I love the way Dionysus's depiction changed over the course of history, from a terrifying god of madness and rebirth, to a jolly party-go'er. Definitely one of my favorites. Then again, I'm probably a bit biased, since my last name happens to be "Bacchus" haha
It's not so much a change, as selective representation. He was both. In early stories of Travel he was a god of foreign wars. Also a founding figure in organized religion. The cult itself was quite violent at times, but unbridled human emotion is more to blame. His personality was always fair, thoughtful, and fun loving. Only lashing out at some matter of business or great insult

The story of Dionysus and Ariadne is one of my favourite Greek myths,they are one of my favourite mythical couples along with Eros and Psyche.

There are two versions of the myth. In one, Dionysus convinced Theseus to leave Ariadne behind on Naxos so Dio could marry her. In the mainly accepted myth, Theseus left Ariadne behind on Naxos so he could marry her sister Phaedra, instead. Dionysus found Ariadne and married her on the spot.

I didn't realize that the story of King Midas involved Dionysus, or was even Greek, until relatively recently. I went to a catholic school for like a year, and they had a lesson on King Midas, but they twisted it. They kept the specifics of Midas' kingdom generic enough to make it sound like Western Europe, and changed Dionysus to an angel, who came to teach Midas a lesson in generosity.

Christianity taking the lessons and wisdom of other spiritual traditions and passing them off as their own is a habit of theirs. One that many Pagans, from across the world, should not allow them to do any longer.
That is why I find the Greek gods so sympathetic. They are largely ust people. A god traveling around, getting drunk off his toga, teaching people how to make wine and hanging out with the mortals? That is my kinda god.

Dionysus is also the god of theater. And, as an eclectic Pagan who works in the theatrical arts, I love him for that.

I assume that's in reference to "The Bacchae" and if it is, you're wrong. Dionysus driving people mad has nothing to do with them refusing to be sex slaves. He drove people mad who wouldn't give him proper worship or who spread false rumors about his mother.
As for Zeus, yes, he does indeed deceive a lot of women and is a rapist. What's your point? I never mentioned him in my original post.

I absolutely love Dionysus. He's definitely my favorite Greek God Ever. He's super cool and fun.

Dionysus is a lot stranger and more powerful than is depicted in the more 'modern' tales which were revamped after the Greek Dark Age. In the Orphic traditions, he was originally being a deity known as Zagreus Dionysus who was meant to be the heir of Zeus, to eventually reign after the King had finally lost his power similar to how Cronus had earlier. But Hera grew jealous and had the titans kill Dionysus, they dismembered him and ate his flesh believing that it would enable them to take the throne of Olympus, hence the reason for Dionysus' preferred way of killing fools is via dismemberment. Zeus found out, killing the Titans with his thunderbolts but he was already dead, it would be Athena who discovered his heart and how, eventually, he would be resurrected becoming both Dionysus and the God of Resurrection with the power to defy death itself. This was made evident when he went to the Underworld and resurrected his wife, an ability that during those traditions that very few but Hades, Zeus, and Eros (if you go with some older lore during that time) had the power to do so with all of them being extremely powerful in their own right. The event of his resurrection was followed by his heart being used to impregnate a mortal woman, who was not named at the time but would eventually go on to be changed to Seleme.
But despite his insanity and party nature, Dionysus was considered one of the allies of humanity, oftentimes embodying humanity's inner nature and ultimate freedom though he was not very popular in ancient greece until Alexander the Great came around. Yet as Zagreus, he was known as the supreme god having a powerful connection to the Underworld and was able to take Gaia as his wife, this was ultimately changed but the power of him remained. In the Orphic traditions, he was not a god to mess with, often being seen as very dangerous with the resurrection and dismembering aspects being central to him, including the madness which turning people into Dolphins was only a small portion of what he could have done. Yet he was always central to wine post-resurrection.
*Note: I should mention that in more "modern" greek lore, Zeus fought Typhon by himself but that wasn't the case. In older lore, both Athena and Dionysus were standing by his side during the fight and they attacked the beast, buying time between the lightning bolts that were being hurled at Typhon.
Coupled with the legend of him traveling to India, regarded already to the ancient Greeks as a mystical land of higher (Vedic & Yogic) philosophies, to acquire more knowledge, this was a young god who POWERED UP.
I wonder if Dionysus also informed much of the myths & legends of Jesus Christ.

The only thing is that Orphic traditions are really really strange. Usually avoided by all other poets. Strabo, Homer, all avoided the tales of Orphic traditions. So now they're mostly seen as false or the "what if" stories.
@@XxMasterPt That is due to the change of the culture at the time and Dionysus was never popular in Greece until much later during the time of Alexander the Great where he had already underwent a revision to make him the current way he is. That would be the primary reason why poets avoided the Orphic Traditions which others held true to and maintained, so it wouldn't be mainstream. Not only that but even when he did become popular, very few focused on his aspects of as the god of resurrection, madness and dismemberment but kept the aspects which would have been favorable for those in power such as him being the god of parties which is what was kept. They merely cherry picked the aspects they want and left the others behind and called them false. Which is also why he tends to get mixed with Bacchus. To get the full scope of him, the Orphic Traditions and Mycanaen aspects of him have to be studied as well and known. You could say that his original lore was "

