Have you ever seen the Indus Valley civilization's seals? There is a seal with a horned man sitting between two animals; I am not saying there is any proven link, but it is interesting to ponder the possibility that there is one. Also can you do a video on the Hindu mythological God Shiva, I am interested to see a video on him. I am not Hindu, but I am interested to see information on the different ancient cultures of the world.
As a small boy my grandfather taught me to hunt. When ever we where lucky enough to get something, he would always have me pray to the god of the hunt and give thanks to Cernunnos. My grandfather was from Czechoslovakia.

Considering the Celts ranged from Ireland to Turkiye, this isn't super out there, but also, Wicca as a religion was founded in the 30s, so it's likely he was a follower of Wicca. As Czechoslovakia would follow an entirely different kind of polytheism

I find it sad, that we know so little about Celtic culture, when they were nearly as advanced as early medieval people. They were just overshadowed by a culture that was over a millennia ahead of its time.
Thus, many still think, in all seriousness, that Celts and Germanic tribes lived like cavemen as hunter and gatherers!
The Romans started the destruction of Celtic culture. It was an easy way of showing that the people they destroyed weren't worth saving.

I'm from austria and almost all of our todays culture and folkore is celtic with a "christian filter".

Thats why i love supernatural or mythological comics or stories like hellboy bprd etc.. most mythology in media is greek and Egyptian and norse...you gotta look deeper for the more interesting stuff to which i gladly do so
I love this! I also want to point out that, even though he's similar to Pan and other horned gods, his antlers are what sets him apart. Stags shed their antlers yearly, and a lot of detailed statues of Cernunnos have yet holes to place and remove antlers when needed. I also want to say that in ancient depictions of Cernunnos, he doesn't have an erect phallus! It's a modern interpretation!
True, but the antler associated with ithyphallic powers was common across the ancient world…so I wouldn’t make too much about the differences here.

Then i eventually realized that they don’t know anything more than the programming from Roman imperialism, transferred into European feudalism and mercantile colonialism. My mother once showed me how my hatred was no different than what I complained about! I had to really look at myself and realize my Ásatrú teachers were also influenced by the hatred. That’s why I got my BA in Religious Studies. Mindfulness has brought me to see the root of true human spirituality, and the failures of animalistic dogmas of control.

I looked up and saw a stag he was calm and it calmed me down, i followed him as he walked calmly 30 feet in front of me after 5 minutes i was out of the wood and the stag ran off.
I know what i saw and i believe this stag was sent to guide me....

My favorite thing about your videos is how respectful you are. I've seen videos of people explaining pagan deities in a negative way, so thank you!
This came from what I consider to be a reliable source; A shaman, tattoo artist, music artist, and good friend. This man takes pagan worship very seriously and Cernunnos is his favorite. He told me one story of how every evening, Cernunnos holds the sun in his horns and takes it through the underworld to provide sunlight to the spirits on the other side. Then brings back the sun at dawn.
I know that some depictions of a sun god, the rays above the head could resemble horns. Cernunnos is also the oldest god. The great first being perhaps? Before people named it.
I’d like to know more honestly. This story is truly fascinating.
It makes sense that he would carry the sun through the underground, like a god of the underworld/death, then release it come morning.

I worship Cernunnos and I find him so mysterious. Like he embodies all the mysteries of nature that we will never understand.
I have never found Nature difficult to understand. Birth, Death, rebirth. Survival of the fittest, Nature & Nurture, All boils down to one simple rule. Survival. Nature removes that which cannot thrive, to pave the way for that which can. Or such is my own understanding of it. I lay no claim to any expertise or superior wisdom on the matter. I read, & think on the matter, & glean what I can. I am ever open to learning new understanding of such matters. While I do not hold with "gods" as Actual existant beings, the symbolism of Cernunnos does make most sense to me & has a draw to me as a focus of the Natural Cycle.
@@pfalky2k Most people see natural selection as a ruthless cruelty, but in nature the beings who are weak and suffer are killed fairly quickly. They don't suffer for long(there are always exception, I know).
In our modern industrial society we think long lifespans are a positive thing, we drag out and prolong suffering. We call this ethical, but it isn't always.
We also allow suffering people to survive with technology, and their suffering is transmitted down through generations. So it continues from person to person instead of being dealt with.
In nature these weaknesses are removed, and animals die quickly. So much suffering is spared. Nature is very merciful if you look at her the right way.
Looking at nature this way requires a certain selfless and mature mindet. As well as an enlightened perspective.

