Hi opelgtcr8z, thanks for the video. I changed the master cilinder years ago, and found that the 4 plastic ears (2:23) of the complete instrument unit are sensitive for plastic aging. That means that the will break off. Be care full not to overtighten them. My bus: T3, 1980, CU engine, 420.000 km.
Yes, two were already broken. Same issue with our other Vanagon. Had to use big washers. 1980, nice. I have an 81. T2 Engine a bit underpowered but I love it.
Oh man Neil!... I am no longer certain about that. It was made a few months ago. So Sorry, I dont remember the sizes of the sockets and wrenches we used. You definitely need a metric set of both with some long extensions on the ratchet.
bought a 88 and the clutch goes to the floor, came to see what is involved if master is bad... will fill with dot 3/4 and try to find leak, vanagon sat for 10 years
These have a slave cylinder on the transmission. It does a lot of the work too. Start with some fluid but you may need to bleed the slave cylinder as well. Mine has a plastic pressure tube on the transmission that the DOT fluid flows through. Was surprised it was plastic. Might check that too.

Glad it was helpful!
Lucky to have a hands on girl !
Hose on side of brake fluid reservoir feeds clutch master cylinder below behind steering column.
Yeah, I eventually figured that out after I had to change out the slave. Thanks for the tip though.
Great vid guys! Are you able to list the tools you used please? 😊
