Everybody worrying about MOT time, but the big problem is insurance. Drill it, gut it, remove it, whatever, and you have made a modification which renders your vehicle illegal for use on the public highway. That immediately invalidates your insurance - even if you tell your insurance company. You can get a replacement DPF from £200 brand new, and that's a decent one, made in the UK and properly engineered.

Just a point worth mentioning , you are all free to do what you want with your cars however as it is illegal to drive a car with a removed or altered DPF which makes the car technically un roadworthey and should you check your small print in your insurance also makes your car un-insured so if you have a major accident , your fault or not and the car is checked which is the first thing Police and insurance companies look for these days especially undeclared tune maps along with EGR and DPF deletes will invalidate any insurance or claim as any car with an altered or removed DPF or EGR should technically fail an MOT if detected but is legally clasified un roadworthey and not insured and is illegal to drive on a public highway. Roll the dice and take your chance but now you have the facts and as George has fully documented the removal of his DPF which is not illegal but when driving it on the road is commiting an offence should look forward to the blue lights in his rear view mirror very soon .
I appreciate what you’re saying but insurance companies have no idea when it comes to checking if a car has been remapped or whether an exhaust has been gutted… I know lots of people who have had to claim and never ever had an issue
@@GeorgeAusters Like I said it everyones choice however if the vehicle is involved in a serious incident regardless of fault the Police and Insurance company will check for vehicle compliance and have the tools to check and know first hand, should they find an undecalred map or altered emissions system they have the right to reject the claim and the liability for any damage caused and will become your personal liability including any third party damage or claim. I put this out here to ensure you are aware of the implications and just because you know people who have had claims without any issues does not negate the law relating to an accident or serious claim. The insurance compnay will always check if the contract between insurer and individual is correct especially in the event of a large serious claim and is the time you need your insurance. It is now illegal for any MOT tester to pass any DPF that has been tampered with or welded without a satifactory explination and new regs are looking to be introduced to check for empty or altered DPFs. This will mean thousands of cars failing needing replacment DPFs to obtain a vailid MOT. I am not an eco warrior but this is a major issue for the future and you would have been better off cleanning or flushing your DPF and saving you from possible major legal issues for your future and wanted to ensure that anyone following your advise has all the facts and risks to enable a decision which they fully understand the possible consequences.
@@GeorgeAusters The check sum will be different from the original flash so tells you that the map has changed and yes with the correct tools you can see everything so is not invisable, all software leaves change logs and if you completely reflash nothing will match the original OEM check sums so altered software.
Hello George, you basically destroy the filter! in this case you might as well put a tube in there?! here in France it is punishable by refusal at the Technical Inspection or even heavy fines (for endangering public health). For cleaning, all you need is a good scale destroyer and good rinsing with hot water (several times, until the rinsing water is clean). then have the breath (to eliminate as much water as possible). and went back up.

Currently rather active in the Midlands I believe.
As far as I know there is two parts inside that box. Dpf filter + Catalitic converter. Some people prefer to leave Catalitic converter in place and just remove dpf part.
I've heard something like that too and I'm not sure about that on my car (Audi A4 2.0TDI) because the only thing I see is a Catalytic converter right behind the turbo and nothing else, just a straight pipe with a massive muffler at the end (sounds kinda cool for a *stock* diesel. Lol! I remember the good old days of diesel engines before DPF was an obligation on the modern car. All had exhausts pointing to the floor (at least in the UK) as they would spew pm10s and cause health issues in built up areas. The DPF is a royal pain in the arse but unfortunately it is now illegal to remove or modify them to drive on a public road. It is also an automatic MOT failure. Also, due to obligation to declare upon point of sale, resale value of a gutted vehicle will plummet. It is cheap and easy to get them serviced these days with even Halfords doing it for £80. Maybe if you let "something" inside it will absorb some reverberation and it will be more quiet, but i don't know the cons.

You won't have to drill nothing, just replace it with a new part. And you will have the catalyst functionality and better exhaust sound absorbing. I appreciate opinions. Thanks

Could you make a video of how to remove the passengers airbag? Thanks!

