When it comes to Jinjer, that goes back to my comment about them being like a modern day Queen. To expound upon what you said, you have an amazingly talented lead singer who has this amazing presence and charisma when she performs. However, like you said, the moment where you’re used to her is the moment you realize just how amazing Eugene, Roman, and Vlad are in crafting their sound.
Another comparison had to do with a moment I had years ago. I was out with someone when “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” came on the radio. The person I was with asked,”Who’s this?” With a hint of confusion, I told them,”It’s Queen” as I held back asking them,”What the hell is wrong with you?” As their eyes got big, they looked at me and said,”That doesn’t sound like Queen.” It got me thinking,”What exactly does Queen sound like?” If you listen to Queen, you’ll hear a variety of styles done very well.
As I dove into Jinjer, I get the same feeling. What drew me in was “Pisces” but what turned me into a fan was “Bad Water”, which is an amazing track. Since then, I’ve heard a band that can do anything and make it work.

Actually I had the exact opposite experience. The first time I listened to Jinjer I did so only because Tati looked pretty and I wanted to see if she had a nice ass (I know; I'm a dirty dog). I was of the opinion that women just cannot do metal and I still largely feel this way. My first reaction was how great the band is and what a great composition the song is and yes, secondarily, how the vocalist nailed it.
Now five years later Jinjer is my favorite band and regard Tatiana is the best vocalist in metal. They really are the total package and I think they are just a great album away from becoming one of the greatest bands ever...

Roman is very good at using dissonance to create tension. Eugene does tapping, slapping, plucking and chords on the bass. A real master at it. I was a professional drummer for about 20 years. Vlad has really opened my eyes to what can be done with a smaller kit. I changed my kit a lot when I played. Mostly to adjust for the music I was playing but his kit is very unique. His background is as a classical pianist so he plays split stick and everything is very low and accessible. Piano players rarely play with their hands crossed and so he doesn't do that on the drums.
I think in some cases that all the gear is for show for some drummers. If you have to lug your own gear around and set it up you normally don't do it that way though. In listening to Jinjer you might notice there are no guitar solos. Unlike what metal is known for. Everything Jinjer does they do as a band, integrated which is really impressive to me. I love a good guitar solo to be sure but I can listen to Jeff Healey or Stevie Ray Vaugh for that. Their song On The Top is a good example of Roman's use of dissonance and how tight the band is. The Live version in Kyiv is very good. Tatiana gets in on the dissonant fun sometimes too. She does this variation of a scream that has crazy harmonics in it that she will do every once in a while (Judgement and Punishment One Take Vocal and The Prophesy are good on video examples).

That slow middle section of the song is one of my favorite things they've ever done.

I think the way to describe Vlad’s drum kit is ‘efficient’. He has every drum and cymbal that he needs and likes a low setup. Indeed, his floor toms are so low that they actually lean away from him, so that when he hits them from above, the stick lands flat. Another drummer reactor has said that Vlad, with his classical background, composes drum parts in a more symphonic way that creates a bigger sound with only 3 instruments than is usual for rock and metal drummers.
If you think that Vlad doesn’t do the metal double bass kicks and fast beats then you should listen to “Teacher, Teacher” which is a showcase of the whole band’s abilities.

