If you were to buy one between the two coming from the A6500 (as I do, so it's the first full frame) imagining you are 70% video a 30% photo shooter, which one would you choose? Would you save some money on the A7iv to get a full-frame lens with the remaining money or would you just go with the A7siii anyway?

Okay, I lied. Does the A7IV have the zoom toggle switch like the FX3 does? Funny you should mention the FX3 because I literally was going to add it to my cart like 2 weeks ago and noticed all the Sony cameras being marked down and that’s when it’s clicked…new camera coming!
Focus map is blue when sth is out of focus behind your object and red shows area out of focus in front if your object. Thigs that are in focus are without any colors 😃
2:18 The APS-C Crop Factor is closer 1.5 on Sony Cameras (it is close to 1.6 on Canon). Sony A7iv, FF: 7008 x 4672. APS-C: 4608 x 3072. Crop Factor = 1.521
Great video, all valid points, you are misunderstanding the focus mapping though. Anything without coloured squares is pin sharp. Light blue is slightly further away from focus, blue is further away than that, orange is slightly in front of focus red is really in front of focus.
Some of these reasons don’t make sense because half of the things mentioned are already in the a7sIII 🤨. There are only 2 reasons I would switch and that’s the high MP and Crop Mode. I hope the a7sIV has at least 24MP. The only things missing from the a7sIII are anamorphic mode, open gate, crop mode, and 24MP for it to be my perfect camera

So it seems you were unhappy with the 4k quality of the A7siii? Is the difference in sharpness that important to you? Honestly I find it sharp enough. Most of the features will come to the A7siii via a firmware update. If you cannot tell the difference between the HD 120 fps for the A7iv and 4k 120 A7siii does it not contradict your view on sharpness?
He’s really dumb, he’d take the shitty 1.5x crop from A7IV footage over uncropped A7sIII footage. He said he loves the crop and how it gives him the extra reach, but what happens when you shoot indoors in a tight space using a prime 24mm?? 🤣 he didn’t think of all the scenarios and being able to shoot ultra wide is important especially when you don’t know to expect when being booked to a particular event or wedding.
@@NVIK5 Yeah, he doesn't really have that much clue about what he's talking about, he kinda proved me that the main reason he's making youtube videos is to add fillers to his channel/content regardless of whether he documented what he's talking about prior to actual shooting or not. If Crop was a good thing then the Canon shooters wouldn't have bashed the 1.7!! crop in the 5D MkIV. If he's shooting sports exclusively then fine, enjoy the crop, but we also have to take everyone's real world usage in consideration that doesn't really welcome the crop in the majority of cases.
Just to add something. The Focus breathing compensation is still mostly working for GM lens and some of G lens. it is still not working for any third party lens just yet. Thanks for a good review.
I have totally pre-ordered the Sony a7iv. I have been waiting for this camera since the a7siii came out. a7siii is a lot of money and so is the a7iv but it is easier to stomach the a7iv price! I cannot wait to get this camera!!!

@@viktor928 I would agree with you about both. Everyone makes a big deal about the cropped 4k but it will be some of the best cropped 4k that Sony has to offer. The 10 bit 4.2.2 is 100% got me. I am so done with 8 bit.
The reason I got the A7IV over the A7SIII/FX3 is that the A7IV fixed the green-yellow roll-off everyone complained about (i.e. dslr shooter). The colors are better tuned than A1 or A7SIII/FX3 (According to G.U.) and in my own experience the colors are great
For me there’s a number of thing that would stop me or least make think twice from buying the a7iv. Rolling shutter as you say is a big one for me. The view finder resolution, buffer size, the shutter speed when shooting photos.10fps compared to 6 on the a7iv. The crop factors would annoy the hell out of me. As it stands if you don’t need the resolution the a7s3 is by far the more complete camera. A7s3 gets more right in my eyes. But they add stuff and take stuff away.

Why people after so many years of talking about sensors apsc vs full frame, don’t get that the focal length of the lens does not change, is only the field of view that gets narrower. A 50mm stays a 50mm whether is full frame or apsc .

Would you prefere 4k60 with Super 35 but in 10bit 4:2:2 OR would you take 4k60 without a crop but in 8bit 4:2:0? I think I prefere the 10bit and take the crop and if I dont want it I just shoot in 1080p60 10bit 4:2:2 full frame.

