Johan Herrenberg, this practice of doubling the trombones at the end of the coda with extra timpani is in at least four recordings with the Concertgebouw I know of: Haitink's first digital recording, Haitink's first recording (analog) from the 60s, Van Beinum's mono recording from the late 50s and Van Beinum's live recording from 1941 (from the COA archives). Since neither Haitink nor Van Beinum were known to tinker with the scores of composers, I suspect that this practice was started by Mengelberg, who was famous for his "changements" to scores (especially Beethoven's). Purists will complain, but I love this effect, which is overwhelming in this magnificent coda.

This is the only performance of Bruckner's Ninth I know where, in the final bars of the 1st movement, the timpani reinforce the rhythm of the lower brass.

I really enjoy this practice...very powerful feel like I need a smoke after that coda! I believe trombones are added as well. There is a little known performance by the Esslingen South German symphony which does this also. In discussions with others about this, it's been suggested that this may have been added by Mengelberg during his tenure at the Concertgebouw.

Aha! A rather Mahlerian touch, that, 'improving' the orchestration!

I think that this is one of Haitink's earlier performances of this work: 1981?
Longer than his first version in 1965 which was less than one hour and when he was "feeling his way" into the work.

you are correct! abrukcner(dot)com, the official organ of propaganda for the Inter-galactic Anton Bruckner Society says that this performance occurred on 12/11/1981. for your knowledgeable comment, they will be sending a t-shirt with a silk-screen image del Maestro Bruckner in his mature years wearing his Franz Joseph medallion and a dumb-founded expression on his face (kind of like Alfred E. Neumann, but without a sense of humour) and beneath his likeness, the slogan 'Half God, half simpleton, half organist, pero 99.44% Compositor genio!'