So many fun things about Jinjer. Of course Tatiana is the Queen, and this performance is fire top to bottom. From the extreme vocal control, rapid fire stylistic changes as she sings right into the camera, to her rising up from the ground like a zombie as she screams like a demon. Total tour de force.
Another thing Vlad loves to do in a lot of songs: when there's a pause, he'll throw in a little ding-ding from his bell cymbals. He uses tiny little cymbals that are all bell, called Zil-bells (cause they're from Zildjian) as well as the bells of larger cymbals. Especially if you watch the drum playthrough videos, sometimes he'll do several dings right in a row, it's totally cool, but it's easy to miss in the overall sound and fury of the whole band. They almost always play all together--there's hardly a moment when any one of them is playing/singing all alone. No guitar solos, no bass or drum solos, very little a cappella singing.
Eugene is an unconventional bassist too. He often plays up and down the neck, rather than across it like most players. When you play across the strings, your left hand can stay more in one position on the neck, and it's generally more efficient. Eugene will slide way up and down rather than play across. And he often does it with just his index finger, or just the index and middle fingers on the fret hand. His right hand reminds my of Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne. Multiple subtechniques, such as tapping, slapping, popping, ghost notes, chord strumming with the tops of the fingers, emulating a pick with the thumb and index finger, two- and three-finger staccato plucking, and striking downward on the string like John Entwistle with the thumb anchored in top of the fretboard. It's a master class in bass techniques--but never just to be flashy or show off. It's always in service to the song. Like all of them.
Roman doesn't get as much love as the rest, but he's the glue that holds it all together. His creative use of dissonance is advanced. He uses it like a classical composer to introduce tension and then release it. He never hogs the spotlight like most guitarists do. But do yourself a huge favor and watch his guitar playthrough videos. He is astounding. His chord choices are like Alex Lifeson on crack. His subtle textural shifts are the core of the emotional coloration behind Tatiana. His right hand picking techniques are crazy syncopated--like James Hetfield hold my beer. He's so fast and precise, like inhuman. And his tones! From the most brutal distortion to the most ethereal chordal arpeggios. Often when I view the playthrough videos, I find it hard to understand how I hadn't noticed that Roman was playing such a crazy chord inversion under a part, mostly because it blends so we'll with the bass and vocals. Like check out the guitar playthrough for I Speak Astronomy (after becoming a bit familiar with the song) and you're like "THAT'S what Roman is playing?? How??"
And somehow Tatiana finds the perfect vocal part over all of that. She's an absolute wizard. Warlock? She's famous for procrastinating in her lyric writing, often writing parts as they're in the studio recording them, after everyone else is long done with their parts. She often talks about panicking because she can't find the right thing to say or to sing. And just imagine being presented with one of those monumental compositions, and having to figure out what to sing over all that! I think I'd freak the fuck out! But somehow, at the last minute, under pressure, she works her magic. Writing the lyrics often initially in Russian, she then translates them to English, somehow finding perfect rhythms and cadences in the alien tongue. Ooh, that's a pretty good description of Tati: Alien Tongue. She weaves some extraterrestrial voodoo rocket surgery with her words and her voice. Somehow she finds the perfect insanity to go with all the orderly chaos. She's doing it right now. By all accounts the instrumental parts are mostly all done for the new album. It's Tati's turn, and she's panicking and procrastinating and doubting herself--and getting ready to drop a masterpiece on us. I think we all need to stand back in hushed awe and appreciation, and let Tati take her time with her otherworldly alchemical creation process. She's a goddess. She works on her own timetable. Or none at all. She is Tatiana Shmayluk, Captain Metal! She will prevail! I saw her up close onstage a couple weeks ago, and she was smiling and looking very comfortable and on point. She hasn't forgotten how to scream (that's a thing btw). We've got the live album coming next week. She's building up to bestow some cosmic gifts upon us mere mortals. Mark my words! She feels the weight of responsibility for brilliance--and she will deliver! As Gandalf said: "A wizard is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."

@NittPicc - I’m right there with you on drum sets. It’s not the number of pieces; it’s the way you play each piece of the kit. I’m not a drummer. The younger me was impressed by large kits and speed, until I heard and watched Bobby Previte play his small set. Snare, one kick, and one mounted tom. One cymbal and no high hat. NO HIGH HAT!! His drums were tuned perfectly. The snare was so crisp and precise. The tones and dynamics he played were incredible. I grew out of my obsession with “size.” It really is how you use what you have.

Don't know if you have seen it yet, but if not watch Danny Carey's drum cam of Pnuema. His kit is huge, but he uses all of it. Not just for show. Each piece of his kit has a tuned sound that is unique to it. Vlad is very unique in his own way. Every part of his kit is very low in contrast to most metal drummers. Most rock drummers that use large kits use the whole kit. It's not just a prop to be empressive. Tommy Lee(Mòtley Crüe),Neal Peart(Rush), Daney Carey(Tool), Joey Jordison(Slipknot) just to name a few all use large kits that every piece is used during a concert.

Vlad would 100% smile at your "it's not the size that matters..." joke about his kit.... & boy, does he do amazing things with that kit. One of the most musical drummers in heavy music imho. I suppose that's to be expected given that he's a classically trained pianist to trade! When you get around to recording a reaction vid for the OMV for "Mediator", treat yourself to watching the drum cam live capture of him at a festival show- the mere thought of trying to get all that right live gives *me* sweats just watching him. LOL ua-cam.com/video/k6Xoipsd22E/v-deo.html
Also nice to see someone showing appreciation for Eugene's bass work. In this song, you're spot-on that it sounds like he's adding an extra instrument, as he's holding down the deep root of the chord with his left hand as normal, & tapping high up the fretboard to create the lead melody of that passage while Roman gives some atmospheric reverby chords on guitar. They do this kind of thing in a few songs, & I love it when they do. One of the best songs for showing Eugene's bass chops is their single "Vortex". When you get around to recording a reaction vid for the OMV, treat yourself to watching the bass playthrough vid he uploaded for it- it's a drop-A 5-string #MasterClass ua-cam.com/video/iBdZI_u3zP0/v-deo.html ;)

The answer to your question about the size of drum sets is, "it depends". For some drummers, the less talented ones, the big sets are indeed for show. But then for the truly talented drummers like Neal Peart (Rush) or Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) the big kit is necessary. Vlad (Jinjer) is very talented, but he also plays like a jazz drummer which is pretty rare in metal. He is a trained pianist who only recently in the last ten years or so picked up the drums. If you look at his kit from the side you will see that it's set almost perpendicular much like a piano. It makes sense for him to play with a set this small just because of how angular he likes everything.

