this..I'm too old now ..81..but I loved refinishing things when I was younger..before UA-cam, of course..but I love thia....very nice job..
The front wood design and hardware is a work of art!
so incredibly lovely. I love the new “lift” so much. In fact, now I realize I have a dresser that in-laws gave us which is so very much like this, with the lovely recessed drawers as well. My gripe with it, would be that it is so low. In fact I am finding standard cupboard height (kitchen and bathrooms) is a couple inches too short as well. Time to elevate our furniture heights :) fantastic job on this. I love it!
That came out exceptionally well! It’s stunning!
I love this piece! The top is beautiful and the base coordinates perfectly. I do one coat with black often. I absolutely love seeing the grain through. I've never thought to use other darker colors in the same manner. I also love the hardware. Beautiful job❣
Love that tip about the drawers. I got a really beautiful mid century dresser for cheap because they said the drawers didn’t close properly. I had a hunch they just had the drawers in the wrong slots and when the seller wasn’t looking I tried moving the drawers to other positions and they fit beautifully. Got it for half of what it should’ve been sold for!
Excellent job, I love the way this piece came out.
