On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Chicago on 9-14-16.
    We're looking at a 1942 Cadillac Series 62 2 Door Coupe Fastback.
The 1942 Cadillac was manufactured in October 1941 just a few weeks before America’s entry into World War II. The war halted production in February 1942. The division turned out tanks, aircraft engines, and munitions until V-J day in 1945. On December, 31st 1941 Washington DC issued “Black Out” orders to Cadillac and the rest of the industry that no car would be delivered with stainless steel or chrome trim.
Cadillac built 16,511 cars for 1942, however only about 500 Series 62 2 Door Coupes, and this one as you can see has all the chrome.
The Cadillac Series 62, called the “ Sixty Two “ boasted a new “ Fastback “ Coupe, and is easily identified by its longer rear side windows and bullet-shape fenders.
    The engine is a V8 346 CI, 150 HP L-Head motor.
The car's Owners are Art & Marge Swanson. Art & Marge shares their passion for the 1940’s Cadillacs body style and they both enjoy sharing their cars at the many car shows they attend.

I know this video is 4-years old, but need to comment. That side view at the beginning is a perfect example of the peak of Art Deco automobile styling… as is the hood ornament. An era that will never be repeated in this age of CAFE fuel standards.

Any 1942 car is extremely rare because of the War years. More correctly known as a Sedanette body style (Fastback body designation came later) is one of my favorite body styles. The gas filler location under the driver-side tail-light is reminiscent of the 1956-7 Chevy. What a beautiful car!

This Cadillac looks so beautiful. In 41/42 america set the design for all the year to come, horizontal grill, "ponton" line and so on. Being in Europe, I'm more into italian and english cars but the american of that period are fantastic. Love all the fastback of that era (Cad 41 and Packard Clipper especially), design is wonderful, interior is still relatively simple and very elegant, and great restoration job of the gentleman for this rare bird.
Thanks for all your videos, a pleasure for any enthusiasts all around the world.

A very rare automobile. I could understand why Art mentioned that there are only four left in the whole US. While the impressive front end with that famous Cadillac Dollar grin was part of the Cadillac line of those years the fastback styled rear had to have been a fairly recent introduction. That fastback styling also was carried on after the war for a number of years by Cadillac. Windshield washers in 1942! Who knew?

This body style was quite a sensation at the time, and I think it carries the two-toning perfectly. I also like the flying lady hood ornament, and that gas story Art told. Wow, my first car was also a 1952 Plymouth Cranbrook, 4 door sedan. I hated it. It was homely, sluggish, under powered, low oil pressure and not much in the way of style. It was sort of a "Chick repeller" vehicle in high school. Add a flat-head six engine and it was sort of an embarrassment. Otherwise, it's most redeeming trait was a huge back seat which came in handy many times.

The strange looking fuel pump with the glass filter on top is actually a dual pump; top is fuel and bottom is vacuum. The vacuum pump was an "assist" for the vacuum windshield wipers which would stall-out when vacuum was lost which would occur when the engine was under load as in climbing hills. Common to have this pump fail or have vacuum line leaks and we would just put up with the poor wiper operation. Was used on most GM cars into the 1950's.

Love this car ! In my fantasy car collection, this would be one of two caddies in that collection. ( the other a '64 Fleetwood ). I'm not a big fan of two-tone color scheme but this is a killer, although I might change the colors. This video was so good I watched again. Lou, you do a great job. I'm looking though your play list and you have quite a resume'. How long have you been at this Lou ? I can tell you really love what your doing ! Nice old chap but little amazed at the lack of knowledge though? It's a 61 series, not a 62. The 61 series was the cheapest Cadillac, not the top series and would have been the entry-level LaSalle had they not been discontinued. Only the 61 series cars had fastback design. Superior models were the 62,60S,63,67, and 75. The Harrison radiator plate was identified as the Vin? but the Vin plate is actually on the drive side of the cowl near the hood hinge, which would state the series and style.
One of these exsac models was imported to England about 30 years back.

Think this car is one of the best designs from the 1940's. At a time when" Made in the USA" seemed to mean care and pride. As well as quality. I know we probably can't bring chrome back to modern Auto production, but, maybe a change in the way styling could be done, along with safety in mind, also, bring back more color variety, just mostly Black, White and Gray with most vehicles, and the prices on some, Sheesh!
