    I took my friend snowshoeing for the first time! Oh, and that friend just so happens to be the Instagram hiking sensation Andy Neal of @andyfilmsandhikes! Andy is an outdoor enthusiast, professional hiker, model and influencer who blew up on Instagram after he made a reel about going for a "stupid hike" for his "stupid mental health!" Since then Andy has used his viral platform to be a champion for the benefits of going outside on mental and physical health, as well as an advocate for more inclusion and representation in the outdoors for plus sized people! Most importantly, to me, he is a great friend and a wonderful human. I was so excited to take him on his first ever snowshoeing trip and teach him how to snowshoe like a pro, even though the hike I chose for his first time snowshoeing was, well... watch the video to see 😅.

    When I first started hiking I watched Miranda‘s videos to learn how to do everything, what gear to get, and just for a good laugh. Never in 1 million years did I think that not only would I be friends with Miranda but I never thought we would collaborate together. Thank you so much Miranda and Rainer for having me… and I didn’t die.

      Well, found a new subscription!
      I'm a bigger guy myself, running around 320lb and it's so [gosh darned] RARE to see anyone talking about hiking and struggling with gear for the big set.
      Can't wait to binge your videos, Andy, and good luck in the future.

    Videos like this--showing someone experienced introducing someone inexperienced to the thing--are uncommon, and it is great that you did this. This is great for newbies to feel more at ease with trying new things and joining their more experienced friends, and this is also great for exemplifying that introducing newbies to what we love can be gentle, fun, and enriching.

    When I moved back home to Montana, I was a big gal. I constructed a whole personality around Anne Taintor’s “I love not camping” merch. But an old friend dragged me on what I now know was a super easy backpacking trip, but one I will nevvvver forget (we bushwhacked up to a small peak, very bad idea but the view was incredible). My friend was a masters swimmer & expert hiker, and was 100% encouraging & awesome! Without that trip, i would have avoided outdoorsing, because I thought my weight was too big a barrier. For those who don’t have a Steve (he’s also a PhD literally working on curing cancer, he’s too talented), I’m so glad there’s people like Andy & Miranda spreading the word that outdoorsing really is for everybody! I am working on a wheelchair accessible foraging program for spring, it’s amazing how great outdoor accessibility is growing!

    Accepting that you WILL fall is step one. Learning to get back up (literally and figuratively) is skill number one. I have snowshoed several hundred miles over the past decade and I still sometimes take a spill. Oh well. Get back up. Brush off the snow. Keep moving. Enjoy yourself and the beautiful scenery.

    Always great to see stuff like this. As a bigger guy, figuring out if I can use microspikes, compact snowshoes, or full size snowshoes for fresh snow is always a challenge and something that scared me away from snow hiking and camping for over a decade. Great to see a friendly video introducing some in my weight range to what is often considered the extremes of hiking in a safe and easy to understand manner.

    My favorite part about winter hiking, outside of the generally less sticky sweatiness, is that I can be grateful for what bugs provide, while not existing exclusively in fight-or-flight mode. @@andyfilmsandhikesIn bottomless powder nothing even comes close to a pair of 10x56 Alaskans, but introduce ice, crust, or anything more than a gentle hill and you’re not going anywhere. They’re really specialist equipment, like mountaineering snowshoes (MSR Lightning Ascent, GV Mountain Extreme, etc.) When you need ‘em nothing else will do, but they’re definitely not jacks-of-all-trades.

      Great comment! The snow here in WA is kinda iffy right now. It’s either packed and icy and chunky and you can walk right on top, or soft and you just sink like an anchor. Been thawing and refreezing a lot out here. Warmer than usual too. I went without snowshoes just because it’s easier to film without them. One step I’d feel on solid ground, the next I’d sink to my waste. This happened in both places we hiked. I should’ve just worn snowshoes. 😂 I really want to try classic old school snowshoes on some serious fresh powder someday! And even try our hands at making them!

