This isn't a good reason not to use sealant. I don't understand what roof needs to breathe means. How does blocking one shingle with sealant stop "breathing"?
Your roof inhales and exhales much like your dog or your wife. So it's necessary to call a trained roofing contractor to perform CPR then give you a price and a bill. Unless you do CPR, your roof have a heart attack and die before you act.
OMG due cut it out. It is so obvious what you are doing here. You want us to call you, so we spend 8 grand on a new roof lol. Edward what should I do? I have a leak thats coming from my roof right now, in the room Im renovating. To fix it by a contractor is 1500$ my roof is 2006. I filed a claim. Should I have the guy repair it out of pocket or use some sort of temporary sealer?
So, should I use flex seal to seal up some holes in a shingle? I'm removing a mounted satellite dish. Not sure if I want to do a whole contracting job just to seal up a few screw holes in a roof. Thanks in advnance!
makes sense. insert a shingle would be better. Flex seal...layering it...creates a perimeter slighter higher than anything outside that perimeter. so water can get trapped in little notches here and there.
I dunno, if it rains right now and the shingles flew off, I would be pretty happy to walk into walmart grab a can of flexseal at 9pm to save the integrity of my house. Insurance and the roofer can figure it out after
Yes, most insurance companies require you to "minimise further loss", so you can talk to them about including the cost of these temporary repairs (in addition to permanent repairs)
I agree! Those products is like a miracle and it does works great. You would save lots of money. At the same time, I understand why the maker of this video completely disagree with the idea. Because he’s going to lose his job or it’s not going to do any good for his constructing business. Not all people likes to spend lots of money to hire someone who can fix a leaking problem in their homes. As much as possible people love to Save money and just do a DIY themselves.
He’s kinda selling his trade, great video and he’s very thorough. The flex seal is just a great product tho, he can knock it but it’s a quick fix for the people who can’t afford roof repairs right away.
If you have a leak -- screw the roofer who won't be there for 45 days . screw your insurance claim that would pay for damages you could have prevented. Emergency repairs are an EMERGENCY. I say .. keep some on hand because it will happen at night or on a Holiday weekend. If some roofer is to lazy to to scrape off a little goo -- then he shouldn't be on a roof. If you're ambitious enough to make the patch, you're probably going to make later repairs yourself anyway. I don't know which is more irritating , listening to complaints in English or listening to roofers who can't speak English ( usually Spanish ).
My roof damaged by hurricane Ian, I used FlexSeal as a temporary repair. Are you suggesting that I let my roof leak until I can get a roofing contractor for repairs, maybe a month?
I also loss some shingles From Hurricane Ian and wondered About Flex Seal. No leaks thank God, but concerned . Don't need to get a new roof, when only need sheets of shingles for replacement
According to this video, the answer is: "Oh very much so ... because using FlexSeal even as a temporary solution could cause even the morning dew to begin defying gravity and create a small puddle .... It's much better to wait it out and let that leaky roof breathe in all that fresh rain , because your insulation will help soak up the excess moisture seeping into your home. And before you say "isn't that bad?" Rain, is just water, and everything needs water - and it'll actually benefit you having some moisture in your insulation as it'll help purify the air in your home by growing some vegetation in the dark, damp, warm environment in between your walls. But if you notice some black dots appearing on your walls, you should call a painter so they can touch up the paint on your walls while you're waiting on the roofers (who likely have several hurricane related repairs scheduled)" BTW, I think you made a good judgement call on doing a quick diy patch job using flex seal until you could get a more permanent solution done. I would've done the same thing with the flex seal ... you saved tons of money by preventing the need to completely replace the roof, insulation and drywall by using the flex seal as a temporary solution (which is a better alternative to the traditional blue tarp method in my opinion)....👍
I don't know about this product because I don't live in the United States but I can categorically say that the silicone does not work as stated by this guy in the video. Silicone rubber or silicone glue does not adhere to the asphalt shingles
I had a leaking roof, then I had the roof replaced 'correctly' with new wood, new paper, new shingles and it leaked again in the exact same spot. I used flex seal and the leak stopped. Five years now and still holding
I was so impressed with Ames liquid rubber seal and flex I gave them both 5 starts I was going to paint the whole slate roof against the advise of experts I feel they are wrong great project use clear
I used this stuff to sparay a few coates around my skylight in my RV because of leakage. 6 months later back to leaking. Looked on top of roof and the suns UV rays completely demolished the flex seal. Its best to use a weatherproof caulk for this application.
