    I expect it's running a dump of the original arcade ROM under emulation, and therefore it would include any bugs the arcade had; it would be a difficult task to decompile, change and recompile the ROM, or to patch it to remove an obscure bug like that. Good to see they are using the original arcade ROM though, rather than a console version of the game.

      @Monitor1CC 11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, it has to be the actual arcade rom for the reasons you stated. I’m thinking it’s using a small emulator program + the rom and certain anomalies such as the sound being a bit off at times may just be something such as a combination of the emulation maybe not being 100% along with the tinny speakers rather than being due to a rewrite. Either way, I’ll definitely be buying this unit now. I’m really impressed with this new Pro lineup from My Arcade and I definitely want to support these in the hopes they do even more units with arcade roms such as Dig Dug (and arcade accurate games from other companies like Taito if anybody from My Arcade is reading this 😉).

      That's what you'd THINK but all their other games that SEEM to be running the arcade ROMs are frequently missing bugs and AI behaviors and they also all feature new copyright text on the main screen.
      Like in Ms.Pac-Man the ghosts don't always turn around when you eat the power pellet, and when you chomp multiple stacked ghosts it doesn't pause for each one, it acts like you only ate the one ghost.
      The UFO in Space Invaders also was missing some scoring element.

    I remember being 14 years old and hanging out at the local arcade named Le Mans Family Fun Center. The manager would come check on us while playing Galaga and if they weren't shooting at us, he would hit the power button on the game. We would literally play that thing for hours. Such a good memory!! I will be ordering one of these today! Thanks for the great review.

    I remember back in the 80’s when my friend and I activated this glitch. As I recall, we only left the far bottom left bee 🐝 to accomplish this task. Sometimes it took just a few minutes and other times over a half hour. 😊

    The bug is caused by a bullet having a horizontal position of zero which only happens rarely. On a CRT, this position would be slightly off the left edge of the screen. The game has eight memory slots for bullets, and zero is also a designation for unused, which tells the code not to update the position of the bullet. So if a bullet gets a horizontal position of zero, that memory slot will be used up and not recovered, because it needs the bullet to reach the bottom of the screen to be recycled.

    • @FUGP72
      @FUGP72 11 місяців тому +1

      That's not quite true. You can do it on the right side as well. What prevents the enemy shot from being cleared from memory is if it reaches the bottom of the screen when it is off-screen, either on the left or right. It doesn't have to be a horizontal position of 0...just one of the positions that is not part of the visible play area. You will notice that when a shot or an enemy flies off one side of the screen, it reappearing on the other side is not instantaneous. There is a slight delay. This is because there is a hidden area (however many pixels wide) that is in-between. If it reaches the bottom while still inside that in between area, it is stuck in memory.

    Nine months later and I finally get to see this video. I completely forgot about that bug. There is a "retrocade" just 5 minutes from here that has a Galaga cabinet. I'll have to try it on there. I don't think that is a port of the Galaga game software. As others have mentioned, it is most likely the actual arcade ROM being run in emulation on that little unit. Don't really need much modern hardware to emulate old classic games like Galaga. I was able to play it in emulation on a 486 nearly 25 years ago back in the very early days of emulation (and it was not easy to obtain the actual game ROMs back then). It would be very easy to emulate such a game on a cheap SoC which is most likely what is being run in that "My Arcade" unit. If anything was "ported", it would've been the emulation software, which more than likely could've been taken from one of the "open source" projects such as MAME.

    ....but can you play the demo?
    I believe the shooting bug happens when the bees shoot at you 256 times. Once they do, there's an integer overflow (8 bit hardware has 256 possible counts), and the enemy shots stop.

    It’s running the original rom in emulation (IMHO). That bug, well described by others in the comments, depends on specific display memory and geometry that’d be annoying to accurately recreate from scratch, but trivial provided high fidelity emulation. Given the whole cabinet, including all 3 Z80 CPU’s, ROM’s, etc., is comprised of around 75,000 transistors worth of logic and memory, even a $10 (retail) RaspberryPi zero can accurately emulate the cabinet.

    Nice!On M.A.M.E it works wonders but you can do the cheat easier right away on the Tab key and add "Aliens won't shoot", "Invincible", "Infinite Lives" etc . . Last summer I went to Las Vegas for the first time and saw a Galaga Arcade at Pinball Hall of Fame and the no shoot bug worked, now where I didn't had the luck was on Barcade, unless I had to give more time, the most I've waited for the bug to work always is at 8 or 9 minutes top, but at Barcade I tried 20 minutes and wasn't working and I was rushing because had things to do afterwards! Cheers!