Great info! I'm thinking about joining team Sony. I mostly shoot talking head footage in 4k 30. I am debating between the a7IV and Cannon (R6?). My only hesitancy is that, side-by-side, the Cannon footage seems to have punchier, more vibrant colors and skin tones out of camera. However, colors look good in this video! Do you think that I can achieve Canon (or better) colors out of camera (without grading)? Thanks again!
There's a good selection of picture profiles, settings of which can be adjusted in-camera to mimic or get close to a desired look. Most if not all modern brands/camera models have 4k30 just check for rec limits/overheating & availability of special gear that is helpful for your specific needs. What mics are you using for head footage? Lights?
Just be a bit careful with talking head if going the R6 route. It's currently my daily shooter and I do love it a LOT, however going into summer it is starting to overhead on longer interview shoots, usually last around an hour or so before it needs to be turned off and allowed to cool down for 5 or so minutes (This is even with the Atomos Ninja V recorder too..). I'd look elsewhere than the R6, possibly the EOS R if you plan on doing mainly talking head.

I would only sell my a7siii so I can buy 2 a7ivs instead of my current combo an a7siii and a7iii which is difficult especially in post. Unfortunately I didn't have enough cash to get 2 x a7siii so 2 x a7ivs seems like the next best combo.

Edit…after watching the entire video, I saw you touched upon the crop factor in 4k60. My initial comment was related to the crop mode section:)). Always better to be able to choose if you apply crop or not for video.
I wish there will be a firmware to upgrade the A7SIII AF system in the near future. the A7SIII's AF is good when it can see human eyes, otherwise it sux.
Focus breathing compensation check here: Pretty sure it doesn't fix it "regardless of what lens you use" and is only for approved lenses on a list Sony has. For example it doesn't fix breathing on the 50mm 2.5 G lens and the other G lenses of that size do not benefit from focus breathing compensation yet.
I've seen that the A7IV has variable shutter in video mode where you can dial the shutter speed more precisely. This sounds hugely useful for me if I ever want to grab footage from a CRT TV. But does the A7SIII have this feature? I can't see anything online anywhere! With both cameras having their advantages and disadvantages, I'm torn which one to go for.

I actually don't really mind the 4k 60p crop! In fact it's kind of a good thing to me, because the times I need to shoot 60p I usually use the sigma 18-35, which is a crop lens anyway! I'm very much happy that crop mode is also downsampled!
Agreed. I know sony did this to keep the A7Siii appealing but there are so many ways around that crop. It's very hard for me to see that as a major fall back... Maybe the pixel police 😆.. Heck, even the 1080 on the A7IV looks crisp and modern. Whether it's good is subjective but this is far from a deal breaker for me also. ✊
If you like photo more than go for the a7iv. You can spend the extra 1000 on lens or m1 pro macbook. however s is the best for video. I may get a7iv if screen is decent since I don't use 4k 120 often. Also I think only the a7iv has beauty filter right? More Friendly for girls or save some times for editing lol
I thought about selling my a7siii and getting the a7iv, but I need a B cam and if I did that I would end up in the same boat. So I think I’m gonna get a a7iii or bite the bullet and get the a7iv to go along with my a7siii…. We have got to come up with a better way to describe these cams lol
Not sure I'd agree that A7iii owners would be happy to "upgrade" to another camera with bad rolling shutter performance because that's what they already have. In fact, it's a deal breaker for me.
But the battery life for the A7IV in 4K sucks (only about 20 mins), then shut down because internal temperature is too high. This happened in the winter! I returned mine and will look at getting the A7SIII.
I think never should be compared 2 different camera, aS7 III is especially for video a7IV is a hybrid camera for both video and photo. And it has 1,5 developement advantage over a7S III. I think a7IV is not better in iso and dynamic. It has advantages in autofocus and cropped/stabilized mode, but it didn't get 4k120p and has an awful rolling shutter (or I should use 35mm crop mode for a little bit better rolling shutter effect - insane in an FF camera). So also a beginner filmmaker will buy still A7SIII overt the a7IV. "Dogs must be fed"... They have given something for people, but I think this is not that why someone could say "Selling my Sony A7SIII for the Sony A7IV"... But I understand, this product must be also promoted and sold...
I have the A7C with the small rig cage. A lot more comfortable to hold. I have ordered the A7iv and have not yet decided if to exchange the A7C or keep as a second body

