I grew up with classical music in the house in the 1950s. I discovered Hummel in the 1960s, listening to KFAC Radio in Los Angeles. I found LPs and played them over and over. This is the consummate Romantic concerto. I will never forget it. At 74, I can still hum along with it.

It must be said that this concerrto is the very best work Hummel ever composed in his entire carreer. Most of his other output doesn't come near to the greatness of this concerto.

The b minor concerto is it's equal in my view. And of its kind the trumpet concerto is practically sui generis. Hummel got rich and famous playing piano. Writing music just didn't pay the way performing did.

It is perhaps a mark of greatness when a composer with whom I studied, who was known for a completely different, highly accessible style of music, said when asked about Sun Treader by Carl Ruggles, "it is truly magnificent!"

There's a movie from 2000 based on K. J. Erben's ballads that were the direct source for Antonín Dvořák's symphonic poems: ua-cam.com/video/JpiAQVwrJhY/v-deo.html. Water Goblin is the first of them, starting at 4:53. The movie, however, doesn't use any of Dvořák's music.

Dvorak wrote four tone poems based on Czech fairy tales. The others are The Wood Dove, The Noon Witch and The Golden Spinning Wheel, and they're all PG or R. But they all have masterly orchestration. Czech folk tales are not alone in containing violence and gore. Check out the originals of Grimm's Fairy Tales before being Disneyfied.

    • @sirkewbic5583

Grimm's Fairy Tales are not that dark, Disney's version of Snow White is way darker about the Evil Queen's death for example.