Excellent video. I knew that roofs were not "water tight" but did not think about it causing problems with roof breathing. Back to Home Depot I go for shingles.
Nobody noticed early on that the plywood before...and plywood after the sealing is a completely different piece of plywood???? What happened to that big knot in the first shot???? First shot at 1:30 Second shot at 4:04 Looks like different plywood piece.
I got a "new roof" 2.5 years ago. They were supposed to put all new decking on, then shingle. I got home from work and they had shingled over rotten wood and refused to tear it up and do what i paid for. Now i have a bad leak where my garage meets the house. Im in Wisconsin and we just got 18" of snow, it melted, now its leaking. Due to everything being more expensive now days im left with trying to find something that will stop the leaks. Im thinking of dumping a shit ton of tar on that area just to stop my current headaches. Flexseal didn't work! What's a good product to "fix" this situation? I know i need a real roofer to figure it out, but thats not in the budget right now. Suggestions?
So it works. THe question is, for how long? Does layering 3-5 layers get you maybe an extra year, or does it last longer than the rest of the roof? Somewhere in between maybe? How foolproof is this really? Seems simple to me... but what am I not understanding? You made a good point about back flush. I guess if you can replace the shingle, thats generally better.
Holes through the shingle can be mended with silicone caulk which will last as long as the shingle guarantee is for. I've mended shingle that way and it lasted 25 years. That's longer than the shingles are guaranteed for. I don't believe that many understand how roofing systems work and are appalled by the thought of mending torn shingles or flapping shingles or individual holes that way. But it works. Flex seal is a variation on the theme but is more brittle and will not give as much as silicone caulk. I use GE 100% silicone caulk as it has a 25 year guarantee.
Sorry Dimitry but it's obvious that you are a roofer and wanting to get more clients, but the problem is you charged too damn much... If I need major work, I'll call you, but for minor patches, I'm sticking with Flex seal. Yesterday, I got up on the roof and pull up the tiles and found where the branch had cracked the deck... Anyway, some of that metal wire tape couple with flex seal is doing great (plus I put some of that new synthetic felt on it in that area over the Flex seal)... Well, Dimitri you can keep your overpriced labor.
ive got a leak in my roof into my attic - i paid a roof guy to come find the leak. $400, didnt find it. i might try and flex seal some spots on my own and see if i can pinpoint it
Hello, I have a leak between my kitchen and attached sun room which was built after the house was built. The sunroom is attached to our 2 story home. We replaced the room less than 5 months ago to fix the leak. But it’s leaking again. The contractor is no longer responsive. I was going to try to buy some type of caulk or sealant to apply. But after your video, that sounds like a bad idea. Do you have any advise? Thank you in advance.
Usually mark the hole or holes , pushing in metal wire trough tapping inside the roofoutside, caulk the holes with industrial transparent gel , tarped underneath holding of shingles is correct that's the afforable way ,, or
I say try it first if it does not work then use tear from Home Depot at the roofing supply section that has the shingles to use it and try to do it your self the video says to call a roofer but some people can’t afford to pay that when you can do it yourself and it’s better to do it your self because do you want to spend 20 bucks on a gallon or a small buck of tear or 2000 or roughly that just to fix a leak I’m not sure of the price but people tend to try to save money that the job could be small and quick to do.
Hello, Any, ideas on what I can use, on a metal carport, on a mobile home? Rain, still gets onto, my driveway & around, my front door, area. I am, a 60 yr old lady, on a fixed income. I do, my own, repairs. Thank you, so much!
Flex seal & l have had negative results, about what they claim. I would go with replacing the shingle And then use Geocel bonding cement to put under the broken glue seal of the disturbed shingles.