@@XxMasterPt Also to refine the aspect of him being problematic, Dionysus focused more on the lower classes, focusing on slaves, outsiders and women all of which had no rights within the greek system yet rejected the nobles, the rich and even the kings and queens that ruled. This wasn't really for them and because of that, they attempted to suppress it but the more they suppressed, the more people came to it. It offered freedom from oppression and frankly inhibitions as well, I mean seriously, any time a god is having their followers rip a king to pieces would be ONE HELL of a problematic statement at the time. The fact that people were more or less equal within the traditions didn't help either but it was only ever popular within the lower masses rather than the higher levels of society. And frankly, its understandable why they would want something like this crushed, why they suppressed and, later on, changed it to become the way know it today. This type of idea could cause a revolution with some places like Sparta having more slaves than citizens, that is a scary thought and if they were emboldened by this, there would be a massive mess on the ancient greek political and cultural system.
So when they are avoided, when they are seen as false or what if stories, that was their attempt to discredit it so that trouble wouldn't be brewed and a larger situation would occur.
Dionysos has to be one of my favorite of the Olympian deities. And I must say, nice use of the second _Homeric Hymn to Dionysos._

I can't remember where I read this, but Dionysus was said to travel to India and learned more sacred mysteries. Dionysus and Hermes are my two favorite gods from Greek mythology. Also in another version of the phallus is that Dionysus actually modeled it off the shepard's own and used it to keep his oath. Very weird haha

In the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, Dionysus is acting director of Camp Half-Blood along side Chiron. He is called Mr. D. because names have power. It's not a job he enjoys, but a punishment from Zeus, after Mr. D went after an off-limits nymph twice.
He is also forbidden from drinking any wine during his punishment, which was set for 100 years. It was cut down to 50 at the end of the first series.
What's funny is that because of his punishment, Mr. D drinks Diet Coke, while his Roman counterpart, Bacchus, drinks Diet Pepsi.

Dionysus one of my favorit god
In some variations, Dionysus as a child forgot to bring back to the nymphs the grape juice he was assigned to prepare, and rather played with the satyrs and other nymphs. Several weeks later he found again that juice, only it tasted funny and made his head sweetly numb, thus discovering wine. He spent years perfecting the art and finally introduce it to his father who deemed it almost equal to nectar. Even Hera agreed it was a magnificent invention. Dionysus' natural charm and his newly created wine earned him a place among the gods. And WITH THE CONSENT OF HERA. That's like the highest level of charm and getting smo drunk to like you.

@@WilliamSmith-iz2kl He did. Look up Dionysus with horns. It's an older iteration where his mother was Persephone, and his influence was more focused on madness, death and rebirth, and the darker side of intoxication. There's a neat video about it from Overly Sarcastic Production.
The satyrs and fauns were creatures that followed his cause. Dionysus never had horns of any kind. Kernunus, of the Celtic belief did. They were different parts of the human psyche. That's all gods are. Our trying to explain ourselves. Departmentalize. There really is no "Greater, Ruling being" there are beings that have evolved beyond our limited thought, but they are not gods. Chew, and digest that.
By the way, I am an ordained priest of Dionysus.

My son's name is another version of Dionysus. When I was pregnant I came across a book of names and his name's meaning said form of Dionysus god of wine. It also said handsome, and attractive.

One tiny bit detail: the story about his cousin and the women (& his mother) that killed him is not actually part of the myth around Dionysos!
It is an ancient tragedy played in Athens! Tragedies were inspired by myths, but they altered them!

Dionysus was also the god of theatre, they would put on shows as a tribute too him. I’m not completely knowledgeable but this is what we learned about him in theater class😂😂❤️

In the Roman part of the Percy Jackson series (heroes of Olympus) Bacchus (Dionysus) was a demigod hero who fought alongside Hercules and the gods to kill giants in one of their attacks against the gods, and from that he became a god.

I think my faviorte atteabute of the wine god is his association with rebirth. In an older verstion of his birth he was torn limb from limb leaving only his heart. From which he was reborn. This is why in so many myths those who displease him are torwn appart.

Christianity was in many ways a Dionysian cult with a Jewish foundation. Coincidence or not, Dionysus and Jesus shared too many parallels and symbols to not make the comparison.

One of my classics professors said one way to look at him was the god of fluids. Blood semen and wine. That he is a dark force of change. He was neither man nor woman, straight or gay. He represented the fluidity that humanity can have, how we can be happy one minute and angry the next, and how often society fears the freedom of fluidity.
Its super easy to like Apollo or Athena and set them up as a great role models (even though their myths paint them as terrilbe) but it can be different thing to worship Dionysus, who was the wild card, the God of fluidity, who is neither Aethereal in heaven or Cthonic in hell and darkness but both
The story of Thebes was wild, tbh.
First off, Dionysus wasn't captured: He intentionally let his cousin take him because from there, he induced him with madness to humiliate him before his court. Making utter nonsense or strike at what he believed was Dionysus (or more accurately, Dionysus' disguise as one of his priests), only to be revealed to have been striking empty air.
And the first person to attack him wasn't his mother by coincidence: Dionysus made a point of inducing her specifically among the Maenads with a madness that made her think he was a lion. After he was dismembered, she tore his head off and put it on her Thyrsus staff. That's the moment Dionysus broke her madness, forcing her to confront the atrocity.
And all of this wasn't because his worship was banned; the banning happened because of his maddening of the city's women. This whole setup was for revenge because this version of the story claims his mother's death was because her sisters spread the rumour of her having slept with a common man and attributing the child to Zeus to avoid ruining her reputation. To avoid Hera's wrath, Zeus sided with them and struck Dionysus' mother down with a lightning bolt before rescuing the baby.
This city-wide gruesome tragedy was to avenge his mother, whom he'd afterwards retrieve from Hades so she could have a personal palace on Olympus. The og momma's boy.
