This looks really solid for a hack/bootleg and as you said there is just enough variations added to make it worth trying. Kind of reminds me of how Ms. Pac Man was an improved hack of Pac Man with more balanced difficulty.

I shit you not there was an arcade in Ocean City that had an animated neon sign of a Pac-Man with legs chasing a ghost. I know it was likely a coincidence, but a part of me still wonders if maybe there's some deeper history involving Otto

I am glad you shared this. I am looking for the rom for my retro system to try this. It does look and feel like Galaga with some new challenges. In some ways, it almost reminds me of the Galaga arrangement game on the Namco Classics Vol 2 arcade game. That one added some new features too and still felt like Galaga. The Dig Dug Arrangement stood out too.

Yeah, in addition to what CareyHolzman said, I could also tell that those same patterns from the Challenging Stages are still taken from Galaga, just that the patterns used in the first Challenging Stages of Gatsbee are taken from LATER Challenging Stages in Galaga.

I believe this game was on exhibit in its original cabinet at the 'Video Game Museum' in Frisco, Texas (within the 'Discovery Center.') Another interesting one is Stratovox (aka Speak and Rescue) which isn't really a clone but takes the same concept and tries to innovate it (using cutting edge technology at the time, and it's difficult to get the same effect from an emulator without the original hardware; same for Battle Zone which they also have there.)

The game is surprisingly innovative for a bootleg, even given the obvious oversights (the "space invader" movement looks kind of glitchy; you can see parts of the starfield moving downward along with the aliens). I especially love how they put the fast bullets mod but also made the game harder; that's how you mod a Galaga ROM right there!!

OK. ....I've been searching for ages for a Galaga/phoenix type clone arcade from the 80's.
I've seen plenty of videos with similar games but haven't seen that.
    It was the same concept.
A little spaceship shooting vertically alien ships coming down in a column from various sides of the screen.
Next stage was some bird looking alien ships that were staying up or coming down one at a time to hit your ship.
You could split the birds in half with a well place shot.
The ship was firing a double cannon shot with unlimited ammo but in a slow pace or a middle rapid fire gun with limited ammo that were getting back full with every double cannon successful hit you made.