Lol funny thing is my mother-n-law had a leak and it was a nail running in middle of exposed shingle she legit used that spray over that nail cause she didn't know much and was limited resources and as a temp fix it stopped the leak and actually still up there 🤣
I agree with that statement of any roof repair must be done by a professional roof installer or an experienced contractor... I believe that the main purpose of the product (flex seal) is for a temporary fix in the case of the roof shingle missing nobody can get any contractor to take care of the problem right away so flex seal or any other similar product isn't made for a long term fix probable that piece of information should be expressed on the video.
Of course the contractor's going to bash flex seal. You know these are hard times for everybody. We can't afford contractor. The guy just proved that it works. You're just bashing it because you want more work lol
I just want to temporarily use flex seal to patch 2 holes until I'm done buying all my roofing materials. I cant afford a roofer, and I can't get insurance on my house cause it has 4 layers of shingles. Right now I'm not looking for looks. I just want the leaks to stop.
I think it is interesting that he says that even just simply placing a tarp for the problem later would suffice. I mean if it is for just a SHORT SHORT TIME, like long enough to schedule an appointment for the proper kind of repair job person, to get a consultation scheduled within I would say atleast 3 days of first initial need to repair.
Yea, properly replacing the shingle would be best, however as a bandaid works fine. They also sell clear version now so don’t have as big an issue with color mismatch.
I would also argue that this is an emergency repair using flexseal. Most of the time you don’t want to be on the roof in bad weather, stripping shingles to do a proper underlayment most of the time it’s an emergency repair because everything in your house is getting destroyed
I used flex seal last year to seal a nail hole, and now the roof is leaking again. I would definitely pay a few hundred bucks, if you can, rather than damaging my ceiling and wood truss.
"It looks ugly" ... unless you use the clear liquid. Surely you're joking: if I'm calling the insurance company it's because there's something catastrophic like a tree or airplane landing on the roof, even then I'd call the SES (or police, if airplane) first. And the first thing the insurance company will do is charge a AUD $1000 excess (deductible). With 99% of roof leaks, all tiles are in place and there's no "damage", and it's a joint or flashing that's leaking. So I'll use clear Flex Seal. Oh, I nearly forgot: Aussie contractors are so lazy. The last lot we had, for cleaning out the gutters got up on the roof, waved a blower around for 10 minutes (which blew half the leaves onto the ground) then packed up and left (leaving said leaves on the ground).
I like how this asshole hearts comments but doesn't reply to them to help out the people who asked questions. He's probably worried about legal trouble
Your thoughts on the following? The 3 year video update from “Online Auto Repair Videos” said it held up, but it’s imperative to use mesh in conjunction with the flexseal for it to be effective, long-term. In the comment section, he agreed with a comment that in retrospect he would’ve used steel mesh for the project for maximum durability. He repaired the roof in 2016 did the updated video in 2019 and in the comment section as recently as two months ago replied to a comment making no indication that it has failed yet so that’s a total of seven years. Otherwise, not using mesh, (steel) flex seal alone will be prone to cracking overtime.
Our world of work is very different as I only design and build natural and traditional architecture so...ZERO...concrete, steel, plastics, and modern and industrial polluting materials. I have a steel building that is the HQ for my tree care company. 4 skylights. All leaking. Used 3 cans of white flex seal. It withstood 40 inches of rain last winter and doing good this winter. Cost me like $50 and 1 hr of my time.
Number 1: who cares if it is ugly, Number 2: no warranty, Number 3: there are enough gaps in the roof, Number 4: a few seals won't affect flexing, Number 5: the roof is angled there won't be a dam. Flex Seal with spray followed by flex tape is a great fix. If there are a lot of missing pieces then of course you would need a roofer. But today there are many scam roofers. Fix it yourself, Gorilla also has flex tape for half the price, until the whole roof needs to be replaced may be the best option.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Flex seal for small leaks and repairs. Of course, you're not going to Flex seal your whole dam roof lol. I love his first reason: Its ugly" lol Wow dude that's one of your reasons. Dude 99 percent of people could care less about a small black spot on the top of the roof where nobody is going to see. So yeah let's call in a roofer to patch a small leak for about 1,000 bucks or go by a 18 dollar can of flex seal. Its a no brainer.