  • @Asterra2

    The "work" they undertook to "include" the bug was they used non-revised ROMs in what is probably MAME. Anyway, it does what it says on the tin. I'd have been happier with an OLED screen so the black space background wouldn't look so washed out. Galaga looks fine on a smartphone, for example.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  11 місяців тому

    This really makes me wonder about the nature of these games technically, I know the original Pac-Man pocket player used a homebrew Genesis-based version, and these Pro versions seem to use FM sound and a 320x240 screen (Galaxian even seemingly switches to 256 mode like Genesis games are able to do), but the game behavior itself seems to exactly mirror the arcade versions, I wonder if they're direct source ports to Genesis clone hardware

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  11 місяців тому

      As we all collectively chip away at all the clues, my current (non-technical) theory is that we're still working with that Genesis-on-a-chip engine, but perhaps using decompiled/recompiled game ROM. I'm pretty confident this isn't 100% accurate, but lots of smarter people than me have led me to this current hypothesis.

I bet that this thing can be hacked to add ROMs or all of the my arcade games are on it and something inside is Bridged like a switch to select the ROM. No changes were made to the games only the Namco/Midway text to say Calaga TM & BNEI. Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. Only code altered. Original Arcade ROM would have said Bally Midway or NAMCO. So ya, it's the real ROM. Also with permission from NAMCO. That better than Nacot version for NES. That's a whole other story that's on going.

    So, the previous MyArcade of the games did not have the bug in it? I'd love to have this version, but the lack of saving your high score is a serious letdown considering that it is a battery powered unit that could have easily incorporated a score memory ability without adding to the cost. Now, if MyArcade actually cared enough to do a three game unit that has both of these, plus "Galaga 88", then I'd be more inclined to buy another system, even if it still didn't have the high score saving option.

You just have to keep the 2 left-most bees alive (you can do it with 1 and it is easier to dodge any rare bullets that might get you, but it takes longer) and wait for a long time. The bug works because the game can only have 8 enemy shots on screen at the same time. When a shot gets to the bottom of the screen, it is cleared from memory. However, as he showed in the video, sometimes enemy fire wraps around from one side of the screen to the other. And it is also not an instantaneous wraparound. There is a slight "in between" area off screen. so when the bullet goes off the left side, it will be a few frames before it appears on the right side.
      That is where the bug comes into play. If the enemy shot makes it to the bottom of the screen when it is in that "no man's land" between the sides of the screen, it doesn't get cleared from memory. So, if it happens once, now there can only be 7 enemy shots at a time. If it happens twice, there can be only 6. If you wait long enough, 8 enemy shots will have made it to the bottom off screen. So the memory will never have any room for an additional enemy shot.

      I had the same question as FUGP. To which function are you referring? If it's invoking the no-shoot bug, I run it down pretty succinctly in that short video I showed part of and linked to in a card. It walks you through just what FUGP describes.

    Great video Jon! My only remaining question is which do you prefer: the Pocket Player Pro, the Micro Player Pro, or the Nano Player Pro? (I know I'll inevitably confuse the latter two if I don't ask now 🤣💀).

      For a display piece, it's the Micro Player Pro all the way, but for playability, the Pocket Pro has it over all the others.

    very nice.
    however, there were several ROM revisions of galaga that fixed the bug.
    also, it still gets hard around wave 30, so its not that much easier.
    anyways namco has patched it out of all the new versions of galaga.
    especially on consoles and compilations.
    im pretty sure player 2 will have the millions digit. when i get i will try it out,
    and let you know.
    the other thing is the killscreen at level 256. depending on the difficulty
    different things have. some just quit, others get stuck, and others just
    keep going.

      Ahhhh..once you get the enemies to stop firing, it is simple enough all the way to 999,990. I don't think I've ever gone past that, since I never had the patience to do this as player 2. But I know every time I have done this, reaching the score turnover was never in doubt. It maybe get a little harder, but nothing that all your built up extra lives can't overcome.

      @@GenXGrownUp We might disagree about how the hardware is emulated, but it’s a dead ringer for the stand-up machine. It’s not all that hard to do it with modern components. Still, great version. It’s exactly what it should be.