Cernunnos could also be seen in the Welsh Pantheon as the god Arawn, who was Lord of Annwn, the Otherworld, where souls were taken after death. He is associated with The Wild Hunt and with mythical creatures he kept as his hunting dogs, the Cwn Annwn.
Less likely, as there were other welsh gods who were seen as guards to the dead, and while the other world and underworld are similar, they are not the same. An example my friend gave me is a d&d example, where the otherworld is more to the fey wild, and the underworld is more like the shadow fel, albeit more friendly, and less shadowy. One is also more for the gods and fairies, and has more living and dead, and the other is the almost complete opposite. Plus, arawn didn't have horns.

but he is also associated as Merlin (although his real name is different) Merlin is a title. He's been associated with this Horned God. That's how I ended up here

Thanks for sharing that's very helpful. The Greek name for 'void' is chaos, this was their first God, from which the rest descend. I found before that Lord Shiva has a name or title meaning the Void. I like your description of the rest being manifested or incarnated instead of given birth. In the Greek next is Uranus (sky) then Chronos (time) then zeus (light) then hermes (origin/embodiment of word) then last Pan which name and title is the 'sum total of all words/spells. I note zeus was part of a trinity which included hades which I think of as a destroyer 🕉

I first heard about Cernunnos in this obscure PS3 game called Folklore, where the first boss is named after him. I love it when games reference mythology that you might not have heard of.
In Eldenring there's a couple of Deer bosses which are inspired by Cernunnos,ya might want to check it out.Its one of my favorite bossfights in the game.

I love Cernunnos. As a Pagan, he has a very special place in my heart. He was actually the first Pagan male deity to reach out to me as I was realizing what my spiritual path was (I'd been raised Christian). From my experience, Cernunnos' energy is very much the "get shit done" god. He always appears to me whenever I need to charge fearlessly into life. He's not necessarily warm and fuzzy, but he's always patient and loving; even when he leads you through dark or tough times, he reassures it's for the best and that you'll emerge stronger for it.

I know this is a comment from a year ago, but i have a thought, Cernunnos have been around my mind and making his presence really strong in my life lately, but everytime i notice him, i get the urge to cry, to smile and bow to him, his presence is usually like that? I follow The morrigan and i'm new to Dagda wich is a lot calmer than Morrigan, so i'm used to striking signs of them, is Cernunnos like that? Thank you.

What amazes me is that how ancient mythology and culture around the world seems to be connected with each other so well even though at those times communication and travel was much difficult. It appears that ancient cultures all over the world influenced each other. For example - Pashupati was the God of animals who was worshipped since the ancient Indus civilization in India. Pashupati's appearance on ancient tablets match with Cernunnos very much - Horned head and surrounded by animals...

"You" don't exist. Nothing of that which you see, touch or hear, exists. It's all an elaborated fantasy, created by the source.

And about christianity. I won't debate you about this belief, it's within your right, but any entity become stronger if you believe in it. So did the entities religious people awoke thousands of years ago. But these entities, that obviously claim themselves to be gods, angels or prophets, are just entities like you and me, but with the exception of receiving power from millions of other entities around them.
Be careful what you believe in, it will shape your reality. I've taken side before, until I saw the horror this caused. I know now why elder spirits tend not to choose side anymore. Why they choose solitude.

If I'm not mistaken, the bible even describes true evil (demons), and looking over the age of the abrahamic God, the description fits "him" perfectly. That's pretty much why I left christianity behind already in my teens.

This gave me chills for moment! I've always been drawn to celtic believes despite being raised christian, and I can't help but connect this deity with a 'creature' I would often draw wearing the skull of a stag, or had stag horns growing from his head. Thanks for the information!!

I felt drawn to him. Celtics are part of my ancestry, but my ancestors were converted to Christianity generations ago. I’ve always wondered if Cernunnos or someone else was who my ancestors worshipped before Christianity drove itself in.
If anyone is familiar with Warcraft, the Wild God Cenarius is totally based on Cernunnos, even having one of his titles, Lord of the Forest. Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage also has many similarities to Cernunnos, not least of which are the horns and beard, and general demeanor.
Recently, I was at a metaphysical store. I'm already a witch, a green witch at that, and there was an altar with a bronze statue of a man who was half stag and half human. For some reason I felt like I knew who he was but I didn't. I asked the witch who owned the store and she told me his name was "Cernunnos" For some reason I felt so drawn to him as if I knew him. She turned to me after a while and said "this painting looks like you" and she pointed to the painting that was behind the cash register. It was a woman in the forest who had long red hair like me and with a face with similar features. Perhaps I was a priestess of Cernunnos in a past life? I found the whole experience to be too coincidental.

i think through trade and the proximity of cultures, each region adopted their own version of the "horned god of the wild/animals" archetype. one cool aspect of this is that each culture gave him horns of local animals. cernunnos had deer antlers, but pan had goat horns because theres no deer in greece. idk i just find it interesting.

