I am dating a man from Pakistan and he speaks so many languages. I'm on a journey to learn Punjabi, it's such a beautiful language and I love the music.
Great progress. Just a quick note to mention that Punjabi is also spoken in Pakistan where the dialect is just a bit different. In fact Punjab in Pakistan is larger than Punjab in India and there are more Punjabi speakers in Pakistan than in India. India has so many languages and only a small minority speak Punjabi there.
@Taj Sidhu That's not entirely true since Pakistani Punjabi script is actually just modified Persian script and Persian script is used in many languages including Sindhi, Urdu, Dari etc. For example when we write in Punjabi, we just use that script. called Shamukhi / Shahname. That's how we read Baba Farid or Bulleh Shah. It was originally written in this script and Pakistani Punjabi people use it all the time if they are educated. It is some of the uneducated people in Pakistani Punjab who don't know their own history and language or think other languages like English or Hindi / Urdu are somehow better than their own history, culture and language. There are lot of educated Punjabi people in Pakistan who also keep our language alive.
It depends on the area, in the majha area of India Punjab we speak majhi which is Lahori Punjabi, in Amristar the Punjabi is Almsot same as Lahore. Also, those who’s grandparents were raised in Lahore and migrated spoke Lahori Punjabi in the house that spread to the family, so it depends!

All of my family can speak Punjabi whenever they want, I don’t know as much, I only know the basics, I can never speak a sentence in the language, idk why I was never born from it, I just grew up speaking English I feel disappointed that I can’t speak it and now I feel like a disappointment to my family cause eventually I can never carry on the language for generations
I think it would beneficial to talk to your parents or family members about getting lessons. From my own experience, it’s very sad when you can’t speak your parent’s language well and you feel a huge disconnect from your culture. I also don’t do well without any form of reading or writing which makes speaking more difficult than it should be. I feel like that could be the case for you too. I bet they’d be very supportive of you wanting to learn more!
