Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 тра 2011
- In this ceramicartsdail... video, Guy Michael Davis gives expert tips on how to slipcast successfully. This video is available in the Ceramic Arts Network Shop: mycan.ceramica...
Vinegar is used to re-hydrate the clay without adding excess water which would cause the rim to expand and crack. It's often used to join handles to mugs and other such appendages in ceramics...We refer to it as Unicorn Pee because of its apparent magical properties! Hope that helps!
thanks for the information. That helps a lot!
Do you know what are the factors that affecting the casting rate/time?
Wow, i did not know this! Thanks.
How to prepare liquid clay?
I have used vinegar on my pottery (in the greenware stage) with great results.
As a beginner I found this extremely helpful. Thanks a lot
I just got left about 7000 molds when a family member past, so I guess I better learn how to do this. Thanks 👍
lucky you!
Excellent instructional demonstration!!!! Especially for beginners like me!!! THANK YOU!!! p.s Your tips helped out a lot!!!!
how long do you have to let the mold dry after you make a slip?
This was so pleasing to watch. I had no idea that's how it worked.
@4jeanmyers If I am not mistaken he makes his molds. I *think* he had a few vids that showed how to make your own. Search using the terms "how to make a slipcasting mold" or "slip casting molds" and I bet you'll find the ones I saw, too. Good luck!
How long did it take for the cup to release from the mold
Thanks for your teaching, but I'm more interested in how to prepare a good slip for my slip casting process. I don´t know why there are not videos to teach that to the artisans. The final product is a result regarding each earlier steps throughout the process. I don't know to learn about WHAT or HOW but WHY.
¡Thanks again!
Straight forward, no BS, excellent video
What a great video! Excellent camera and audio work too.
Could you please give more details for the slip mixture?
For the most common formulation of slip (no idea what that is), what is the density of the finished fired material? I'm asking for the density of a simple formulation without additives to achieve porosity. If there is a reference page of material properties you can suggest, please do.
Best demonstration
Great easy to understand video!
Wonderful video! Does anyone know if it's possible to do this with a cylindrical cup, instead of a cone? I mean, if the walls of the cup are parallel, will it come off the mold easily?
It is unlikely to come cleanly out until it has dried to close to bone dry. This may work for you, but for most potter's would not like it that dry.
I just tried to make my own slip it was too thick.
I should have also let it set in my mold a bit longer it broke coming out
very watchable
Hello Michael, thank you for sharing :) your slip cast look super soft and creamy ..what kind of slip cast did you use ? appreciate your answer xx kind regards
Hi there,
what function does the vinegar in the water play? Thanks for the clear and simple demo.
thank you Could you please give more details for the slip mixture?
Fantastic video, thanks Michael!
if you left this in the mold would it dry completely solid? and how long would that take? thank you
The clay shrinks as it dries. My guess is that if you let it dry until it was solid, then at some point the casting would crack.
The reason for this is the item would dry from the outside to the inside and the drying would thus be uneven. This normally happens when you pour the item, but when the item is thin (because you pour out the excess slip) then the item is able to dry somewhat evenly, reducing the stress on the clay.
hi how long to let the mold to dry before the slip casting thanks.
This is awesome. So excited to try!

How to get rid of bubbles that appear in the cup
Can I just make slip from my clay or do I need to add anything to it?
What type of clay did you use for your slip?
Hi, From where we can buys those kind of moulds and please explain how to make these kind of slip mixture?
If you still.need molds I have thousands. I would happily sell some.
thx i learned suff
Have you ever done an inverted version? I'm trying to make a square cup that has a cylinder in the center. instead of just a square mug. I also am wondering if you used any mold release.
I had the same question, hopefully someone who knows more about ceramics can chime in?
I like to know how to mix and prepare the Sleep casting either way recycle clay or from raw materials can you help me please? ^ ten
I'm really struggling when trying to slip it from the mold 🤦🏻🤦🏻
hi i've been looking for porcelain slip supplier is there anyone here that can suggest a online store that ship international
Any idea if you can do slip casting with resins as well or just ceramics?
also, if I wanted to cast solid pieces, can the mold be made from wood and foam ? thanks
I am fairly certain it mist be a plaster mold
Not with clay. Plaster is used with clay to absorb the water in the clay, drying it. Wood can pull some water out, but not enough and it is slow. Foam would not absorb water, so that is right out.
How to make slip for slipcusting?
would a one piece mold work with a vertical walled cup?
it should, as long as the bottom of the cup isn't fatter than the top, or the cup will be trapped within the mold.
Please can you tell me where I can get a mold like the one you you are using in the video. Have tried to find a cup/mug mold but having no success I am in England but would pay shipping from America. Thank you Jean
They aren't hard to make, there are lots of videos on you tube detailing the process. Find an oversized cup that you like the shape of and use that to make your own molds.
why vinegar ? It's pure vinegar or it's mix with water, how much? Regards
I would also like to know why the vinegar.. first time I've ever heard this.
+andré nogueira de melo Vinegar tends to keep tools from sticking as much.
+Marcus Bellon Vinegar tends to keep tools from sticking as much.
Pure vinegar. It softens the clay. Water would make it crack.
Where is the handmade element to slipcasting pottery?
+stephen ryan Well, often the potter has constructed the original piece from which the mold is made. Many who sell their work, find that they can mark down prices significantly on cast pieces, especially compared with slab built boxes or rectangles, and so they can successfully sell more. Additionally, what if the cup isn't the emphasis? What if the artist includes decoration that takes hours such as piercing, sculpting, or fine glaze techniques? This all adds up in time put into a piece, which means a higher cost in sales...
Thank you for answering my question so well! I now look at slipcasting in a new way although I still prefer throwing!!! You just can't beat throwing!!!
+stephen ryan Agreed! and throwing can be very time efficient. I like slip casting in places of slab building, but prefer all other hand building techniques over it. :)
well, ok for the hobby area !!? :-)
Only 1/8" of an inch? That's going to be a very thin and fragile cup. Most would do a 1/4" to 1/2".
Still too fat...I work with porcelain and we have very specific standards !
Yeah, search for "slush casting"