I know it will sound silly, but I kinda feel attracted to Celtic mythology. I have Portuguese and German ancestrality, but it's almost like I know the Celtic myths and stories. It feels like when you are doing a test and there is this question that you did study about what's being asked, but you don't remember the answer even though you know you do know. I just feel connected somehow.

The range of Celts is vast and includes Germany and Portugal. Celtic is not exclusive to the British Isles, like Ireland, Scotland and Wales- it's much larger than that! And if you feel a pull, follow it! 🤗 No shame in that!

The so called Pashupati seal (2350-2000BC) of Indus valley civilization found in Mohenjo-daro, modern day Pakistan is eerily similar to Gundestrup cauldron found in Denmark. Horned human figure seated in a very similar position surrounded by wild animals. Such similar depictions 2000 years and 3500 miles apart.

I dreamt of him before I ever knew of him, anything about him or his existence. There was a guide lady (she was in some khaki uniform) who told me he's been known by 4 names throughout history in different places but he is all the same.
I'm not saying bc my dream that confirms that as some kind of fact. Just a damned strong push of my intuition saying it makes sense and is so. I can't prove it, idk if anyone could yet.. or anymore.

Oh & he was huge, as big as a large cliff. He was awakening, shaking himself loose so it was extremely loud & scared me so I flew back a ways and that was when she stated yelling over the noise, telling me about him. I couldn't catch it all but I remembered enough to research it in the morning. I found this, after asking a couple friends I thought might know his name, at least one.

Yes, Pashupati 7:01 is considered to be a very old god, who was worshipped by the Indus Valley culture. Possibly going back as far as 12,000 years (if you subscribe to the theory of the existance of pre-catastrophe coastal civilizations).

I'm a reconstructionist Celtic/Germanic pagan, and I want to say that I think you've done very well in covering this deity. So little is known about Cernunnos. You've covered largely what we know, and why we don't know much more.
Ocean Keltoi I'm also a reconstructionist Pagan/Heathen, though I worship the gods of the Norse. I do find Celtic belief to be extremely intriguing, & I'd love to know more about it.
I'd suggest reading Ronald Hutton on Celtic religious history. Start with any of his books. He's a very accessible history writer.

Native American (going back a long way) called this land AMARU KA meaning- land of the serpent. In Ohio is the largest serpent mound actually called SERPENTS MOUND....located in ADAMS county Ohio. In Chinese OHIO means HELLO. Its also widely argued that the Appalachian Mountains are the OLDEST in the world. I most certainly see enough proof that they are. So if this land was once known as Amaru Ka then its highly doubtful that it's named after Amerigo Vespucci. However the Native American God is the Great Spirit. It is noted a great deal. Thing is, what if we came here. Chinese and other Asian countries worship serpents and the Appalachian region is the land of the serpent. So did mankind begin here? In sure Adams County Ohio was named after Adams the U.S. president but it could be because of Serpents mound. With Adams being so connected to the elite plan he could have very well made it Adams county to symbolize that Serpents mound is where Adam gobbled up the forbidden fruit. Just saying. There is so much evidence that America is the oldest land. The U.S. has the largest and most Serpent Mounds and they worship serpents in Asia who has none. A replica of noahs arc was built next to the town I live in, in Dry Ridge Ky. Could be symbolism that Noah built his arc there

another friend -we didn’t worship gods. We have a great reverence for nature. We do have a saying “mitakuye oyasin” -we are all related. Meaning, we are all connected...from the rocks on the ground to the birds in the sky everything has a purpose. Even stones are called “grandfathers” as they have been here for ages and have seen many things. We bring them into the sweat lodge and they help us to purify. You see everything Creator has made is never taken for granted and we always give thanks. There is SO MUCH TO LEARN AND TEACH... I would love to tell you more, sorry I write this quickly.

Actually the mounds where built by the Mississippi river tribes who where ruled over by God kings. They definitely believed in the connection between all things but it wasn't like they where actively worshipping snakes. Most tribes believed in the Great Spirit many still do. Certain tribes though actually had different dieties associated with different things. For example Chaac the mayan rain God.