    • @philsmith2444
      @philsmith2444 4 місяці тому +1

      Yep, as you get more experienced and explore in different snow conditions you’ll find yourself adding snowshoes to your collection. I have 10 pair, everything from 28” Atlas Aspects to 12”x42” GV Wide Trails, with my most used size being 10”x36” (Tubbs Mountaineer, Garneau Blizzard III, and GV Snow Aerolite, along with new this winter Atlas Range MTN 35s.) Probably 98% of my snowshoeing is off-trail in the mountains of NW Maine, and I’m almost always carrying a 35-40lb pack with tent, sleeping bag & pad, stove & food, etc. Add that to my 260lb and there’s quite a bit of weight! The Mountaineers do what I need almost all the time, though, and for when they don’t I have the Wide Trails. They’re less aggressive, though, so hills are more difficult. Good arm workouts, though!

    Holy cow, that was a TOUGH first time trail ... not news to you, I know. I have a pair of the same snowshoes as Miranda and love them. I live in NW Montana on 8 acres with 40 acres of adjacent state land, i.e. I can snowshoe (with my dog on his own feet) from my front door. We have loops of .5 to 2 miles and since we are doing sometimes 3x per day a 'shoe that is easy off and on is a must for me. Those shoes are ratchet bindings and fit the bill ... PLUS the heel lift.
    I did notice and maybe Andy did also if he watched ... his step length got a bit long. I think Miranda's "short step" is right on. However, as I have taken friends who were expert downhill skiers, expert xc skiers, hikers ... on snowshoes and my conversion % = 0. FWIW, I was a downhill skier, not a great xc skier but LOVE snowshoeing ... 24 years snowshoeing. I am 68 as of this writing on 2/21/2024.

    This was such a great collaboration, I loved it! It's so great to see you both just enjoying the hike and joking around! And also knowing when you've reached the extent of your comfort level and being able to change plans on the fly is so essential when hiking. Push your limits, but know when you've reached the line :)

    Andy is my kind of dude, he's so much like me that I feel like I'm looking in a mirror, he's willing, trying and giving his best at all times. He (nor I) may not be in the best shape, but he's giving it everthing he's got and having a laugh while doing it! Keep going for it Andy, keep delivering these great, inspirational videos Miranda, and even though I will never meet either of you, you both have my respect and appreciation.

    ... learned something new here ... didn't know about boot mounted "Heal Bars" ,, Can't find them online ,, any references ?? My snowshoes are much older and heal bars were not offered ,, maybe a model to adapt to older snowshoes ...
    ✅ ... Second look .... heal bar here is part of the binding ,, again ,just not familiar with that brand snowshoe ..... many others have a heal bar on the webbing mat of the snowshoe that lifts up ..... a great feature .........the search is on !! ....

      Ooo that’s so cool! I don’t know anything about boot mounted heel bars, but that’s a neat thing.

      I need to get me that heel bar.

    • @DominiqueB
      @DominiqueB 4 місяці тому

      for MSR snowshoes, they call it the "Televator", so you can search for that, or "heel lift" or "climbing bar". I've seen once a "heel lift" that strapped to the boot and created a higher heel : it was an experiment, first time trying it, and the guy didn't like it, it was not stable, moved around... might have been user error, but the ones mounted on the snowshoes seem much more reliable, and faster to deploy and fold.
      A poor-man's McGyver substitute is to pack very compactly some snow under your heel. ;-)

    As a larger hiker I was worried about sinking too. I bought super long (30") snowshoes. Just so you know, in Washington's generally wet snow that isn't necessary... just led to looooots of falling down. Next time I'd get 25" that have the tail option for if there is fluffy snow.

    • @andyfilmsandhikes
      @andyfilmsandhikes 4 місяці тому +2

      Yeah, PNW snow in general from what I’ve discovered is a little wetter so you don’t sink as much. I’m wondering what it will be like if I get on some fresh powder in Utah or Colorado…

      I’d go big, either Faber Mountain Quest 11x40 or GV Wide Trail 12x42. Traction is less aggressive than Tubbs Mountaineer or MSRs but traction won’t do you much good at the bottom of a 3’ deep hole.

    Andy was a good sport taking on a challenging slope like this for the first time on snowshoes. In the best of conditions without snowshoes that slope would be lactic acid overload. When he was coming back down the thought of Body Surfing hit me as a way to descend holding your shoes up. Anyway, I thought that would be fun. What is with all the dog poop, how irresponsible. Yes, plenty of snow unless they are making picnic tables a lot shorter 10:18. The only thing missing was breaking out the stove and having some hot apple cider and Biscotti.