Why can't we slap on a new shingle after flex seal it? Would it work better? Hate to call a roofer for a small damage, 1, they probably don't want to come for a small job, 2. Roofer has to charge you a lot for that small patch to worth the trip.
roofs cost about quadruple that.
My words exactly
At 4:50 he explains exactly how to easily , properly repair it yourself for the cost of one shingle and a few nails. At home depot a package of shingles is about $50 , nails $10
Last week I did 3 inspections where the insured had used flex seal.
any push back from insurance companies on those?
@@RoofingInsights3.0 I’m an adjuster and nope I don’t care. They tried to help. That’s all I care about.
Edward what should I do? I have a leak thats coming from my roof right now, in the room Im renovating. To fix it by a contractor is 1500$ my roof is 2006. I filed a claim. Should I have the guy repair it out of pocket or use some sort of temporary sealer?
If you do an inspection on a house that is being sold and there are a few patches with this what would you do for that? Like is it ok?
lol "well first things first you should be calling insurance company"
I bet he was first in line to get four vaccines and he's waiting for the next one eagerly
So, should I use flex seal to seal up some holes in a shingle? I'm removing a mounted satellite dish. Not sure if I want to do a whole contracting job just to seal up a few screw holes in a roof. Thanks in advnance!
Use it. These opinions are obscenely biased
Replace the shingles
makes sense. insert a shingle would be better. Flex seal...layering it...creates a perimeter slighter higher than anything outside that perimeter. so water can get trapped in little notches here and there.
wonder if I could spray flex seal on a worn tarp that has been on a roof for 5 months now. Just to give it a coat, it must help?
Clear biased video honestly makes me not want to call a contractor and Go with Flex Seal.
That’s desperate measure. Your roof will be replaced and you need to win time. I love flex seal but it cannot be used as permanent solution
I also loss some shingles From Hurricane Ian and wondered About Flex Seal. No leaks thank God, but concerned . Don't need to get a new roof, when only need sheets of shingles for replacement
According to this video, the answer is:
"Oh very much so ... because using FlexSeal even as a temporary solution could cause even the morning dew to begin defying gravity and create a small puddle ....
But if you notice some black dots appearing on your walls, you should call a painter so they can touch up the paint on your walls while you're waiting on the roofers (who likely have several hurricane related repairs scheduled)"
BTW, I think you made a good judgement call on doing a quick diy patch job using flex seal until you could get a more permanent solution done. I would've done the same thing with the flex seal ... you saved tons of money by preventing the need to completely replace the roof, insulation and drywall by using the flex seal as a temporary solution (which is a better alternative to the traditional blue tarp method in my opinion)....👍
This actually works and saves money iv used this on my pot holes concrete walkway above my porch basement seal like magic 😊
I don't know about this product because I don't live in the United States but I can categorically say that the silicone does not work as stated by this guy in the video. Silicone rubber or silicone glue does not adhere to the asphalt shingles
Two roofing contractors put what I assume is silicone on my flashing, and both times, it cracked and leaked within months.
Thank you for clarifying
Flex seal works but its' just a temporary fix until the job is done correctly.
😂😂😂
I used this stuff to sparay a few coates around my skylight in my RV because of leakage. 6 months later back to leaking. Looked on top of roof and the suns UV rays completely demolished the flex seal. Its best to use a weatherproof caulk for this application.
Excellent video. I knew that roofs were not "water tight" but did not think about it causing problems with roof breathing. Back to Home Depot I go for shingles.
Fuktape thats alotta damage
Nobody noticed early on that the plywood before...and plywood after the sealing is a completely different piece of plywood???? What happened to that big knot in the first shot????
First shot at 1:30
Second shot at 4:04
Looks like different plywood piece.
The flex seal liquid that come in a paint can is much more durable than the spray can stuff. So if you want a lasting repair I'd use the liquid.
Yeah. Find a roofer contractor that will charge you thousands of dollars for fixing a small leak. Plenty of those
Holes through the shingle can be mended with silicone caulk which will last as long as the shingle guarantee is for.