Roman's guitar compositions and technical proficiency need more attention! Roman's main special virtues as a guitarist are his chord choices, the creativity and quantity of his riffs, and the insane rhythms he manages to pull off. These virtues are well displayed in "I Speak Astronomy", "Captain Clock" and "Pit of Consciousness". Since you're a musician, I recommend a double-feature for each of these songs consisting of the official music video for "I Speak Astronomy", live at Ressurrectionfest 2018 for "Captain Clock" (guitar sound is poor in the live recording, but Tati's performance is outstanding), and live in Kiev for "Pit of Consciousness", paired in each case with Roman's guitar playthrough for the song.
    Cheers!

The answer to your question is, most drummers do not add pieces just for show- they use every piece- from the gigantic set of Terry Bozzio to this relatively small one for Vlad Ulashev here. And Vlad's set is unusual in that it is lower to the ground, as are his many cymbals. Vlad is actually trained as a pianist and is self-taught on drums! You should see Vlad when is throwing blast beats, such as on Teacher Teacher especially.

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin 15 днів тому

The drummer's kit is quite a lot bigger these days. If you look at for example Vortex, there's lot's more cymbals etc for him to play with.
Musical drummers like Vlad sometimes like to have toms and cymbals of different sizes because they can kinda play, or at least back, the melody with them, playing the toms or cymbals in order that gives you kind of chord in back of the instrumental chords. Vlad has a lot of cymbal action going on in the newer songs, and especially for a band that has only three players all kinds of tricks can come handy in keeping the sounds "full" when needed.
Kai Hahto of Wintersun and Nightwish uses toms in a similar manner. But his kit is big in general, because Nightwish has so different styles in different songs that after every new album he needs to add something new to his touring kit to play it live.
I can assure you that on the level Vlad and Kai are at none of the instruments are there for show 😀
Bigger kits means you need to reach farther and thus playing gets more physical, being quite damn physical already, so they try to keep it as compact as they can.

I believe, some people from the lovebites universe are involved and their drummer is pounding as hard as haruna. and watch out for the bassplayer.

I'm close to my 30th anniversary of playing bass and have played with a lot of drummers. All of them would tinker with their kits, adding and subtracting and fine tuning, but not a single person I knew or know had a piece that was there just for show. The smallest drum kits are still a pain in the ass to set up and tear down and load into a vehicle. Having pieces just for show would be inefficient. Of course not every piece gets equal use, but each piece is there for a purpose. The *_one_* exception I can think of is Haruna of LOVEBITES. She has had star-shaped cymbals in both bands she's been in, and their only function is to spin.
Regarding the "small kit, big sound" comment about Vlad, you're not wrong. He definitely makes most of what he has and is such an interesting drummer. Another drummer who has a small kit but gets a lot of sound is Yeong Eun from Rolling Quartz. I'm not comparing skill and I know both bands are wildly different, but I notice the same thing about both drummers.
Lastly, I have a suggestion that'll test you musically. The song is "The Day That the World Breaks Down" by Ayreon (pronounced air- yawn). Ayreon is a project of a Dutch musician (wow, is _that_ ever an oversimplification) named Arjen (pronounced are - yen) Anthony Lucassen. The songs clocks in at just over 13 minutes, has a lot of personnel, and is one of those songs that most reactors get around to eventually. Musicians always have fun dissecting this one, and I think you'd love it, especially if you go into it totally blind. Also, there's no danger of it being blocked!

And if he loves your reaction, Arjen has been known to post in the reactor's comments 😊

You actually have a good point. I've been playing for 25 years and usually the bigger the drum set, the more they're just showing off and flipping their sticks around to look impressive. There are artists that can use them, but I think it's impressive yet excessive.

Hey lady have you watched Jinjer video --- JINJER-Who's is Gonna Be The One (Live) Napalm Records. There is tapping on the bass AND Tatiana even dances. Part ogf her dance reminds me of an Irish jig. She and the great Floor Jansen are the queens of the hair flip!! Your hair is long enough for piggy tails. Can you do these hair flips?? I bet you can. And practice your air-kick. That is very important.......

Some nit-picking (I can't hold back 😛): Perennials don't need to be seasonal or die off regularly - all plants which live longer than two years are perennials.

    • @module79l28
      @module79l28 20 днів тому +1

Yeah, I never understood why Tatiana called this song Perennial because perennials are exactly the opposite of what she's singing about. In normal terms, perennial is synonimous with eternal, perpetual and in botanical terms, perennials are the ones that never shed leaves and last a long time.