Khnum/Khnemu from Ancient Egypt. Had the head of a Ram and was once of Egypt’s most ancient gods. He was also associated with the fertility and the wild. Very interesting : ).
I love how there are so many ties between completely different cultures but yet have the same deities in one form or another. I feel that this makes it more truer for my understanding of Paganism and why it still matters.

BTIsaac you could say the same to any religion. Just because you don’t agree with the beliefs doesn’t mean it’s a scam.
BTIsaac all religions are technically made up, whilst satanism was obviously a reaction to Christianity, Wicca is not. in fact the founder of Wicca had a reverence for Christianity. Gardernerian Wicca also does not claim to date back to the celts. It traces itself to a new forest witchcraft coven which he based the religion off.
BTIsaac to say it has no tradition is quite untrue though, I agree that Wicca is quite popular, amongst the young especially but Wicca is a theistic religion important not to forget that. It also does have a multitude of philosophies and beliefs many of which I disagree with but to say it has none is untrue.
BTIsaac to an extent yes but many will remain Wiccan, it seems to me that Wicca is a gateway to other forms of religion rather than something most people remain as. I agree with you their.

A plants' 'brain' is in it's roots where it connects in a symbiotic form with mycellium (which helps bring nutrients n water to the roots)

It is with good reason that we know so little of Celtic mythology. In his Gallic Wars, Julius Caesar described the Druids as taking 10 years to memorize their mythological stories and never writing them down. The Celts did write down things like business contracts using Greek letters, but religious/mythological texts were simply memorized.

I think Cernunnos can be described as the personification of the Greek word "Thumos".
We list things like "the wild in humanoid form" or "male vitality" because we no longer have a word for the spiritedness he represents. If you are an excellent fighter (war being the realm of men) you could be seen as a god of death. Wont become prosperous if you lack the spirit to go out and earn money.

Suddenly I get the feeling that the Pan in the movie Pan's Labyrinth could be actually Cerunnos after hearing this. The connection is too strong not to be.
Except there are other horned gods, and he is named pan, a horned god with GOAT/RAM horns, and cares for humans. While cernnunos has DEER horns, and DOESN'T care for humans, and wears a torc. "Too strong not to be", yeah, I am sorry, don't think so. They are similar, but not the same.
@@zionthedragon8866 when you meet Pan it's honestly very hard to say exactly what animal the horns belong to. The being is male and female, human and nature, spiritual and earthly. Although there are many legends which spring up and different languages, the name and attributes are generally universal. one way to tell they're the same is to see how they get drawn, in my encounter Pan was sat cross legged. Although, I did not witness the serpent, that is how the scene is depicted 🕉
@@grantaum9677 what do you mean, when you meet him? He isn't real, he fictitious, also, I am going as what is depicted, and it's not hard to see what animal horns he has. And since he(pan) is described as male, and is depicted with him and his followers, it's safe to assume pan and cernnunos is a MALE.
And just because a concept is universal, doesn't mean they are all the same being. Just because you have a sun god, doesn't mean all sun gods are the same. And again, you may believe what you want, but I am going off of real life historical facts of the mythos, and artwork and recordings of the god from PRE-NEO pagan times.

I'm not as active in the community as I used to be, but still make it a point to observe his festival in December by sharing rustic gifts and getting toasty with friends. I'd like to know more about cernunous involvement with Beltane goddess of spring & herne the Hunter. I can't find much about it. However offerings to cernunous are pretty specific. Bones coins bullets hunting gear, anything like that. I have a few things set for cernunous on my altar to the horned one

What a great post!! I love the mystery surrounding Celtic Mythology, being mainly an oral tradition. From what I remember the Romans allowed freedom of religion to its client/conquered kingdoms (at some point), but outlawed the religion of the Druids, as they feared their ‘magic’. Thus we see the Rape of Mona etc. I think the only serving document about the religion was written by a prisoner of the Romans and is the only documentation that details any of their practices. I also find that a lot of Marion Zimmerman’s books, although fiction are well researched, as well as entertaining 😊😊

Great video, recently this past late summer a male deer followed me through the woods and began to chase my dog and I. I was terrified but I managed to escape. As I ran out of the woods I went to the other side of the road. It was creepy because he didn't follow me, he just stopped and stared into my eyes for an uncomfortably long amount of time. My dad said it was like the jagermeister legend I think it was the horned god's spirit lol