Would it be good to use as a short term temporary use
Sorry Dimitry but it's obvious that you are a roofer and wanting to get more clients, but the problem is you charged too damn much... If I need major work, I'll call you, but for minor patches, I'm sticking with Flex seal. Yesterday, I got up on the roof and pull up the tiles and found where the branch had cracked the deck... Anyway, some of that metal wire tape couple with flex seal is doing great (plus I put some of that new synthetic felt on it in that area over the Flex seal)... Well, Dimitri you can keep your overpriced labor.
I used flexseal for birth control
ive got a leak in my roof into my attic - i paid a roof guy to come find the leak. $400, didnt find it. i might try and flex seal some spots on my own and see if i can pinpoint it
Hello,
I have a leak between my kitchen and attached sun room which was built after the house was built.
I mean who cares what your roof looks like
It’s a miracle for basement walls too ❤This will save thousands/ Insurance claim rejection ( flex saves the day)
Usually mark the hole or holes , pushing in metal wire trough tapping inside the roofoutside, caulk the holes with industrial transparent gel , tarped underneath holding of shingles is correct that's the afforable way ,, or
I completely disagree this will make the roof bad areas last
Very good point. Call your insurance company first.
Hello,
Any, ideas on what I can use, on a metal carport, on a mobile home? Rain, still gets onto, my driveway & around, my front door, area. I am, a 60 yr old lady, on a fixed income. I do, my own, repairs. Thank you, so much!
Flex seal & l have had negative results, about what they claim. I would go with replacing the shingle And then use Geocel bonding cement to put under the broken glue seal of the disturbed shingles.
Thank you!!! I’m a senior and haven’t a clue about roofing except mine leaks. Very helpful.
Seniors are the number one suckers for roofing contractors. Good luck!
the insurance actually doesn't accept repairs done by h.o they will counted as already fix ..and won't pay damages
There’s temporary repairs meant to prevent further damage and then there’s permanent repair.
@@EdwardRatliff which one is flex seal?
Lol funny thing is my mother-n-law had a leak and it was a nail running in middle of exposed shingle she legit used that spray over that nail cause she didn't know much and was limited resources and as a temp fix it stopped the leak and actually still up there 🤣
@@RoofingInsights3.0 ummm lol neither! I’ve seen so many homeowners recently using it to stop a leak and I’ve never seen it work.
The guy just showed you how to ruin the roof
@@RoofingInsights3.0 the guy showed you how to temporary fix a roof, of course contractors won’t like it because it’s a cheaper *temporary* fix
Just trying to get more business as a roofer
Ok so if you have a flat tar roof it should work just fine.
Flex seal is great for temporary fix. It is just a Band-Aid
Flex seal doesn’t cause any problems for roof repairs
I used flex seal last year to seal a nail hole, and now the roof is leaking again. I would definitely pay a few hundred bucks, if you can, rather than damaging my ceiling and wood truss.
How about use Flex Seal for entire roof?
Good job
A roofer that doesn't want us using sealants...makes sense.
Yea but what if your trying to just get through the winter and then your replacing the whole thing?
Do you recomand to use fleshing cement for mi or damage?
That stated, I loved how you described a roof and explained why this product is complete and utter...CRAP!!!...if anyone is trying to actually do a "real repair" of a roof...Good job!!!
Dmitry...If you ever have a "need or want" from within the area of architecture I work...Please do reach out...My new base of operation is now in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, so not too far away...Blessings, j
Is it flexable?
Would it be a good idea to paint primer on the wood b4 you put the under lament down ?
no you need the wood to dry and breathe or it could rot under the primer
Flex Seal….looks like a good product, I’ll be getting myself some!
Get a replacement and flex seal it back blending for a better look ?? Or lace it back more work more money bottom line ?
This is for a singled pitched roof. What about flat roofs?
This guy is just trying to sell you a new roof.😂
What do you think of using the flawless proof system of granular and us rated silicone adhesive to repair hail damage, as an example
Regardless they are still a very good temporary patch
what about flex seal paste on inside of riveted aluminum boat at the seams if not whats best ?
any advice on how to repair a roof if you can’t get on it?
Don’t use flex seal. Use flex tape or flex paste instead!
Exactly!!! I used the spray and it just peals off. But!!! the paste is real 😊 I
