I once got a 88 Buick with a dead fuel pump 30 miles out of a dirt road "short cut" in the boonies of Eastern MT by cracking the fuel line at the filter under the driver's seat, letting it dribble into a beer bottle I found along the road and cramming a random vacuum line down inside. Crossing the Montana badlands at WOT 1/2 mile at a time. The people with me thought I was a miracle worker. Tricks like you show here can save a fellas bacon.
I enjoyed your video. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and present it! I'm restoring a van at the moment and I know what you mean about the fuel pump. I since decided to change it out for an electric pump.
wow............. Awesome job your videos are a great inspiration ...........you really keep those old trucks running i just bought an 1985 el camino with the dreaded and demonized 305 chevy v8 doesn't leak a drop of anything and it even has the misunderstood computer controlled quadrajet carb car runs like a champ with cold ac even..................there is a 1969 gmc in a field i ve been drooling over...... no engine but heck you have to start some where
I appreciate your videos RnR. Thanks for the feedback your hard work it appericated, dont think your not understood when you communicate to the camera like it's a person because you fool me and i think your really around and i start laughing..Awesome videos man keep them going. Thanks again.
I was thinking you were not going to get the fuel pumping working with so little bench time. I was wrong and that is good for you Thank you for sharing and tak care.
I don't know which was better, his ignition or your reaction. Best laugh I've had in years! I'll have to go watch that again. Hey! Send that as a video response!
I just love it when you are thinking about what to do next! You can just see the cogs working in your brain. And most times the results are excellent! LOL! Keep the vids coming!
Great video and what a save. I had to replace the fuel pump in my El Camino because the diaphragm was bad and i had no idea it was dumping gas in the oil. Got lucky though.
Fuel pumps are cheap and fairly easy to change. Enjoyed watching you play with that one though. Id probably have cut it apart from impatience wondering what was up with it. lol
Thanks for showing that trick on the fuel pump.Fill it with carb cleaner, rattle it around, and blow it out backwards.Use low air pressure though?Once she's cleaned up, that's going to make a nice ride for somebody. What are your thoughts on ethanol ruining pump diaphragms?I just rebuilt the one for my Scout, went together nicely, but I'm getting gas in the oil.I screwed up or something wiped my pump out again...
Observation: I have noticed that a chevy 20 pick up seems to be more heavy duty than the chevy 20 van. The van only has 6 bolt wheels while the pickup has 8 bolt wheels. Don't know why I always feel that they should be the same. Also I have seen a semifloating rear axle on vans and the full floating axle on vans.
Jeff...I am doing and experiment. My 7.3 diesel needed new batteries. I bought one new Interstate Mega-Tron (stupid name) battery for $145, and one refurbished Interstate battery for $45.00. We will see how the refurbished one holds up?
oh fill the fuel bowl BEFORE pumping the accelerator! what a concept, unlike when you busted me pumping the throttle with a dry bowl, "force of habit" haha I see you did NOT use the Danny Brown method of pouring a quart of gas down the carb AND all over the carb AND all over the intake AND all over the floor and then sparking it off with the battery sitting right next to it. Where is your sense of adventure Jeff!! haha. oh, and it makes WAY too much sense to have a fire extinguisher nearby! haha
I had a 1972 G 10 green Chevy van inline 250 six column shift 3 speed. I went every ware in that old van even to drive in movie .until a drunk driver ran in to my parked van when I was at my house sleeping (what a way to get woke up. police at my door.)
She turns over, she starts, she runs, she steers, she stops, and she drives. Now put on your Tux and go to Micky Ds for an order of fries. Check her out close to discover if she's telling you lies. Cheers OLDDUDE
Geez I forgot the deck tilted I thought you were going to drive off the back HA HA HA. Never been a chev man much only changed a pump couple times on van they are a miserable son alright and trying to hold up the eccentric pin and hold the gasket that`s probably why the gasket was trashed .
Why'd folk give up on what looks to be a perfectly decent van? I'd use one like it for work tomorrow. Certainly be more dependable than my Fiat diesel :@
ElderlyIron lol, i mistakenly thought you mentioned you lived in the Big Bear California area. ooops. lol but i agree, california sucks because of all those bs emission standards on older cars. are there any emission standards on older cars where you live?
For those of us suffering from the oppression of the EPA out here in California let me say I enjoyed your videos and have recently picked up a 1977 Dodge tradesman 200 that was ordered locally with 1/2 ton suspension and brakes but a 440 RB engine that has MSD ignition system from the factory. So to answer the question of cut off year for smog in CALIFORNIA Is anything built in 1976 and newer has to be smogged. Boats and motorcycles are exempt and they have laws forbidding 2 stroke jet ski's from being used on fresh water lakes. Diesel truck which used to be exempt are now required to pass a visual and pass a test that measures sulphur particultates by the millionth. Hope that helps. Keep the faith VAN ON !!
And I was thinking "it takes 10-15 minutes to change the fuel pump, this video is 17+ minutes long" I'm really not sure if was serious or joking throughout the video.
I know about those van fuel pumps. I had a 72 and drove the wheels off of it and it seems to like to kill fuel pumps. I wouldn't mind getting another one so I have something to crash in if I miss the ferry home when I go back to school.

These videos are great! It is always great to see old vehicles get back up and running.

Hey! Send that as a video response!
i'd love to have that van. Made me tear up a little, looks just like my dad's old van,
You are an excellent mechanic.
Most people who live in the woods and own older vehicles are.
I just love it when you are thinking about what to do next! You can just see the cogs working in your brain. And most times the results are excellent! LOL! Keep the vids coming!
epic win!! i was thinking to replace the pump with a new one.. damn you saved alotta money!!
Great video and what a save. I had to replace the fuel pump in my El Camino because the diaphragm was bad and i had no idea it was dumping gas in the oil. Got lucky though.
Nice work getting the van running!
Many appreciative thanks for the info about the gas gauge because now I know in case I have further trouble with mine.

great job saving the van i saved a 1984 chevy g10 had to sell it when i moved to florida from pa .wheres whitey
there was no Cultus sold in the US...it was called the Chevrolet Sprint/Geo Metro and Suzuki Swift.
Always enjoyable ... Good job Jeff Alberta Dave
Love to watch you do things like forse air and carborator cleaner into the fuel pump. I probably would have bought a new fuel pump.
Great work, You should try replacing a chevy fuel pump in -25 degree snow storm in a 78 Blazer, COLD !
Im impressed that van seams like a good one
Thank goodness for a high ridding van.
That's a pretty nice van, man. I love vans. You should keep that one.
he sold it sadly

With all your collecting abilities, one would think that you would have an alternator for your sprint, one one that would fit.
Good work saving the van
Are there more Videos?

That fuel pump is only $29.00 two bolts and two hose clamps, easy job, considering the old pump probable has a tired or torn diaphram.
You can always grab one of those 16V race batteries and just use it with your 16 volt alternator :)

the sprint is the swift and its a worldwide car, the alt (used) is worth about $5 working because they are so plentiful in autoyards
Cool old Van!!!
I had a 1972 G 10 green Chevy van inline 250 six column shift 3 speed. I went every ware in that old van even to drive in movie .until a drunk driver ran in to my parked van when I was at my house sleeping (what a way to get woke up. police at my door.)
I like that van. Worth owning.

You should be able to get a regulator for that alternator for about $20 - it's not hard to install...

And I was thinking "it takes 10-15 minutes to change the fuel pump, this video is 17+ minutes long"
I'm really not sure if was serious or joking throughout the video.