DPF faul comes up on the dash, Got diagnosed and found a left split innercooler hose.
Yes a cars regen puts extra unburnt fuel throught the exhaust system to start combustion of soot in the DPF filter.
What sensor is detecting/measuring the particulate /soot load on the DPF? If you have gutted it would the sensor know it’s missing and throw up a check engine light?
Dpf sensor
It measure soot mass and weight

its the exhaustback pressure sensor
@@e60tube90 it’s not measuring back pressure, if there is any back pressure there’s a clog. It measure soot mass weight and Level for regen.

200? How is that?
The cheapest dpf replacement for my Ford is 1800. Ford wants 3k for a the oem part.
a long wood drill bit would have been better because it will break it all up a lot quicker and make the job faster.

Great content, George👍! quick question in regards dpf cleaning,my mechanic said that he will cut the dpf and clean. after weld it back. Is that normal to do?
If he means gutting it then yes

Are you talking about the EGR valve too?
I tried to do the right thing - went into my local garage, who's also my MOT tester, and asked if they had any experience with VW EGR issues. He told me to get it mapped out, and the DPF. I've done so, but now I'm concerned about it becoming blocked because it can no longer regen. If I do this, and then emissions checks change so I have to get another DPF and EGR, I'm going to be rather upset.
It doesn't need to regenerate if it hasn't a dpf a regeneration is only done when a dpf is building up to much soot which needs to be burnt off in the regen process
@@paulgilraine3127 Yeah well it did still have a DPF. It had been mapped out, but was still there gathering soot. It's gone now though.

If your car regenerates when it detects an increase in differential pressure across the DPF, if that never happens due to being filleted surely the ECU will never call for a regeneration, so why would it throw up error codes?
It will throw a fault for not seeing a difference in pressure from inlet to outlet.
Lack of pressure lol

I would be doing it out doors . pressure wash or sit the exhaust in a bucket of detergent get as much soot out as possible. Keep the thing wet with a garden hose as reqd to stop as much nasty stuff getting airborne.

@@GeorgeAusters
Like I said it everyones choice however if the vehicle is involved in a serious incident regardless of fault the Police and Insurance company will check for vehicle compliance and have the tools to check and know first hand, should they find an undecalred map or altered emissions system they have the right to reject the claim and the liability for any damage caused and will become your personal liability including any third party damage or claim.
You can’t see a map? A remap just overwrites the existing map
@@GeorgeAusters
The check sum will be different from the original flash so tells you that the map has changed and yes with the correct tools you can see everything so is not invisable, all software leaves change logs and if you completely reflash nothing will match the original OEM check sums so altered software.
If you have a not-at-fault accident then it doesn’t matter if your insurance is valid or not. The other party’s insurance deals with everything
This is how we roll in the uk 😂

Nope. If your engine is healthy then it will pass the MOT no problem👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters erm, no as garages are now instructed to check if the model car came with a manufacturer fitted DPF and to check if it has been removed or MODIFIED. Depends on the car and how good the tuner is. I turned off EGR on my 1.6 TDI and DPF regen fine
If you don't intend to drive much just get a petrol 👍
I’d much rather have a diesel without a DPF or EGR - No much issues then and your engine will be a lot healthier👍🏻

Hi, How is your car running performing after this...
Your tuner sux then..
George 👍, whatif you just drill a circle the same diameter as the exhaust pipe instead of gutting everithing inside?
I know that in some cases, the empty DPF muffler increses echo and the whistle from turbo (some guys like the sound, but i personnaly don't).
Maybe if you let "something" inside it will absorb some reverberation and it will be more quiet, but i don't know the cons.
If you leave some inside then it'll end up falling apart and then rattling
3 holes of 10mm is enough
The turbo whistle and echoing noise should only happen if you delete your muffler.
I've just took mine off. Didn't completely gut it. I cleaned it with drwim cleaner and jet washed it then drilled 4 x 6 mm holes though. Put it back on. Took it for a spin. Blocked Dpf warning went off after 20 miles of motorway driving and seemed nippier as my Dpf was fully blocked. Only problem now is when take my foot off the revs I can hear the turbo hissing/spooling. Is this normal? Kind of worried myY turbo is about to pop... Reasure me hahha
Another crazy solution, maybe :
If we replace the whole DPF muffler with an euro 3 catalyst??? There's some E46 catalysts on auto parts stores that has the same shape as the F series DPF. You won't have to drill nothing, just replace it with a new part. And you will have the catalyst functionality and better exhaust sound absorbing.
I appreciate opinions. Thanks