You really don’t need more than 12mp for 4K video .for photo, the more the better
you can also map on previous Sony cameras ISO to be on dial ring (no need to press ISO button and select ISO) just turn you dial ring

Yes please do a video on color. Both slog 10 bit and standard 10 bit. I’m noticing an improvement in skin tones and green shift

I've seen that the A7IV has variable shutter in video mode where you can dial the shutter speed more precisely. This sounds hugely useful for me if I ever want to grab footage from a CRT TV. But does the A7SIII have this feature? I can't see anything online anywhere!
With both cameras having their advantages and disadvantages, I'm torn which one to go for.
I don’t think the A7SIII has it, at least not to me knowledge!

I actually don't really mind the 4k 60p crop! In fact it's kind of a good thing to me, because the times I need to shoot 60p I usually use the sigma 18-35, which is a crop lens anyway! I'm very much happy that crop mode is also downsampled!
Agreed. I know sony did this to keep the A7Siii appealing but there are so many ways around that crop. It's very hard for me to see that as a major fall back... Maybe the pixel police 😆.. Heck, even the 1080 on the A7IV looks crisp and modern. Whether it's good is subjective but this is far from a deal breaker for me also. ✊
I don't mind it either, because I'm usually doing close-ups when shooting slow-mo.

yep, a7iv/a7S3/FX3/A1 all have same active ibis which is a big improvement over standard ibis

Sony should really bring a firmware update where users will get option to enable 4k-60 in full frame! I dont mind pixel binning or whatever issue is.
i would buy the A7 IV today, if there where no crop at 4k 60...then this camera would be perfect for me...

If you like photo more than go for the a7iv. You can spend the extra 1000 on lens or m1 pro macbook. however s is the best for video. I may get a7iv if screen is decent since I don't use 4k 120 often. Also I think only the a7iv has beauty filter right? More Friendly for girls or save some times for editing lol
I thought about selling my a7siii and getting the a7iv, but I need a B cam and if I did that I would end up in the same boat. So I think I’m gonna get a a7iii or bite the bullet and get the a7iv to go along with my a7siii…. We have got to come up with a better way to describe these cams lol

Not sure I'd agree that A7iii owners would be happy to "upgrade" to another camera with bad rolling shutter performance because that's what they already have. In fact, it's a deal breaker for me.

It greatly depends on what youre' shooting. If your'e shooting lots of fast moving handheld stuff, then yeah the A7S3/FX3 is going to better.
A7iv autofocuss down to -4EV, while the A7S3 down to -6EV. So if you shoot in low light, A7S3 is much better. FYI A1 is -5EV

But the battery life for the A7IV in 4K sucks (only about 20 mins), then shut down because internal temperature is too high. This happened in the winter! I returned mine and will look at getting the A7SIII.
About the crop, could you not just crop on the sensor on the A7S3 anyway? It's the best of both worlds.
If you crop in on the A7Siii in 4K, it goes to 1080p because of the 12mp.

I think never should be compared 2 different camera, aS7 III is especially for video a7IV is a hybrid camera for both video and photo. And it has 1,5 developement advantage over a7S III. I think a7IV is not better in iso and dynamic. It has advantages in autofocus and cropped/stabilized mode, but it didn't get 4k120p and has an awful rolling shutter (or I should use 35mm crop mode for a little bit better rolling shutter effect - insane in an FF camera). So also a beginner filmmaker will buy still A7SIII overt the a7IV. "Dogs must be fed"... They have given something for people, but I think this is not that why someone could say "Selling my Sony A7SIII for the Sony A7IV"... But I understand, this product must be also promoted and sold...

It would be great second camera as back up to my Sony A s 7 3. 4k 120 is life. I don't think I could replace it with this camera though.

I have the A7C with the small rig cage. A lot more comfortable to hold. I have ordered the A7iv and have not yet decided if to exchange the A7C or keep as a second body

This is scary thought A7iv over the A7siii for video. The A7siii is the same as FX3 which is in Sony's cinema line. This must be a paid video.
