Turning an Oak crotch, natural live edge, danger bowl.

- This is the making of a winged, live edge bowl turned from an oak crotch piece.
I love making these bowls, there's something about the odd shapes which add an extra element of danger that make these a really exciting piece to turn.
One or two issues I had;
My chuck screw didn't have a perfect hold so at the start of the turning I had to make very light cuts just until the tenon or rather, the mortice, was cut into what was going to be the base.
Once that was done I felt a lot more confident that the piece wasn't going to fly off the lathe although, I would need to flip it round again to tidy up the quick fix.
The eagle eyed among you will notice that in doing this I flipped twice as I misjudged the size of the jaws on the chuck so had to widen it a little, no big deal there though.
The log came from a large oak tree that had fallen in a storm only a week prior to turning so it still had a very high moisture content but this really worked in my favour. Overall it is roughly 12mm thick at the edge to about 20mm in the centre. It may get one final turn once it's dried a bit.
Thanks for watching!

Haha I love the title! Every bowl I make feels like a danger bowl
😂😂 cheers buddy!
Great bowl and video and the main thing I learned from this one is how much I still have to learn in woodturning
If you could just pop round here for a week or two we can get started
Not at all mate, your turning is great, it's just the right wood and sharp tools doing all the work. Have a go at something that's a weird shape, go super slow and gentle and you will surprise yourself for sure 😁
Lathe was on its slowest setting which I think is 500rpm.
@@tfturning I'm not having that you nailed that one
@@WoodyWood thank you mate 😊
Looks scary to turn, but the result is beautiful.
Thanks, it is a little scary but just adds to the fun😁
Definitely a squeaky bum bowl, looks terrifying to turn! the finished bowl is beautiful.
Cheers dude😁
Was on the edge of my seat wondering how you were going to make a round bowl. You've made me rethink what I thought I knew about bowls, thank you.
You're welcome, thank you for watching 😊
Great job 👍👍 nice bowl 👍
Thank you😊

Many thanks Rascal king 😊
Very nice 😊 ॐ
Nice. I am sitting on an English Walnut crotch piece (already halved) that I want to do like this, but I keep thinking I will eff it up.
Cheers bud! Theres only one way to find out and with it halved you'll have two shots at it 😀This video was pretty early on in my turning and I had some rather questionable practices back then, mainly using a spindle roughing gouge on the inside a bowl, definitely don't do that!haha
Good luck with the walnut and thanks for watching!
Hello I saw you gave me a follow on Insta really appreciate it. Really nice crotch bowl you made here but I have to say 1 that's not in the comments and it's for yourre own safety NEVER and i mean never use a spindle rouging gouge on a cross grain project . One bad catch and the teng or how they call it can break and in a split second yourre gouge will be flying around. But I don't only wanna complain so once again really nice bowl with not that much experience. I'll defently gonna give it a thumps up and subscribe to yourre channel
Thanks, I have had this pointed out to me a few times since and this is how we learn, I'm just thankful it was from a comment rather that things going wrong! Not sure why I didn't get a notification for this comment nor is it showing on the video. I appreciate the heads up though, I will not be using that gouge on anything other than a spindle in future. I appreciate the sub and hope you enjoy the content despite my poor choice in tool for that particular job. We live and learn 👍
awesome all round, international karate synth
Haha cheers dude ✌️
What did it look like after it dried?
I speed dried this one in the microwave so didn't look any different to the thumbnail. Cheers
Please tell me that is not a roughing gauge u have used as it sure looks like it ?
Unfortunately I am unable to do that. Yes, what you see is a spindle roughing gouge, and a super cheap one at that. Don't worry, I have had a firm telling off for this several times over and that particular gouge has been nowhere near a bowl or any other cross grain turning ever since. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate it! 👍
U should take it down really as v v dangerous
