    I just wanna say thank you for making videos! I'm not a potter, but it's so soothing to watch you make things. I love how down to earth you are, how you share your mistakes, and as someone who wants to venture into making a living from my art, it's really encouraging to watch you make a living from your own. Thank you, and I can't wait to see what you make for us this year. 💖

    You are the sweetest!! I got sick this past summer and was watching tv during the day. (something I don't do) I ran across the Great Pottery Throw down and was hooked. My husband came home from work one day and said I think you'd love pottery bc of ur personality. (long story) Well, I couldn't quit thinking about the show and went and took a sip & spin class. Fell in love but didn't know that throwing was the hardest thing to do. I was gifted a private lesson for Christmas and have discovered that I need to practice every single day. LOL! I have a lot of interest such as sketching faces with Charcoal, watercolor etc. but think I will try my hand at a little pottery. :-) That got me to your channel and you have the best personality but I know it's hard to get 'up' when you don't feel like it. Just wanted to give you a little boost today if you felt like you needed it. Thank you for your Q&A since I am a newbie.

    Hi Mia, I am also a crafty and float between mediums. For the past few years pottery has taken precedence and I'm just now happy with the products of my efforts. I have so many skills yet that need developing. I love this journey. This past year I found your channel and have been following along. I just want to say, that as a pottery UA-cam creator myself, it is , like you said, not always easy to get in fron tof the camera to film a a vid. I like to prepare how I look a bit, so that I don't look like I rolled out of bed and started filming! Hahaha! I am always thinking, "how will this video present?'. Sometimes, that takes away from creativity and it DEF takes more time! Nevermind thinking about the right tools, the right lighting, the right camera angle, etc... YES, we make some money from UA-cam but at the heart of it, we are makers and we like to share. Making, whether it be pottery, crocheting, painting or anything of the like, it is in our soul and we like to share our ideas. I thank you Mia for making your videos and sharing your thoughts on making and the business of making and the balance of life. Happy New Year!

    Thanks for sharing! I resonate with everything you said about turning your hobby into a job. I’m an outdoor educator and fiber artist. Both started off as passions and became a lifestyle for me. The gradual transition into turning my passions into my income was very organic. I love teaching and hate production/commissions. Like you, I’m good at keeping those boundaries.
    And thank you for saying that slipcasting is hard! I’m a slipcaster and have almost been embarrassed to say so next to other potters. Even though I love hand building. Last year I did a slipcasting advent calendar with vintage molds. I poured over 50 molds in 25 days and it was extremely hard. Not to mention the time it took to decorate each piece. Or recasting over half of the pieces at least twice.
    I look forward to your UA-cam videos this year!

    Hi Mia,
    Thanks for being so open about your life and your business. One thing I can very much relate to is moving to a small town from a city. I'm Australian and could never afford to buy in Sydney so I purchased a place in outback South Australia with a population of about 1200. Such a huge culture change and being the only potter nit host in this town but also surrounding villages and larger towns, I desperately miss my former studio friends. As I work I'm a larger town about 40mins drive away, I really haven't made any friends except neighbours. However, after being here over a year, I wouldn't change a thing - except get a suitable space to teach pottery 😂
    Best wishes for 2025 and I look forward to seeing your new videos!

    "Don't turn your hobby into your job."
    Absolutely true. I've worked so many different jobs I thought I had "passion" for. They ALL end up becoming slogs and I always end up hating them after a few years.
    I believe once it becomes something you HAVE to do, you'll always end up hating it. Keep your job your job and your hobby your hobby. Don't follow your passion for money.

    • @PotterytothePeople
      @PotterytothePeople  День тому +1

      For sure. I think there's a middle ground which I what I've found with my work. Something you enjoy *enough* even after years, but not expecting it to be a passion after years. Also it needs to bring a certain amount of financial security (hard in the arts!) because otherwise it all just feels pointless.

    Hi Mia! I'm trying to teach myself pottery and watching you has been so helpful! Do you have any good resources for people who don't have access to in-person classes?

    • @PotterytothePeople
      @PotterytothePeople  3 дні тому +1

      it depends what you want to learn! A lot of folks (myself included!) started putting classes online during covid. I have some of my website, but there is also loads of free information on youtube. My best advice is find a potter whose work you admire and try to dissect their work (even if it just creeping on their reels). You’ll learn so much doing that.

      @@PotterytothePeople Looks like I'll be creeping on your reels! I'm also super interested in the very primitive works, like pit firing and Raku.

    Fired pottery that's not worth keeping can be ground up for grog. Just wondering out loud... if you don't need grog, maybe somebody you know does?

    I'm not a potter but I like to watch videoas about it. I wish, you would do Raku. Or what we call in Germany Grubenbrand. I wish you a very interesting and fun 2025.

      I would love to try Raku, but I think I would attempt it at a Volkshochschule or something first. It's very dangerous and I don't have any of the expensive equipment for it.
