To tithe is also to trust the Lord with your life and your finances. It’s saying, Lord, even though I’m not in the most stable financial situation, even though I’m scared, I’m going to give what I can and trust that you will always provide what I need. It’s not about having it all together first. That’s not trust.

God will bless all who tithe. That may mean an increase in what she makes or maybe others will give her things, but there is always a blessing. I use to think "I can't afford to tithe". Now I know I can't afford NOT to. God's ways are not ours. I think tithing is also a way to strengthen us spiritually. If we tithe even when we don't see how we can and not go hungry, he will bless us for it, therefore we grow in faith.

    • @vigilantezack
      @vigilantezack 10 днів тому

@@garygacek8781 She did give all she had, this is a spiritual lesson, not a practical one. She basically became a beggar, you can't live on nothing at all. So other people have to take care of this woman, probably from the same funds she just dropped in to.
We can't tell her she shouldn't have given, because this was her heart, and it was good.
In modern American culture, which is really what we're dealing with here, we don't all have land and animals and gardens and free food coffers and family and extended family feeding us. A modern widow still has a rent/house payment, utilities, groceries, insurances, healthcare, the list is endless and it all costs money. Can a modern woman give all she has? Perhaps, but then all her stuff goes in default, she gets hit with late payment fees, the power gets shut off.
People say "give until it hurts". Well that's easy, I can just give everything. But then my family doesn't eat, no bills get paid, we have late fees added on top of the bills, hits to the credit agency. Yes it hurts, but is it doing any good for the kingdom?
My point is, we have to adjust for the times we live in. Scripture doesn't say "give till it hurts or else it's not really giving". Instead, it says to be good and wise stewards of what God gives us. The parable of the talents shows this. If I give away what is needed for bills and utilities and payments and food and medical supplies and insurance and such, this is just unwise and mishandling funds. Does God need us to write bad checks for him? Or borrow from Visa at 28.9% so our local church can have more?
The Christian cultural conversation about tithe and offerings is still so filled with confusion, even abuse and bad councel.
"Just give the tithe and God will bless you!"
How? By increasing our money so we can pay the bills? But we just discussed that easily paying the bills doesn't "hurt" enough right? Are we not good givers unless we feel constant anxiety about our finances? That doesn't seem biblical at all.
I'm not arguing with you, just jumping off on a rant!

Tithing is an Old Testament teaching. It is a good example but that teaching was a part of the old law. In the New Testament, you are taught to be generous as you have been prospered. Corinthians 9:7 says that "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." The caller seems to want to give and as long as she gives generously as she has been prospered, she has fulfilled New Testament teaching on giving. New Testament scripture teaches to give generously rather than tithing. For some 10% is not generous as all. For others, giving 10% could cause one to fail to take care of themselves or their family.

I have to disagree with Dave. He said that Deuteronomy says to tithe off of your net income. The word "net" is never used in the Bible in reference to income - not in Deuteronomy or anywhere else in the Bible. The word "net" is used as a trap, a snare or as a fishing net. To tell someone today to tithe off their net is to tithe off of the money they bring home.
Some people have things like social security, payroll taxes, insurance payment, etc., etc. taken out of their check. Some people only bring home half of what they actually made due to all of their deductions. i once knew a man who grossed $600. a week but only brought home about $75. on his paycheck because he had another source of income that he wanted to pay taxes on. So based on Dave's logic you would tell my friend to pay $7.50 tithe off of an income of $600.
Also according to Dave's logic, those people who exclusively live off of social security are exempt from tithing. Wonder what God thinks of that kind of logic?

Tithing is 100% about supporting the church. There’s a reason tithing is specific to donating to the church rather than to any other organization that would have an actual impact. Don’t tithe, donate to nonprofits or literally anything else. But certainly focus on getting into a better financial situation before you start donating money that you need

I would like to hear a comment on a different form of tithing - volunteering. I was expecting Dave to come back with this after pointing out that God does not need money.
The point of tithing is to give in a way that not only spreads the word of God but also to do good for yourself and others.
This does not need to be with the most convenient way possible (handing out cash) but I would easily posit that doing Godly volunteer work is even BETTER than a cash tithe.
    Thoughts ?

I respect Dave Ramsey, but Christians are not under a tithe! Tithing was an Old Testament rule , essentially a tax. At times it was oppressive. I know that Dave mentions how Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek, but that was a one-time gift. The New Testament says that each one should give what he can afford. For some this is only 5%, and that's fine. The important thing for Christians isn't tithing, but practicing generosity, and not only with money, but with time, prayers, and resources.

Let the poor women keep her money or give an offering to the church from her own volition, as described in New Testament. How can you be telling her to follow the practices of Deuteronomy that was given to the Jews of that time. This tithing doctrine of today makes me so sad, because it does not exist in Christ and is a bondage to all those who follow it. Neither does it accurately mimic the tithing in the law, but is completely man made (not that Christians should follow the law either). The tithe given to God by Abram and Jacob was after the fact that God had blessed them abundantly in a particular situation and not before. Even then, it only happened once in their lifetimes and never again. Considering this, why are you asking this poor women to give a tithe with the little that she has. This whole tithe thing has to stop. Give offerings not tithes.

So based on what Dave said with social security a return of our own work investment, it is not an increase and should not be subject to tithing, our tithe should be based on the pension amount.
