    I would still use rubber bands; clamps, like used in woodworking, could damage the molds (plaster is pretty easy to scratch and break). You could go with straps if they're large molds, but rubber bands are more cost effective than straps and come in a lot of sizes. UA-cam won't let me link in the comments but if you go to bigceramicstoredotcom and search for rubber bands, they have a good selection. Good luck, and have fun!

    So that's it, you mearsure, mix and pour it into the molding, no firing it up?!!!
    I 💖 it!!!

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  5 років тому +2

      No, this is just one step - the mixing and pouring of the slip. After it sets in the molds you have to take the piece out, wait for it to dry, clean the mold seams, underglaze (if wanted), bisque fire, glaze, and glaze fire. It's a process, that's for sure!

    This might be a stupid question but can I use concrete to pour into the mold instead of the slip?

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't, no. It's possible that the concrete might bond to the plaster, and in that case you'd wind up with a large solid block. I'd go with plastic or rubber/latex for pouring concrete.

    I absolutely love seeing how other people pour and use their space! I have been doing ceramics for 20 years but on and off. I recently have had a terrible time getting my slip to the right consistency!! I have never had this problem before. Do you have any tips? I, using reclaimed slip from green ware that either broke or I won’t use etc. Thanks in advance!!

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  4 роки тому +1

      I reclaim greenware all the time, for slip. Mostly I'll just add water to rehydrate it, and maybe add a little unused slip as well. Sometimes, if I absolutely can't get it to the right consistency (if it's too thick) I'll add a little Darvan (available at pretty much any ceramic supply shop). If it's too thin, on the other hand, I'll either add more dried greenware, or let the bucket sit open overnight if I don't have anything to add. Good luck, and welcome back to it!

    Hello & thank you for your video. I love your work! Would it be possible to do this with smaller silicone moulds? Thank you!

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  4 роки тому

      Hi, Julie! No, slipcasting would not work with silicone -- the slip needs the plaster of the mold to help dry it and form the piece. With silicone, though, you could probably use any regular solid clay (not liquid). I've done that sometimes for small things like buttons.

    Thank you for this, my school is getting a large number of molds donated to them, I have worked with ceramics but never molds. A few molds I have now are missing a rubber band or two, is there a place online to buy them or would looking into heavy duty clamps be better?

    first I'd like to say I noticed my soup mug that I am drinking my coffee out of right now is on your video lol. What kind of slip are you using? Is it a porcelain slip? Do you make it yourself from the powder slip and is it hard to make it from the powdered slip. Is it cone 6? I haven't done Ceramics sense my early twenties. I am now turning 65 March 3rd and planning on retiring in a couple years and would like to get back in to ceramics. I have acquired about six hundred molds and I'm itching to get at them! Thank you for your help in advance.

      Hi, Christina, I'm sorry I missed this comment earlier! For these, I use an earthenware slip, which I buy in an already liquid form from my local pottery supply shop. I know it can be cost effective to buy it in powder form and mix your own, but I don't have a designated mixing area and as I have pets in the studio I don't want to do anything that I'd have to wear a mask for (I worry that if it's bad enough for my lungs that I have to wear a mask, what about my studio cat...?). Six hundred molds, huh....? That's a lot! Have fun going through them and making things!

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  7 років тому

      Hi, Janice! You can use whatever sort of slip you want, although if the molds are previously used I would make sure to clean them so that any previous clay doesn't contaminate what you use. Just look for a pottery or clay supply shop near you, and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction.
      As far as how to get started pouring them, it's a pretty easy process. Here are a few website tutorials you may want to read:

    Wow this is amazing! How many minutes usually it’ll take for it to dry?

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  4 роки тому +2

      How long I wait can vary by a few minutes depending on how dry the mold is, and how humid it is in the studio. A good rule of thumb is at least 20 minutes, but what you're looking for is really thickness (about a quarter of an inch) rather than time. That's not bone-dry, though; it won't completely dry until you take it out of the mold. Then, depending on humidity levels, it can dry in one to three days.

    I am just learning to do this. I have a cup handle mold that comes out cracked. What am I doing wrong?

    • @LorenaHaldeman
      @LorenaHaldeman  4 роки тому

      It could be that you're letting the mold sit just a little longer than necessary. As clay dries against the plaster of the mold, it also shrinks and pulls away from the plaster. Thin things that curve (cup handles, bird necks, cat tails) can break if they shrink so much that there's not enough room for them to pull in enough.

      I don't have a pouring table. I'd love to have one, mind you, but they're both large and expensive, and I have neither the room nor the money to justify having one. I'd love something to catch and remix the slip for me, though. Right now, I empty the molds into buckets, and reclaim the slip from that.

      @@angelinasaenz5840 I do cover them! I use large buckets (five gallon, I think? you can find them at hardware stores) that have lids that seal. Keeps the air out, and if it does start to dry it's really easy to just add in a little water or deflocculent (which I am almost assuredly spelling wrong).

      Hi, Janice. Depending on humidity and when the last time a mold was poured (so how damp the plaster already was when you started to pour, and how long it took the slip to set), the time of how long it takes before you can open them varies.
