Lyrics by Giuseppe Aprile, melody by “M° Costanzo”, from the area
of Salento, Puglia, Southern Italy. A poem about emigration and
homesickness, composed towards the end of the 19th century, in the “Griko”
(or “Grecanico”) language, a Greek-based dialect slowly disappearing, but
still spoken in some areas of Southern Italy, which dates back its origin to
the years of “Magna Grecia” (Great Greece), when this part of Italy was
colonized by Greek people, from as early as the 8th century B.C. The melody
must have been composed a few years after the lyrics, and the song soon
entered the traditional repertoire of the region.

and where you came from
with such nice weather.

your spine has the colour of the sea,
and your tail is cut into two.
Sitting on the shore,
